Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi was released from prison Sunday after completing a one-year sentence for speaking out against the Iranian regime, the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan news agency reported early on Monday. Salehi had been sentenced to death in April by a revolutionary court on charges linked to unrest in the country from 2022 to 2023, although Iran’s Supreme Court overturned that sentence in June. His songs eulogized months-long protests sparked by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman arrested for allegedly wearing an “improper” hijab that flouted Iran’s Islamic dress code. Salehi was arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in support of the nationwide protests. Amini’s death in September 2022 unleashed protests that posed the biggest challenge to the Islamic Republic’s clerical leaders in decades.

BUSAN, South Korea — Countries negotiating a global treaty to curb plastic pollution failed to reach agreement on Monday, with more than 100 nations wanting to cap production while a handful of oil producers were prepared only to target plastic waste. The fifth U.N. Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) meeting intended to yield a legally binding global treaty in Busan, South Korea, was meant to be the final one. The most divisive issues included capping plastic production, managing plastic products and chemicals of concern, and financing to help developing countries implement the treaty. An option proposed by Panama, backed by more than 100 countries, would have created a path for a global plastic production reduction target, while another proposal did not include production caps. Plastic production is on track to triple by 2050, and microplastics have been found in the air, fresh produce and even human breast milk.

It also alleges that he sexually pursued female staffers, and that the organization ignored another staffer’s alleged sexual misconduct. It claims that his management team “sexually pursued” employees and divided the organization’s female staffers into two groups — “party girls” and “not party girls,” The New Yorker reported. The accuser told police that Hegseth physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room, took her phone and then sexually assaulted her. Years later, Hegseth paid the accuser in a settlement agreement that included a confidentiality clause, his attorney Timothy Parlatore told CNN in a statement last month.

CNN —The Israeli military said Monday that Omer Maxim Neutra, an American-Israeli citizen who was previously believed to be alive and held hostage in Gaza, was killed during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. Neutra, 21, served as a tank platoon commander in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the time of the attack, the IDF said, adding that Neutra’s body is still being held hostage in Gaza. In previous cases when a hostage was declared dead, the finding was based on new intelligence and evidence. We consider it a missed opportunity.”Neutra was one of seven American citizens held in Gaza. According to Israeli authorities, Hamas is holding 101 hostages in Gaza – 97 taken on October 7, 2023 and four others who were kidnapped before that.

He tried to understand what these men believed about sexual violence and use it in his arguments against it. The conversation was part of a pilot program the International Committee of the Red Cross has been conducting to try to better address sexual violence in armed conflict. Last year, the United Nations recorded a 50 percent increase in verified cases of conflict-related sexual violence. And when new wars erupt, gruesome allegations of sexual violence almost always follow images of death and destruction.

This gathering of the school’s Healthy Masculinity Club meets weekly in a third-floor classroom on campus. Hamza Akalin, left, and Ephraim Goodness have participated in a healthy masculinity club at their high school. A Call To MenCleveland High School’s Healthy Masculinity Club is based on a curriculum from a national organization named A Call to Men. At Montpelier High School in Vermont, Latin teacher Joe Carroll incorporates the MCSR curriculum into an elective class titled Healthy Masculinity. Carroll teaches both Latin and an elective class on healthy masculinity at Montpelier High School in Vermont.
