During a special election in Wisconsin over the summer, a group of partisan poll watchers showed up at a handful of precincts in Glendale, a suburb of Milwaukee, and created chaos by contesting every absentee ballot that was cast. After they were reminded repeatedly about the rules against making meritless ballot challenges, the groups of poll watchers “turned disruptive,” according to Glendale Mayor Bryan Kennedy. They didn’t, and the police were called,” Kennedy told CNN, adding that once police arrived, the observers left peacefully. Some context: Poll watchers are a key component of election transparency, and both Democrats and Republicans have built out their ranks of volunteers and lawyers to observe polling places and vote counting centers. As the biggest exporter of steel, China accounts for about 55% of the world's steel production. Strategists at Macquarie Capital predicted that China's steel exports will reach 109 million tons this year, before declining to 96 million tons in 2025. Trade tariffs could further curb China's steel exports, "albeit this may require a while to play out," analysts from the the investment bank told CNBC. Philadelphia CNN —Dozens of Black motorcyclists drove through north and west Philadelphia over the weekend with a simple message for Black men: Go vote. Younger Black men have received increased attention from the Harris campaign in recent days. Since January, Black Men Vote has been reaching out to its target audience in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where the group says it has registered more than 100,000 Black men to vote. Black Men Vote has also partnered with barbers, who they’ve trained as voting ambassadors to talk to clients about civic engagement. Ninety-two percent of Black voters in the state backed the president, including 89% of Black men and 94% of Black women, according to CNN exit polls.

CNN —A Philadelphia man is facing federal charges for allegedly threatening to skin alive a state party representative who was recruiting poll watchers, according to an indictment unsealed Monday. Prosecutors say that 62-year-old John Pollard sent several text messages to the representative, who isn’t named in court documents. The charges, which come just over two weeks before the 2024 presidential election, are part of an effort by the Justice Department to combat threats and violence against election workers. When the representative did not immediately respond, Pollard allegedly wrote again, saying: “I will KILL YOU IF YOU DON’T ANSWER ME!”“Your days are numbered, B**ch,” he wrote in a second. Pollard does not yet have an attorney listed in the court docket.
