Washington CNN —Republicans are fighting a war against misinformation to keep their constituents safe as they brace for Hurricane Milton to make landfall in Florida, including being willing to point the finger at members of their own party — and their presidential nominee. Greene has stood by her comments, posting a meme and link to a Gateway Pundit article she says backs up her claims. “Former President Trump told us that the people in Springfield are eating dogs and cats, alright? He likewise said that FEMA money, our emergency money, instead of helping the people that are being hit by the hurricane is being used to help illegals,” he said at an event in Utah earlier this week. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who challenged Trump in this cycle’s Republican presidential primary, also warned residents in the path of a hurricane to ignore online misinformation.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden will no longer travel abroad this week as a major hurricane speeds toward Florida. The statement comes ahead of Biden’s expected remarks this morning on Hurricane Milton’s anticipated impact and ongoing recovery efforts for Helene. There have not yet been any discussions in earnest about when the postponed trip would be rescheduled, another White House official said. The White House had appeared aware of the optics of the president potentially being abroad after a catastrophic storm. “He’s gotten updates about the hurricane and (is) obviously continuing to get updates on what is happening on the ground as after the horrible hurricane, Hurricane Helene, and so that will continue.”There is little time remaining in his presidency to reschedule.

Smith sought Trump’s communications on Twitter, now known as X, as part of the investigation into the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Twitter, which argued Trump should be allowed to claim executive privilege over the records, initially declined to comply and was fined $350,000. The company didn’t challenge the search warrant itself but rather the gag order. The government dismissed those concerns, arguing that Twitter itself couldn’t assert any kind of privilege over the records. That investigation ultimately obtained a few dozen direct messages Trump sent and other data connected to the @realDonaldTrump account.

A billionaire minimum tax is one of several proposals pushed by Democrats in recent years to tax the rich. Harris has specifically called for raising the top tax rate on millionaires with long-term realized capital gains from 20% to 28%. Harris’ proposal to increase the tax rate on realized capital gains to 28% would apply to taxpayers with income over $1 million. How a tax on unrealized capital gains would workLet’s discuss how a billionaire minimum tax – which is, on a basic level, a tax on unrealized capital gains – would impact a homeowner. If passed, a billionaire minimum tax – an unprecedented tax on income not yet received – would likely face many legal challenges.

“Did the Fed even need to cut rates in September, let alone cut by 50bps (basis points)?” Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, wrote in a note on Friday. Second-guessing the Fed isn’t new, of course. Central bank officials themselves note the uncertainty inherent in their work, especially when the economy reaches inflection points. Even Fed officials don’t always agree with the central bank’s actions, such as Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, the lone dissenter to the Fed’s decision to cut rates by half a point in September. ‘This isn’t exact science’Fed officials aren’t shy about admitting that they don’t always have confidence in how the US economy will evolve.

The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. Even four years later, candidates’ views on the 2020 election are relevant in important practical ways. Lake also baselessly advocated the imprisonment of Katie Hobbs, who was Arizona’s election chief during the 2020 election and went on to defeat Lake in the 2022 race for governor. Washington CNN —Israel has not given assurances to the Biden administration that targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities is off the table in retaliation for the Iranian ballistic missile strikes earlier this week, a top US State Department official told CNN on Friday. The official added that it is “really hard to tell” if Israel will use the anniversary of Hamas’ October 7 attacks to retaliate. “We hope and expect to see some wisdom as well as strength, but as you guys know, no guarantees,” the official said when asked by CNN if Israel has assured the US that Iran’s nuclear sites are off the table. US officials have voiced support for Israel responding to Iran’s missile attack earlier this week, with multiple officials publicly saying there must be consequences. President Joe Biden said earlier this week the US would not support Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear program.

Twice this year, US forces in the region have assisted Israel in intercepting an attack by Iran. Austin announced in early August that he was sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region; it arrived later that month. The strike group consists of thousands of sailors and Marines, spanning across three destroyers and a carrier air wing. The USS Spruance and USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., also both guided-missile destroyers that are part of the strike group, were operating in the Red Sea. In addition to the firepower brought by the Lincoln strike group, the Navy has a number of other destroyers and capabilities in the region.

The Biden administration’s response to the hurricane has received bipartisan praise from political leaders in affected states. But Trump’s assertion that reviews for the Biden administration’s handling of the crisis have been entirely negative is not true. And this is just the latest Trump false claim on the subject of the administration’s hurricane response. Brian Kemp hadn’t been able to get Biden on the phone, though Kemp had said the same day that he had already spoken to Biden. Washington CNN —The Justice Department and Microsoft on Thursday announced the seizure of more than 100 web domains that a Russian intelligence agency allegedly used to try to hack current and former US officials, civil-society groups and Russians living in the US. It’s the latest in a series of moves from the Justice Department to expose alleged covert Russian operations targeting US democracy in the runup to the 2024 presidential election. The UK government last year accused the same Russian hacking group of conducting a “sustained unsuccessful attempts to interfere in UK political processes” over several years that hacked politicians, civil servants and journalists. The hackers operate on behalf of Russia’s FSB intelligence agency, the prime successor to the Soviet-era KGB, according to US officials. Another FSB-linked hacking group has posed a direct threat to US critical infrastructure by targeting energy facilities, according to US officials.

Washington CNN —The threat environment in the United States “remains high” ahead of the November presidential election and conflict in the Middle East, according to a new assessment by the Department of Homeland Security. The annual assessment released Wednesday warns of possible threats from violent extremists driven by the heated political environment in the US as well as foreign and domestic threats from terrorist groups and others inspired by conflicts abroad. Some of those intentions of Iran and other countries, according to officials and the report itself, are to sow confusion and chaos in the US 2024 presidential election. “We have seen threats against election workers, we’ve seen white powder letters sent to election workers to scare them,” the official said. “We have also recently observed a rise in disruptive tactics targeting election officials and offices—like those observed in past election cycles—including hoax bomb threats, swatting, doxxing, and mailing white powder letters, intended to instill fear and disrupt campaign and election operations,” the report says.

For more on the Senate Republican leadership race, watch “Inside Politics with Manu Raju,” this Sunday at 8 a.m. EDT. If Republicans regain control of the Senate, a President Harris would have to rely on the next GOP leader to schedule a vote on a Supreme Court nominee. “It depends,” Texas Sen. Washington CNN —Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in a closely watched defamation trial pitting voting technology company Smartmatic against the right-wing cable network Newsmax, in a high-stakes case over the airing of false 2020 election claims. The Newsmax case revolves around the same false claims, championed by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, that the 2020 election was rigged by Smartmatic software and others. The Florida-based company sued Newsmax and other right-wing outlets and figures in 2021, alleging that its reputation was destroyed by the lies. The Newsmax case will test the legal limits of publishing lies about the 2020 election, and the trial will play out during the final stretch of the 2024 campaign. ‘Dozens’ of defamatory reportsAfter mainstream news outlets – and even Fox News – projected that Democratic nominee Joe Biden would win the 2020 election, Trump and his surrogates falsely claimed that he won.

Washington CNN —Boeing factory workers felt pressured to prioritize production speed over quality and said they did not receive enough training to properly perform their jobs, according to the results of a special investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published Wednesday. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines shortly after takeoff. One of the more egregious examples, according to the audit, was a Boeing mechanic who used an improvised measuring device to check gaps between components. But there is still much work to be done on fixing Boeing’s safety culture, he said. “I think the safety culture change is going to be a long-term project,” Whitaker said.
