Oil prices regain ground as investors eye U.S. election fallout
  + stars: | 2024-11-07 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices edged up on Thursday following a sell-off triggered by the U.S. presidential election, as risks to oil supply from a Trump presidency and a hurricane building in the Gulf Coast outweighed a stronger U.S. dollar and higher inventories. Brent crude oil futures rose 26 cents, or 0.35%, to $75.18 per barrel by 0125 GMT. Trump's election had initially triggered a sell-off that pushed oil prices down by more than $2 as the U.S. dollar rose to its highest level since September 2022. Donald Trump is expected to reimpose his "maximum pressure policy" of sanctions on Iranian oil. U.S. crude inventories rose by 2.1 million barrels to 427.7 million barrels in the week ending on Nov. 1, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday, compared with expectations for a 1.1 million-barrel rise.

He also believes Russia is also betting on “US turmoil” under Trump, hoping internal divisions will “distract” Trump from foreign policy. Zelensky, like the others playing to Trump’s vanity through praise, said: “I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs. Those are the central questions now facing Seoul, as Trump has openly considered downsizing the approximately 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea. Seoul currently pays $1.13 billion annually for American military forces within its territory, a figure which under an agreement signed Monday is expected to rise to $1.26 billion annually in 2026. Buenos Aires Reuters —Argentina’s President Javier Milei on Wednesday replaced Foreign Affairs Minister Diana Mondino after she voted in favor of lifting the US embargo against Cuba at the United Nations. Earlier on Wednesday, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly called on the US to end its decades-long sanctions regime on Cuba, in a non-binding resolution opposed only by the US and Israel. Milei was having lunch when he received a call from Werthein inquiring about Argentina’s vote in favor of lifting the embargo on Communist-ruled Cuba, angering the right-wing leader, local news outlet TN reported. Earlier this year, Argentina’s state energy company YPF said it would not provide fuel to Cuban airline Cubana, prompting the state-run carrier to shut down a route run between Havana and Buenos Aires. Cuba’s foreign ministry at the time said Argentine officials cited the US embargo in defending the move.

HAVANA — Millions remain without power in Cuba for a third consecutive day as slow progress is made in restoring electricity following multiple major grid failures. Hurricane Oscar, a Category 1 storm, made landfall on eastern Cuba's northern coast Sunday evening with sustained winds of 80 mph. CNN —Millions of Cubans remained without power for a third day in a row Sunday after fresh attempts to restore electricity failed overnightThe Cuban Electrical Union said about 16% of the country had had power restored when the aging energy grid again overloaded late Saturday. Cuba’s first island-wide blackout happened on Friday, when one of the country’s major power plants failed, according to the energy ministry. Hours after officials said power was being slowly restored, the country suffered a second nationwide blackout on Saturday morning. The country’s health minister, José Angel Portal Miranda, said Friday on X that the country’s health facilities were running on generators and that health workers continued to provide vital services. Reuters reporters witnessed two small protests overnight into Sunday, while videos of protests elsewhere in the capital have also surfaced.

Cuba restored a trickle of power to its grid by mid-evening on Friday, officials said, hours after the island plunged into a countrywide blackout following the collapse of one of its major power plants. The Communist-run government closed schools and non-essential industry early on Friday and sent most state workers home in a last-ditch effort to keep the lights on after weeks of severe power shortages. But shortly before midday, the Antonio Guiteras power plant, the country’s largest and most efficient, went offline, prompting a total grid failure and suddenly leaving the entire island without power. For many Cubans, far removed from politics and accustomed to regular power outages, the nationwide blackout was nothing more than a normal Friday night. Russia and Mexico, which in the past have sent fuel to Cuba, have also greatly reduced shipments.

CARACAS, Venezuela Associated Press —Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Friday appointed to his Cabinet a close ally who was pardoned by US President Joe Biden last year as part of a prisoner swap and following assurances that Venezuela would hold a fair presidential election in 2024. In exchange for Saab, Maduro released 10 Americans and a fugitive defense contractor known as “Fat Leonard” who was wanted for his alleged role at the center of a massive Pentagon bribery scandal. Last month, it responded to Venezuela’s highly disputed July presidential election by sanctioning 16 of Maduro’s allies, accusing them of obstructing the vote and carrying out human rights abuses. Saab was arrested in 2020 during a fuel stop en route to Iran to negotiate oil deals on behalf of Maduro’s government. After his arrest, Maduro’s government said Saab was a special envoy on a humanitarian mission and was entitled to diplomatic immunity from criminal prosecution under international law.

The organization also argues that mass deportation would make more jobs available for Americans.
