Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, speaks to the media as he arrives at the Sun Valley Lodge for the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference on July 11, 2023 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Some, like ex-OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, believe in taking it to an extreme — and that's when they turn from inspiring to frightening, says a leadership expert. "The most successful people I know believe in themselves almost to the point of delusion." Altman is "far from the first entrepreneur to have endorsed the idea that you have to believe in yourself, above all else" to succeed, says Moore. In his blog post, titled "How To Be Successful," Altman cited billionaire Elon Musk's "absolute certainty" that SpaceX could soon send a rocket to Mars as the "benchmark for what conviction looks like."

The world's richest 1% of people are responsible for around the same percentage of global carbon emissions as the 5 billion people who represent the 66% poorest, according to a report published Monday by Oxfam. The charity's analysis, conducted with the Stockholm Environment Institute, found both groups contributed to 16% of emissions in 2019. The wealthiest 10% were responsible for 50% of global emissions, it found, while the bottom 50% were responsible for just 8%. Within the top 1%, the report links one-third of the carbon emissions to personal consumption in the U.S., followed by China and the Gulf countries.

Insider Today: Automating away CEOs

Today is always a difficult day, particularly here in New York, as we remember the innocent lives lost 22 years ago. But the group that seems immune to those concerns — CEOs — is primed for being usurped by robots, writes Ed Zitron. Ed's argument is straightforward: CEOs get paid a lot despite not providing much value for their companies. For all the talk of CEOs being transformational leaders full of business ingenuity, many are nothing more than figureheads. Missouri and Texas A&M were the first teams to join the SEC in 20 years. Financial benefits and concerns about conference stability lured Boston College to become the A.C.C.’s 12th member in 2005. Penn State, one of the last major programs to remain independent, became the Big Ten’s 11th member in 1993, setting off a wave of realignment across college football. The Missouri Valley Conference stopped sponsoring football after the 1985 season. Arkansas departed for the SEC in 1991, signaling the beginning of the end for the Southwest Conference, long associated with N.C.A.A.

“In some ways, the challenges are greater than I anticipated,” Iger told CNBC in a revealing interview last month. But under Iger 2.0, Disney has cultivated even more headaches for itself, including a morale crisis sparked by one surprisingly candid interview with CNBC on July 13. Naturally, the comments set off alarms within Disney General Entertainment Content, the division that operates Disney’s broadcast and cable networks. A few days after the Faber interview, Iger tried to smooth things over at an off-site meeting with senior managers. But Disney appears to be all-in on the boss, even though the sequel almost never lives up to the original.

Dominion Voting Systems urged a Delaware judge to compel Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, and his son, Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch, to appear live in court during the upcoming trial over its $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox and its networks. In a letter to Judge Eric Davis on Wednesday, Dominion urged the judge to compel both Murdochs to appear live. In earlier court papers Dominion did not included the Murdochs on its list for live testimony, although it had been earlier discussed in court. Fox had opposed Murdoch, as well as the other Fox Corp. executives, giving their testimony live in court. They had also pointed to the elder Murdoch's age, 92, as a reason for why he couldn't appear live in court.
Executives largely shrugged off a new 1% tax on stock buybacks as the cost of doing business. Even with the 1% tax, stock buybacks are the preferred way to return cash to shareholders, Mr. Krone said at a conference in February. Stock repurchases by Berkshire and the publicly traded companies it owns benefited investors, he wrote in the Feb. 25 letter. For one, share repurchases typically don’t commit them to continuing to buy shares, and offer flexibility on timing. “We only really consider share repurchases when we have an attractive repurchase price,” the CFO said.
