REUTERS/Jeenah Moon/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Wells Fargo (WFC.N) on Wednesday said it may commit $60 million to Concordance, a nonprofit organization that helps workers with criminal records re-enter the workforce. "We are generally focused on providing support for housing, financial literacy, sustainability, and this is outside our wheelhouse but it is an important issue and deserves attention," Daley said. JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) runs a similar initiative, Second Chance, to sign up new employees with criminal records. Certain estimates suggest that about a quarter of the U.S. population is left out of the talent pool due to criminal records.

They have started using the spikes in their nests to keep other birds away. For this particular nest, magpies pulled up 150 feet of the spiky metal strip from the rooftop of a nearby hospital, creating "an impregnable fortress," said Hiemsa. Hiemstra told the BBC that more research is needed to confirm the intent of the corvids using the spikes in the nest. Magpies build roofed nests and favor spiky materials. Other spiky materials had previously been spotted in nests in the area, such as barbed wire and knitting needles.

On Friday, the Supreme Court struck down President Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan. Chief Justice John Roberts said in his opinion that the Secretary of Education wasn't the proper person to implement it. The Supreme Court thinks it's a matter suited to the legislative branch, rather than the executive one. "The question here is not whether something should be done; it is who has the authority to do it," Roberts concluded. So he could potentially enact a plan to deliver relief using another law, like the Higher Education Act of 1965, which does not rely on a national emergency.

In the student loan case, the 6-3 conservative majority, including Barrett, concluded that the student loan law in question did not give the secretary of education the power to cancel broad swaths of loans. “Though this grant of apple-purchasing authority sounds unqualified, a reasonable clerk would know that there are limits,” she wrote. “For example, if the grocer usually keeps 200 apples on hand, the clerk does not have actual authority to buy 1,000 – the grocer would have spoken more directly if she meant to authorize such an out-of-the-ordinary purchase,” Barrett wrote. “In my view, the major questions doctrine grows out of these same commonsense principles of communication,” Barrett wrote. ““The broadly worded ‘waive or modify; delegation IS the HEROES Act, not some tucked away ancillary provision,” Kagan wrote, referring to the relevant student loan program statute.

Justice Elena Kagan slammed the Supreme Court for striking down Biden's student loan forgiveness plan. The high court, Kagan argued, is approaching a future that is "a danger to a democratic order." "That is no proper role for a court," Kagan wrote. "Congress knew that national emergencies would continue to arise," Kagan wrote. "From the first page to the last, today's opinion departs from the demands of judicial restraint," Kagan wrote.

A trio of longtime executives have taken charge at CNN following the exit of Chris Licht. There's a moment in Tim Alberta's brutal profile of CNN's now-former CEO Chris Licht where Licht awkwardly takes a jab at his predecessor Jeff Zucker. The following Monday, as Licht attempted to quell growing calls for his ouster, Licht told CNN staff: "As I read that article, I found myself thinking, CNN is not about me. What was it like working with Lin-Manuel Miranda on new songs for “The Little Mermaid”? I gave him a little Caribbean tune thinking he would lyricize that, and in fact, he rapped over it! In 1997, David Horn, now the executive producer of PBS’s “Great Performances” series, told The New York Times, “When there’s a Sondheim musical, everyone refers to it as a Sondheim musical. When it’s something Alan has done, they refer to it as a Disney musical.” Do you still mind your shows being known as Disney musicals? I sometimes would have a little resistance to simply being characterized as “Disney composer Alan Menken” because I already had a huge hit with “Little Shop of Horrors” before I went to Disney.
An inverted yield curve means that short-term bonds offer better returns than long-term bonds, which seems counterintuitive. Well, there is a case to be made for an inverted yield curve not being a sign of an impending recession. Click here for more on why experts are questioning the inverted yield curve's reliability as an economic predictor. I suppose any number of companies going public might seem like a lot amid the current drought, but it still seems like slim pickings. On the one hand, a company going public now must have supreme confidence in its business.

What Your Therapist Doesn’t Tell You A dozen counselors on what it’s really like to sit in the other armchair. “ ‘I need to pee so bad.’ Clients don’t realize that we have five minutes between sessions and sometimes making it to the bathroom is not possible.” — Jessa White, L.M.H.C.A. You can’t do psychotherapy if a person doesn’t feel safe — there’s no way that’s going to happen. For months, Trump has been attacking DeSantis with the expectation that he'll challenge him for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In the latest dig issued Friday morning, Trump reshared a video of DeSantis on Truth Social. In the clips, DeSantis shifts the pronunciation of his last name from "Dee-Santis" to "Deh-Santis." The question of how to pronounce "DeSantis" made headlines in 2018 when Trump endorsed the then-US congressman for the GOP nomination for governor. In 2018, the Tampa Bay Times suggested that Casey DeSantis rebranded DeSantis' name, under a story headlined "Tomato, Tomahto; Dee-Santis, Deh-Santis."
In the early 2030s, Australia would buy three Virginia class submarines and have the option to buy two more. Under the initial AUKUS deal announced in 2021, the United States and Britain agreed to provide Australia with the technology and capability to deploy nuclear-powered submarines. It will be the first time the United States has shared nuclear-propulsion technology since it did so with Britain in the 1950s. Currently no party to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty other than the five countries the NPT recognizes as weapons states - the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - has nuclear submarines. Body doubling provides that motivation, experts said. “But I do know that the idea of externalizing motivation is a long-standing, evidence-based mechanism for managing ADHD,” Roberts said. The other person doesn’t have to be doing the same thing as you, unless the activity you need body doubling for — such as exercising — requires that assistance. How transparent you are about why you need a body double is up to you, as is whether you have more than one body double. There are also body doubling or coworking platforms or apps such as Flown, Focusmate or Flow Club.

Let's break down what to know ahead of the Federal Reserve's widely expected interest rate hike today. Today's rate hike decision probably won't surprise anyone, as markets have long priced in a 25-basis-point move for the February and March meetings. In any case, according to Reinking, unless Powell musters up some serious aggression, any messaging will ultimately fall upon deaf ears. AT&T’s fiber diet should help mitigate M&A bloat

NEW YORK, Jan 25 (Reuters Breakingviews) - AT&T (T.N) boss John Stankey is getting the telecom titan back in its lane. The $145 billion company on Wednesday disclosed a $25 billion non-cash impairment charge partly related to its landline business. AT&T benefited in other ways, adding 656,000 net new mobile subscribers who pay monthly in the fourth quarter, far better than what Verizon Communications (VZ.N) managed. In the fourth quarter, AT&T’s average revenue per user for its fiber product was approaching $65, $10 higher than what its non-fiber service fetches. At least it’s a venture in AT&T’s wheelhouse, and a higher fiber diet should help mitigate the M&A bloat.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden's push to make South Carolina the first major battleground in Democratic presidential primaries has a second big beneficiary: Vice President Kamala Harris. "It's a good demographic mix of having to appeal to Black voters, White working-class voters and Latino and Asian American voters." “How many Black voters are persuaded that the Democratic Party cares about them because South Carolina goes first? South Carolina, one of the most Republican states in the country, isn't competitive at the presidential level in general elections. “South Carolina is also known to be kind to those who’ve been kind to her,” he said.

French bought a small plot of land and built a "tiny hotel" made up of seven cabins. In March 2021, he bought a 5-acre plot that would become Live Oak Lake.
