Glenn Youngkin isn’t on the ballot, but Virginia’s elections for 140 seats in the state legislature are very much about his future. If Republicans can wrest the 40-seat Senate from Democratic hands — giving the G.O.P. control of the state government for the first time since 2013 — it will burnish Mr. Youngkin’s image as a presidential contender in 2028, or even 2024. He has that said he will decide whether to make a bid later this month.

Abortion rights supporters won an Ohio ballot measure and the Democratic governor of beet-red Kentucky held onto his office by campaigning on reproductive rights and painting his opponent as extremist on abortion. In both states, abortion was the main issue. In Ohio, a ballot measure preserving abortion rights passed in a state that Trump won by eight percentage points in 2020. Abortion rights measures have passed in a plethora of states as some other Republican-run states have instituted new bans on the procedure. Abortion rights may not be a potent enough issue to swing an election on its own.

Takeaways from Election Day 2023 in America

Here are the key election night takeaways on a strong night for Democrats:As Ohio goes, so goes the nation? Tuesday night’s election results probably won’t change the equation for Biden in 2024, given Ohio’s recent presidential electoral history. Other state Republican parties might not be so lucky. Andy Beshear won a second term on Tuesday in a state that Trump carried by more than 25 points in 2020. Endorsed by Trump but often described as McConnell’s protégé, Daniel Cameron’s defeat will stir a lot of finger-pointing within the Republican Party.

Democrats argue even a 15-week limit is unacceptable and warn that Republicans might seek to restrict abortion further in the future. Every seat in the state Senate and House is on the ballot in November, and control in each chamber is likely to come down to a handful of competitive districts. The governor has the sole discretion to restore those civil rights, apart from firearm rights, which can be restored by a court. It called on DOJ to look into the matter as a possible violation of the Voting Rights Act or other federal laws. The Virginia Department of Elections said in a statement Tuesday that impacted voters will receive written notification that their registrations have been reinstated. It also offered some pushback against the letter, saying it incorrectly claimed that voters were purged “without notice.”“This is false. Macaulay Porter, a spokeswoman for Youngkin, said in a statement that the effort to determine which voters may have been improperly removed was ongoing.

Glenn Youngkin's administration acknowledged this week, with early voting underway, that it is working to fix an error that caused an unknown number of eligible Virginians to be removed from the voter rolls. The Richmond news outlet reported the problem appears to stem from recent changes the agency has made in an attempt to remove people from the rolls who had their voting rights restored by a governor but went on to be convicted of a new felony. The governor has the sole discretion to restore those civil rights, apart from firearm rights, which must be restored by a court. “It is unacceptable that we are two weeks into early voting and the Youngkin administration does not even know how many Virginians they wrongfully purged from the voter rolls. Corinne Geller, a spokesperson for the Virginia State Police, told VPM the agency was making changes to the data it provided the Department of Elections to prevent further problems.

The issue that comes up the most — particularly among women and even from some Republicans and independents, she says — is protecting abortion rights. For those on either side of the debate, Virginia — where all state House and Senate seats are up for election and early voting begins Friday — is among the biggest fights this year over abortion rights. The other is the resounding defeat of incumbent Sen. Joe Morrissey, a scandal-plagued, self-described “pro-life” Democrat, by his June primary challenger, Lashrecse Aird, who centered her campaign around abortion rights. In August, Ohio voters rejected a measure pushed by Republicans that was seen as a proxy for an abortion rights question on the ballot this fall. Perry defended her record and said she believes Virginia — and her Senate matchup against Segura — will be bellwethers for 2024.

A Democratic candidate in a key swing district is in the midst of a scandal over previous work in pornography. At least one prominent Virginia politician, Senate President Pro Tem L. Louise Lucas, immediately came to Gibson's defense, blaming operatives working for Virginia's Republican Gov. As it stands, Youngkin has said that it's his mission to implement a 15-week abortion ban in the commonwealth. So far, the only thing standing in his way has been the Virginia State Senate, where Democrats hold a slim 22-18 majority. So it falls to the voters of Short Pump, Virginia, to decide whether performing on Chaturbate is disqualifying for them, even if that means giving the go-ahead to a statewide abortion ban.

Maj. Joshua Mast, after a raid on an Afghan village, tried for years to adopt a baby he found in the rubble. The high-profile legal battle pits an Afghan family against an American one, and has drawn responses from the White House and the Taliban. The AP has located no records of the birth of the farmer's baby or photographs of her with the family before the raid. Four of the farmer's children had survived, so covered with dust and dirt they were almost unrecognizable, said neighbor Rahim. Less than two years after the raid, Mast helped the Afghan couple and the toddler flee as the country collapsed and the Taliban took over.

Because Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that saluting the flag or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance amounts to worshiping secular authority, they prohibit their school-aged children from engaging in the practice. The decision upheld a Pennsylvania school district’s expulsion of a Jehovah’s Witness brother and sister. A mere three years later, even though the United States itself was now at war, the court reversed itself. “Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard,” he wrote in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette. The consequences of the decision were alarming, and the country paid close attention as the court took up the issue for reconsideration.

Attempts to improve the quality of Twitter, like Twitter Blue, have fallen flat. A search of ChatGPT on Twitter presents tweets from bots in the top results section. On Monday, she said Twitter was "on a mission to become the world's most accurate real-time information source and a global town square for communication" as it evolved into Twitter 2.0. This all gets in the way of Yaccarino's ambition of making Twitter a real-time information source. If Twitter's future is to be a global town square that trades in accurate, real-time information between real-world people, the bots need to go for good — and fast.

Democrat Aaron Rouse has won a special election for a state Senate seat in Virginia after his Republican opponent conceded in a race that was widely viewed as a proxy fight over abortion. Democrats will have a 22-18 majority in the state Senate, and Rouse is expected to provide a crucial vote against efforts by Gov. “Reproductive rights and freedom in Virginia have been hanging by a tenuous thread, especially in the wake of Roe being overturned, and the only thing standing in the way is a one-vote margin in the Virginia state Senate," Tarina Keene, the executive director of REPRO Rising Virginia, said Wednesday. During the campaign, Rouse said protecting access to abortion was a priority, vowing on his website that he would “not compromise” on abortion rights. In his State of the Commonwealth address Wednesday, Youngkin called on the General Assembly to pass a 15-week ban.

American commentators and journalists often appear on Ukrainian television expressing solidarity and offering analysis. Russia’s airwaves have largely been free of U.S. voices, save for occasional clips from American airwaves by Ukraine critics such as Tulsi Gabbard , Tucker Carlson and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene . Most U.S. guests on Russian media come from the fringe, including former Virginia State Sen. Richard Black , who associates with the Lyndon LaRouche movement’s Schiller Institute, and Scott Ritter , an embittered and disgraced former American intelligence officer turned critic of the war in Iraq. More surprising are the appearances of several establishment figures: Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs ; the National Interest’s former national security correspondent, Mark Episkopos ; and Dimitri Simes , until recently president of the Center for the National Interest. They willingly appear on the programs of Russia’s most odious state propagandist, Vladimir Solovyov .
