People along the coast now have 10 to 30 minutes to reach high ground before a giant wave engulfs the Pacific Northwest. The scene above is a worst-case scenario of a megaquake striking the Pacific Northwest. The bird flu virus hasn’t yet spread from person to person, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday, releasing findings from a monthslong probe into a patient in Missouri who was hospitalized with H5N1. The patient, who tested positive for bird flu in August, had no known contact with dairy cows or poultry. One blood test on a household member of the patient who became ill suggested the person did have H5 antibodies. The bird flu outbreak in dairy cows has infected 333 herds across 14 states so far. “This is a fast-moving situation.”California, which has reported the largest number of bird flu cases, 15, has also asked for federal help, the CDC said.

The Summary Four new presumed cases of bird flu in farmworkers in Washington state bring the U.S. total to 31. Washington is the sixth state to report human cases of bird flu, which has spread rampantly in wild birds, poultry and cattle. Six health workers exposed to the patient reported respiratory symptoms. Webby said the virus’ spread in cows for the past 10 months has raised experts’ level of concern because cows are mammals and interact with humans frequently. Itle said cases in poultry were not unexpected in Washington state, because migrating birds passed through during summer and early fall.

CHICAGO — The CDC is deploying a team to Washington state to assess the health of farm workers who culled poultry suffering from bird flu after four workers are presumed to have been infected by the virus, U.S. and state health officials said on Monday. The cases fuel growing concern among public health experts, as infections of U.S. dairy cattle and more than two dozen farm workers have worried scientists and federal officials about the risks to humans. California and Washington have said they are seeking to administer seasonal flu vaccines to farm workers to reduce their risk of being infected with both bird flu and seasonal influenza. “We don’t have evidence yet of transmission between people,” said Roberto Bonaccorso, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is awaiting specimens for testing from Washington and sending a team to support the state’s assessment of farm workers, an agency spokesperson said.

First openly transgender lawyer to argue at Supreme Court

An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, opposing Tennessee’s Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban’s challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Several plaintiffs — including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents — sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Supreme Court has confronted several cases in the past decade implicating LGBTQ rights. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.

Lyndsay P. Evans, 31, and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, 31, were killed after their EA-18G Growler fighter jet crashed on Tuesday. She was also awarded three Strike Flight Air Medals for contributing to missions flown between last December and March. Because of poor weather conditions and difficult terrain, the search for their downed fighter jet took three days. Search and rescue teams ultimately found the remains of the aircraft in a “remote, steep, and heavily-wooded area” at about 6,000 feet east of Rainier, the Navy said. The two often flew together on an EA-18G, according to the Navy, a modified version of an F/A-18 fighter jet.
