I got my first smartphone at 30. It ruined my life.
  + stars: | 2024-10-27 | by ( ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +5 min
At 30, I reluctantly bought a smartphone once life with my flip phone became too difficult. Despite the benefits of having a smartphone, I feel more isolated and like I rely on it too much. Having grown up in the age of cellphones, my flip phone felt more than good enough since I could call and text anytime, anywhere. I miss my flip phone, but there's no going backI now view my life in two distinct eras: before and after the iPhone. Life was simpler with my flip phone, but having a smartphone isn't all bad.

A broad Chinese hacking campaign against U.S. telecommunication networks targeted the phones of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, two sources familiar with the matter say. Another source told NBC News that people affiliated with the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris were also targeted. None of the three sources clarified whether campaign devices were successfully compromised or whether China stole their communications. It is unclear who in the Harris campaign was targeted or if others in the Trump campaign were targeted in addition to Trump and Vance. It's not clear that the hack was an attempt to influence the presidential election.

The Chinese hackers also targeted people affiliated with the Harris-Walz campaign, another source familiar with the matter told CNN. US officials informed the Trump campaign this week that Trump and Vance were among a group of people whose phones were targeted by the Chinese hackers, one of the sources said. In a statement, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung attacked the Harris campaign for allegedly emboldening China. The activity is part of a much broader Chinese hacking campaign that has infiltrated multiple US telecommunications firms in the last several months. US officials have briefed members of the House and Senate intelligence committees on the Chinese hacking campaign.

Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. Marissa Mayer recently reflected on Yahoo's struggles and eventual sale to Verizon. Mayer said Yahoo was simply too late to embrace the move toward mobile phones. She still remembers the compliment Yahoo cofounder Jerry Yang gave her as she left the company. AdvertisementWhen Marissa Mayer was brought on with high hopes to captain an already struggling Yahoo in 2012, it took five years of trying to revive the internet giant before she ultimately resigned. Mayer came to Yahoo from Google in 2012 and had big ideas to change the company, as Business Insider's Nicholas Carlson detailed in his 2015 book, "Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo."

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — The director of the National Security Agency said Sunday that a Chinese hack of three major telecommunications firms is under investigation but that it remains “premature” to discuss the case. The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday night. The FBI and the White House National Security Council declined to comment. Haugh said the NSA and other federal agencies issued an advisory in 2022 warning that cyber operators sponsored by the Chinese government were trying to hack major telecommunications companies and network service providers. “I think what we see broadly from a PRC [People’s Republic of China] threat perspective is they’re going to be very aggressive at critical infrastructure collection operations and targeting our critical infrastructure,” Haugh said.

US officials are concerned about the potential national security damage done by the hacking, which they only recently discovered. US law enforcement agencies request access, through a warrant, to specific portions of that data as part of criminal and national security investigations. US officials have briefed the House and Senate intelligence committees on the Chinese hacking campaign, two sources said. The Chinese hacking team in question is known in the cybersecurity industry as Salt Typhoon. FBI Director Christopher Wray has said that Chinese government-backed hackers outnumber FBI cyber personnel 50 to 1.

Verizon acknowledged its network was experiencing a technical issue amid hundreds of thousands of reports indicating users were unable to access their mobile phone services Monday. The telecom giant said in a statement that it was "aware of an issue impacting service for some customers." "Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue," it said. DownDetector, a website that monitors connectivity issues for various web and digital services, indicated there were more than 100,000 reports of outages earlier Monday, though by 11:30 a.m. that figure had begun to decline. This is a developing story and will be updated.

“We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers,” a Verizon spokesperson told CNN Monday. Complaints to Verizon’s verified account on X show that customers have been frustrated by a lack of cell service and an inability to connect to the network. Many Verizon iPhone customers complained that their phones had been stuck in “SOS” mode Monday morning, allowing only emergency calls via satellite. Although relatively infrequent, cell service disruptions have caused some widespread headaches this year. The network went down again for a few hours in June and August.
