Vivek Ramaswamy Photo: cheney orr/ReutersWEST DES MOINES, Iowa—For those who speculate about what Vivek Ramaswamy really wants out of his long-shot Republican presidential bid—perhaps a podcast or a television contract—the wealthy biotech entrepreneur has one answer. “I expect to be the president,” he said in an interview as he crisscrossed this state ahead of the presidential caucuses Monday that will start the 2024 nomination balloting. But that expectation rests on hopes for a dramatic change in the race: Donald Trump’s departure.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Political operatives have long said having a robust organizational effort that can turn out supporters on a cold winter night is critical for success in Iowa’s presidential caucuses. This year’s weather is taking the cold part to the extreme: Forecasts call for the lowest temperatures ever for an event that dates back to the 1970s. That could put a dent in turnout, especially among older voters, for the first 2024 Republican nomination balloting.

Ames, Iowa CNN —Teresa Garman has attended decades worth of Iowa caucuses, but views Monday’s meeting as the most consequential. In interviews, Iowans expressed an array of opinions on Trump’s legal problems, from anger over what they say they believe is a “witch hunt,” echoing the former president’s criticism, to a desire to move on and focus on issues plaguing the country. Among those who were not considering the former president, 57% said Trump was controversial and 48% said they were concerned about his legal issues. “If Trump is the nominee, it’s going to be about January 6, legal issues, criminal trials,” DeSantis said during a CNN debate Wednesday. “I think that Vivek is, in a roundabout way, even better for Trump than Trump being in there,” Sherman said.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The NFL was concerned that nobody could make it Sunday in Buffalo, where up to a couple of feet of snow was expected overnight. So, the league and New York officials decided to postpone the Bills' wild-card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers until Monday. They practiced all week in warm Miami, and it was 86 degrees on Friday, when they stepped on the plane to Kansas City. For you, me — it's cold,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

Afterward his visit, Trump Jr. told reporters that the list of legal cases facing the former president will ultimately boosts his political cause. Trump has said he expects to win Iowa big as he defies the typical strategy of lowering expectations. Ron DeSantis, who is campaigning aggressively in Iowa, has criticized Trump for skipping the series of Republican presidential debates and campaigning only before large audiences. “In a time of war, and great heartache and trial, criticizing the leadership of our strongest Middle Eastern ally?” Brown said. “This guy was in the middle of watching moms and dads weeping over their little babies who had just been killed.”

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The cost of building an artificial intelligence product like ChatGPT can be hard to measure. To keep it cool on hot days, data centers need to pump in water — often to a cooling tower outside its warehouse-sized buildings. The estimate includes indirect water usage that the companies don’t measure — such as to cool power plants that supply the data centers with electricity. It was also thirsty in Iowa, drawing more potable water to its Council Bluffs data centers than anywhere else. Its fourth and fifth data centers are due to open there later this year.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Iowa Democrats find themselves at a crossroads. Iowa Democrats have watched Republicans dominate in a slate of competitive contests in recent years. Former Iowa state Sen. Rita Hart, who lost a close congressional race in 2020, now leads the state's Democratic Party. Celsi pointed to the Democratic minority's inability to curtail the conservative agenda of the GOP legislature and the diminished importance of Iowa in the Democratic presidential nominating process. Hart is now the chair of the Iowa Democratic Party.

Not long ago, Iowa was the center of the Democratic political universe. In 2019, two dozen presidential candidates roamed the Iowa State Fair to grill pork chops and admire the famed butter cow as they vied for the state’s caucusgoers. Now, as Republican presidential candidates flock to the fair, Iowa Democrats are at their lowest point in decades. “It is so bad,” said Claire Celsi, a Democratic state senator from West Des Moines. Deep in the minority, Democrats in the State Legislature have squabbled among themselves, ousting their party’s State Senate leader in June after a dispute over personnel.

Fight or Flight: Transgender Care Bans Leave Families and Doctors ScramblingLaws in 20 states have left the fate of clinics in doubt and families with transgender children searching for medical care across state lines. But two new laws have left them debating whether to leave Iowa. A ban on a medication that pauses puberty taken by their transgender son, Brecker, was signed into law by the state’s governor in March. “It’s like trying to cross a bridge but the boards just fall out,” said Brecker, who recently finished seventh grade and began receiving puberty blockers in December, a year after coming out as transgender. “So you’re hanging on those two ropes, inching yourself across, not knowing whether the ropes are going to snap or break.”In 20 states, bans or restrictions on transition-related medical care for transgender youths are upending the lives of families and medical providers.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File PhotoWASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) - Former U.S. Representative Will Hurd, a moderate who was once the sole Black Republican in Congress, on Thursday joined the crowded race to beat Donald Trump for the party's 2024 presidential nomination. Painting a stark contrast to Trump, Hurd said his vision of America would acknowledge science, address mental health, and be inclusive and understanding. A former undercover CIA officer in the Middle East and South Asia, Hurd served on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee. In 2019, he strongly criticized tweets by then-President Trump saying four progressive Democratic minority congresswomen, including one born in Somalia, should "go back" to where they came from. Since leaving Congress, Hurd has worked as a managing director at Allen & Company, a board member for OpenAI, and trustee of the German Marshall Fund, according to his website.

Ron DeSantis is coming to New York for a private presidential campaign fundraiser that's set to be hosted by at least four Wall Street executives, including one with past ties to a firm backed by liberal billionaire George Soros, a frequent target of DeSantis and other Republicans. The event is scheduled to take place June 29 at the swanky Yale Club, according to a copy of an invitation seen by CNBC. It will be one of DeSantis' first fundraisers in the Big Apple since he officially launched his campaign for president last month. Shortly after publication of this story, Ardire called CNBC to say that he was added to the gathering's host list by "mistake." DeSantis is still governor of Florida and GoldenTree has an office in West Palm Beach, Fla.

[1/4] Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis listens while his wife Casey speaks at a campaign event in Manchester, New Hampshire, U.S., June 1, 2023. Casey DeSantis is emerging as a pivotal figure in her husband's nascent campaign, and her prominence on the trail could mark a sharp contrast with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Reuters/Ipsos polling conducted on May 9-15 showed Trump is backed by 49% of Republicans, with Ron DeSantis in a distant second place at 19%. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey applaud as U.S. President Donald Trump holds a campaign rally, at Orlando Sanford International Airport in Sanford, Florida, October 12, 2020. Afterward, Casey DeSantis stayed in the main hall longer than her husband, greeting voters and posing for pictures.

Trump, the front-runner in the Republican race, recently assailed DeSantis' handling of the COVID pandemic, when DeSantis resisted federal mask and vaccine mandates. "Ron DeSantis is not a serious person who can take on Joe Biden and bring about the Great American Comeback," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in response to DeSantis' remarks. It was little surprise, then, that DeSantis held his initial Iowa event in the auditorium of an evangelical church. DeSantis was introduced by Iowa's Republican governor, Kim Reynolds, and was joined by his wife, Casey DeSantis. The nascent DeSantis campaign has been buttressed by a well-funded Super PAC, Never Back Down, which has taken on many of the day-to-day responsibilities of a presidential effort.

I served on a committee in 1973 to help the new Black students there adjust to an institution that was clearly not welcoming. If racism is not systemic, how could there have been so little progress for so long? This is a sad story and a tragic denouement for all the efforts of good people at U.Va. I deplore Mr. Ellis’s attempts to further entrench a history of obliviousness to racism at U.Va. Both of us serve today as trustees of Virginia’s best universities, appointed by Virginia governors, though at different schools.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—National polls on the 2024 Republican presidential primary race can imply it is a two-person contest between an announced candidate, former President Donald Trump, and someone expected to jump in later this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. But the reality on the ground is more complex in the state that starts the GOP-nomination balloting in less than a year. Interviews with roughly a dozen Iowa Republicans suggest most are far from decided, with months of campaign visits and millions of dollars in advertising ahead.
