Turning Point Action is one of several outside groups that have taken over the work of canvassing on behalf of Republicans. Some churches and pastors promoted Turning Point events during worship services and in social media posts, NBC News found. Training churches to serve as unofficial Trump campaign surrogates fits into a broader campaign by Turning Point to mobilize evangelicals. Screenshots of Turning Point Action's smartphone app, which encourages canvassers to avoid voters from the "wrong party." When a person attending a June Turning Point conference asked whether it was a good idea to run get-out-the-vote programs through churches, Brett Galaszewski, a Turning Point field director, said that’s exactly what pastors should be doing.

With Republicans favored to win the Senate, Harris may have few opportunities to pursue an ambitious legislative agenda, shifting the Democratic ideological fight to key personnel decisions. “It’d be a strategic blunder for Harris to pick an ugly fight over Lina Khan’s future when there’s already strong consensus among Democrats. Moderate senators like Bob Casey and Jackie Rosen are actively campaigning on the FTC’s work to lower prices,” said a Senate Democratic aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive subject. Removing her would not only infuriate the left but it could provoke a confirmation fight with Senate Republicans over her replacement. Some in the progressive movement believe Harris should simply leave her there without going through confirmation again in the Senate if need be.

“I have a plan and strategy,” Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret and political operative who has close ties to associates of Trump, told a group of Pennsylvania activists earlier this month. Four years ago, Trump’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden didn’t truly materialize until after the election. Brian Snyder/ReutersBut this time around, MAGA activists have been planning to undermine a potential Harris victory well in advance of the election, with some even arguing that state legislators should simply ignore the election results and award electoral votes to Trump by default. “Those looking to overturn the election are way ahead of where they were in 2020,” said Harris. Trump himself has echoed some of the conspiracy theories pushed by his supporters, suggesting that election fraud is rampant in 2024.

CNN —A military law enforcement investigation is still ongoing into the incident at Arlington National Cemetery when an employee was reportedly pushed by a member of former President Donald Trump’s campaign. An Army spokesperson previously said in August that the service “considers this matter closed.”The Army on Friday released a highly redacted police report filed in August by the employee. “The law enforcement investigation into the incident remains open and we are therefore unable to provide further information at this time,” an Army release including the report said on Friday. In one photo that was shared online the grave of Army Master Sgt. Marckesano’s sister, Michele, said in a statement that while they supported the families of the 13 fallen “in their quest for answers” regarding the Afghanistan withdrawal, the Trump campaign “did not adhere to the rules” of Section 60.

New York CNN —The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Goldman Sachs and Apple to pay $89 million, and Goldman was temporarily banned from issuing new credit cards, because of the companies’ mishandling of their Apple Card partnership. Apple neglected to send tens of thousands of Apple Card disputes to Goldman Sachs, the CFPB said. The Apple Card issued by Goldman Sachs and running on the Mastercard network rolled out in August 2019. In April 2023, Apple announced it would be offering its Apple Card holders a 4.15% high-yield savings account with Goldman Sachs. CNN —The US Army has been ordered by a federal judge to release records related to former President Donald Trump’s controversial August visit to Arlington National Cemetery by Friday at the latest. The expedited release is a result of a lawsuit by American Oversight, a non-partisan watchdog nonprofit advocating for the release of government records. The group submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for any records relating to interactions between Trump campaign staff and the employee. CNN has asked the Army and the Trump campaign for comment. The incident also prompted the Army to issue the unusually sharp rebuke of the Trump campaign.

The Supreme Court is visible on July 29, 2024 in Washington, DC. In an op-ed in The Washington Post, U.S. President Joe Biden laid out his proposed reforms to the Supreme Court including 18 year term limits for Supreme Court Justices and a new code of ethics for the court ahead of a speech tonight at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. Lawyers for Democratic President Joe Biden's administration had urged the Supreme Court to turn away the appeal, arguing that the plaintiffs lacked the required legal standing to sue the agency and that their claims are foreclosed by Supreme Court precedent. The current Supreme Court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, has taken an expansive view of presidential powers in recent years and has shown skepticism toward broad authority for federal agencies. This case gives the conservative justices a chance to rein in or depart from Humphrey's Executor.

“Army officials stated that these low mission capable rates, along with the smaller size of the watercraft fleet after divestment, hinder operational readiness and the ability to meet mission requirement,” the report said. After the temporary pier mission ended — the pier was only operational for roughly 20 days in total with a cost of $230 million — the military requested civilian contractor support in bringing the Army’s vessels back to the US. The US military said four of its vessels, supporting a temporary pier built to deliver aid to Gaza by sea, had run aground in heavy seas. The GAO report also said the Army is considering leasing civilian watercraft to bolster its existing fleet and moving all of its watercraft to the Pacific. Ultimately, the Army watercraft is “how the ground force, the Army, gets to war,” Butler said.

New York CNN —The economic successes of Asheville, North Carolina and Tampa, Florida, have been the envy of many cities across the United States. Will the economies in hard-hit areas like Asheville and Tampa ever fully recover from the hurricanes? Economic activity plunged in the immediate months following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Hurricane Harvey in Houston and Hurricane Irma in Columbia, South Carolina. But within one year after those hurricanes, among the costliest in the US in the last 20 years, economic activity rebounded to levels similar to or greater than before the hurricanes. CNN —For the past decade, China has consistently ranked last in the world for internet freedom due to its all-pervading online surveillance and content control system dubbed the “Great Firewall.”But a new report out Wednesday shows that internet freedoms in China’s neighbor Myanmar are now just as lacking. The report from Freedom House, a US government-funded NGO, found that global internet freedom has declined for the 14th consecutive year. In a record 43 countries, people were physically attacked or killed in retaliation for their online activities, the report found. The Central Asian nation Kyrgyzstan showed the biggest drop in internet freedoms, according to the report, as President Sadyr Japarov ramped up efforts to silence digital media and suppress online organizing. The report also covers online disinformation campaigns and political interference in the run-up to elections, including harassment of independent researchers and fact checkers.

The Online Safety Act includes sweeping new rules that will force large tech firms to do more to combat illegal content online. Over the past six months, Ofcom has consulted on its codes and guidance for illegal harms, pornography age verification and children's safety. The regulator added that, while these are positive steps, more changes will be needed wen the Online Safety Act comes into force. From December this year, Ofcom will publish first edition illegal harms codes and guidance. Tech platforms will then have three months to complete an illegal harms risk assessment.

The questionnaires, known as client intake forms, give rare insight into the practices of Sage and other crisis pregnancy centers and how they use ambiguous language to describe their services. These practices are typical for crisis pregnancy centers across the country, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The tactics used at crisis pregnancy centers often create delays that leave women unable to access abortions, forcing them to continue their pregnancies. Most crisis pregnancy centers in the United States are affiliated with either Heartbeat International or Care Net, another anti-abortion network. Like Idaho, North Carolina provides state funding to crisis pregnancy centers.

NBC News reported last week that FEMA put out a call for volunteers for a “surge force” in mid-September, citing a “severe shortfall” in some of its disaster response teams. Ola electric scooters are on display ahead of the Initial Public Offer press conference. India's consumer rights agency received unusually high 10,000 complaints against Ola Electric, over a year and has sent a notice seeking explanation from the SoftBank-backed e-scooter maker, a top official at the watchdog said on Tuesday. Ola, which has a 27% market share in India's e-scooter market, did not respond to a request for comment. HSBC analysts said in a September note they visited multiple Ola service hubs and most "appeared overwhelmed by the service requests". Reuters last year visited 35 Ola centers in 10 Indian states and found many faced significant backlogs, with demand outstripping their workforce.
