A photo that claims to depict the family tree of World Economic Forum (WEF) Founder Klaus Schwab includes multiple inaccuracies. Posts online are taking it as evidence he is related to the Rothschild banking dynasty on his mother’s side. The same image of the family tree appeared online as early as July 2021 in a conspiracy thread on Reddit (here). KLAUS SCHWAB PARENTSThe family tree notes an accurate birth year for Klaus Schwab, but the names of his parents are incorrect. The photo shared on social media includes multiple inaccuracies to falsely link Klaus Schwab to the Rothschild banking dynasty.

CNN —A novel trial that has been described as “the last roll of the dice” for a generation of HIV vaccines has entered its latter stages. Nearly 40 years since HIV was identified as the cause of AIDS, and 36 years since the first HIV vaccine trial, the medical community still does not have a working vaccine. But that is not necessarily why they were chosen to participate, said Eugene Ruzagira, PrEPVacc trial director. Evaluating the combination of a trial HIV vaccine and PrEP is a first, say organizers. “I did my very first HIV vaccine trial in 1991,” recalled Weber.

Mr. Hassan fell from a particularly dangerous stretch of the climbing trail on K2 known as the bottleneck and later died. “There was no rescue mission,” Wilhelm Steindl, an Austrian climber who provided video footage of other climbers stepping over Mr. Hassan on the narrow mountain path, said in an interview with Sky News. “Seventy mountaineers stepped over a living guy who needed big help at this moment, and they decided to keep on going to the summit.”The authorities in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, where a portion of the mountain is located, identified Mr. Hassan as a “high-altitude porter.” They said they were investigating whether “adequate efforts were made to rescue” Mr. Hassan, whom Ms. Harila said was part of another team. The authorities said they would examine the conditions of Mr. Hassan’s climbing gear and “ascertain who authorized him to climb with equipment that might have been insufficient for such high-altitude expeditions and his level of experience.”People frequently die summiting the tallest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest and K2. The treks are so dangerous that the bodies of fallen climbers are sometimes left behind, and some are never recovered.

SILVER NITRATE, by Silvia Moreno-GarciaSilvia Moreno-Garcia’s dexterity with genre — oscillating between horror, thriller, crime and gothic — is well known by now, as is her penchant for mashing them with historical Mexican settings. Her stories have ranged from a quest narrative and romance in an alternate 1920s Mexico to a reimagining of H.G. She has three loves: horror movies, her white Volkswagen and her childhood friend Tristán Abascal, a tall, handsome, washed-up actor. When he reaches out to reconnect, it means he’s between relationships; this time he also needs to borrow her car. The plot is set into motion only after a long conversation between the two friends and Abel Urueta, Tristán’s neighbor and a once-famous Mexican horror film director.

Achieving success at an early age is impressive in any industry, but it's particularly awe-inspiring on Wall Street. Kuenzel, who started as an intern at hedge fund Citadel in 2018 and focused on quantitative research, spoke about his rise within Griffin's financial empire. It's a good lesson for how fixing issues at work is a surefire way to supercharge your career. The Fed and the SEC are investigating the work Goldman did with SVB in the lead-up to its failure, The Wall Street Journal reports. If you're suffering from pre-diabetes or obesity, intermittent fasting could be a good way to control your blood sugar.

The masters used the byproduct of beer brewing to prep their canvases so paint wouldn't seep through, new research found. That suggests painters were turning to byproducts from local breweries to prepare canvases, they reported Wednesday in the journal Science Advances. "Then, by surprise, we found something completely different," said Andersen, a paintings conservator at the Royal Danish Academy. Instead, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, which prepared canvases for its artists, likely bought leftover mash from local breweries. This kind of recycling wasn't uncommon, Andersen added: Artists also used bits of sails for their canvases and boiled leather scraps for their glue.
Mike Wilhelm is a service and parts director at a car dealership in Michigan. He says drivers have some misconceptions about car repair and how EVs differ from gas-powered cars. Here's his advice for car repair and maintenance, as told to the reporter Alexa St. John. I would suggest car owners do a little bit of homework on car maintenance and why it's necessary so they can understand the importance of it. They took their car to an aftermarket mechanic, put four or five different parts on the car, and come to us saying no one's ever touched the car.
Weird and wonderful trains that break the rules

Here’s a selection of unusual railways that break the rules in order to reach the places other trains can’t roll. The single rails carrying the trains are supported by a series of 486 steel portals weighing almost 20,000 tonnes in total. It is the oldest continuously operating pier railway in the world. Six miles of the route are along a rural railway line, with the rest in bus mode. Demand in Europe was still sluggish, but the German automaker expects that to improve too in the coming months as consumer confidence rebuilds. The company warned in February it expected lower earnings this year, even with sales remaining stable, because of high costs and inflationary pressure. The vans division saw an adjusted margin of 15.6%, up from last year's 12.6%, boosted by improved deliveries and pricing. Overall, global growth is likely to remain subdued, but inflation is gradually declining, energy prices are expected to be less volatile, and raw material prices are improving, it said. Bischoff died on Tuesday of natural causes, a close relative, who asked not to be named, told Reuters on Wednesday. A former chairman of Lloyds Banking Group (LLOY.L), Citigroup (C.N) and more recently JP Morgan Securities (JPM.N), Bischoff had also been CEO of Schroders (SDR.L). Robert Swannell, former chairman of Marks & Spencer, who worked with Bischoff for 33 years at Schroders and later Citi, said he would profoundly mourn his friend and colleague. The deal was hailed as a huge success for Bischoff's leadership team, having started with a business worth just a fraction of the 1.3 billion pounds price Citi later paid. He returned to JP Morgan as chairman of JP Morgan Securities the same year.
Vanessa Fraser is a professional runner sponsored by Nike. As a professional runner for Nike, she's stared down American records, competed at national championships, and raced to make Olympic teams. These days, she's bringing that intensity off the track and into the world of venture capital. So when the call came from a recruiter working with Benchmark, Fraser was open to listening. In some ways, stepping back from full-time professional running and adding variety to her days have made Fraser an even better athlete, she said.
The sport’s thrill and glamour draw an audience from across the socioeconomic spectrum, though all would agree: The weekend costs a fortune. Single-day tickets can go for thousands of dollars, on top of travel and hotel prices that reflect the host city’s sudden surge in population.
Many Greens oppose the mine's expansion, but Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the Greens party has fronted the government's decision. Some activists dumped 250 kg (551 lb) worth of coal blocks in front of a local Greens party headquarters, German media reported. Some of the activists have built treehouses in Luetzerath, believing these would make it harder for police to force them to leave. The move echoes a similar protest in 2013 in the Hambach forest, which delayed an RWE coal mining project for years and became a symbol of anti-coal demonstrations. Those include firing up mothballed coal power plants and extending the lifespan of nuclear power stations after Russia cut gas deliveries to Europe in an energy standoff that sent prices soaring.
The news Wednesday that a far-right group had plotted to overthrow the German government in a coup surprised many around the world who thought the country had largely done away with its extremist right wing. The group is closely associated with the extremist Reichsbürger movement — literally meaning “citizens of the Reich,” or kingdom — which rejects the legitimacy of the German state. Miro Dittrich, an expert at CeMAS, a German group that monitors right-wing extremism, said this was not the first far-right group to have plotted a coup d’etat in recent years. One of the group’s main leaders is Heinrich XIII Prince Reusthe, holder of a royal title that lapsed with the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the creation of the modern German state in 1918. What unites them, he added, was a “belief that the Germans are being oppressed by a powerful foreign power,” or that the German state is assisting in this oppression, therefore justifying an armed insurrection.
REICHSBUERGER MOVEMENT NUMBERS AND STRUCTUREGermany's domestic intelligence service Verfassungsschutz put the Reichsbuerger movement under observation in 2016, shortly after one of its members shot dead a policeman during a raid at his home. Today, the Verfassungsschutz attributes some 21,000 people to the Reichsbuerger, with around 5% or 1,150 of them seen as far-right extremists. Some 2,100 Reichsbuerger are prepared to use violence to reach their goals, according to the 2021 annual report of the agency. REICHSBUERGER BELIEFSMembers of the Reichsbuerger (Citizens of the Reich) do not recognise modern-day Germany as a legitimate state. Other members of the Reichsbuerger argue Germany is still occupied and under military occupation.

The company forecast a slight increase in fourth-quarter sales from a year earlier. The cars division earned 4.03 billion euros from 28.2 billion revenue in the third quarter, compared with 1.4 billion euros and 23.5 billion respectively in the same quarter of 2019. The company raised its full-year margin forecast for the cars division to 13-15% from 12-14%. Group earnings reached 5.2 billion euros from July to September, up 83% from last year, with revenue up by a fifth to 37.7 billion euros, adjusted returns of 14.5% for the cars division and 12.7% at Mercedes-Benz Vans. Top-end luxury sales lifted revenues, making up 15% of overall cars sales in the third quarter.
China is the largest market for Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz finance chief on Wednesday told CNBC the automaker's pricing of its cars in China is "well-supported" after U.S. electric vehicle giant Tesla slashed prices. The CFO's comments come after Tesla on Monday slashed the price of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China, one of the company's most critical markets. Tesla's price cut comes as competition ramps up in China from domestic electric car firms such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD as well as upstarts Nio and Xpeng. In the third quarter, Mercedes-Benz sold 84,850 electric vehicles, up 39% year-on-year.
The luxury carmaker now expects 13-15% in adjusted sales returns for the cars division this year, and 9-11% for Mercedes-Benz Vans, from previously 12-14% and 8-10%, respectively. In the third quarter of 2019, the cars division saw 1.4 billion euros in earnings from 23.5 billion in revenue, but in this year's quarter, it reaped 4.03 billion euros from 28.2 billion revenue, Wednesday's statement showed. Group earnings reached 5.2 billion euros from July to September, with revenue up by a fifth to 37.7 billion euros, adjusted returns of 14.5% for the cars division and 12.7% at Mercedes-Benz Vans. Mercedes-Benz Vans saw sales up by just under a fifth to 104,000 vehicles, with electric van sales up by a third this year so far. Top-end luxury sales lifted revenues, making up 15% of overall cars sales in the third quarter.

REUTERS/Tatyana MakeyevaBERLIN/MOSCOW, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) said on Wednesday it would withdraw from the Russian market and sell shares in its industrial and financial services subsidiaries to a local investor, becoming the latest carmaker to exit the country. Mercedes-Benz Russia said shares in the local subsidiaries would be sold to car dealer chain Avtodom. "Final completion of the transaction is subject to the authority's approval and the implementation of contractually agreed conditions," he added. The Association of European Businesses (AEB) said 9,558 Mercedes vehicles were sold in Russia from January to September, down 72.8% from a year earlier.
BERLIN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz expects top end vehicle sales to rise in the single digits and said battery-electric vehicle production was hampered by production bottlenecks this year as it released third quarter results on Wednesday. The carmaker had said in July it expected top end vehicle sales to grow by 10%. It was no longer holding as many unfinished products as it was at the height of the semiconductor shortage, chief financial officer Harald Wilhelm said in an analyst call, but inventories were higher because finished products had not yet been delivered. Pent-up demand in Europe and a high order backlog would carry the carmaker into next year, Wilhelm said, adding it would prioritise bringing down inventory in the fourth quarter.
