The auction could start a new chapter for the 113-year-old company, which has been owned by Venezuela for almost 40 years. Washington and Venezuela's political opposition wanted Citgo to anchor the country's economic future under a democratically elected government. The sale could become the biggest court auction ever held. Motiva, Valero and Citgo's ultimate parent, Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, did not reply to requests for comment. "Citgo will be strategic for Venezuela in the next 20-25 years, not only as a refining company, but with an expanded role," director Medina said.

A state oil company PDVSA's logo is seen at a gas station in Caracas, Venezuela May 17, 2019. The U.S. on Wednesday lifted most restrictions on Venezuela for six months for producing, selling and exporting oil to its chosen markets. But it is not expected to significantly boost Venezuela's deteriorated oil production or immediately lead to stronger exports. Venezuela can now receive direct payments for goods or services under the license issued by OFAC, which oversees American sanctions. PDVSA and Venezuela's oil ministry did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

Despite energy's outperformance so far this summer, Trivariate Research CEO Adam Parker may still find himself to be a market contrarian when picking the sector as his top bullish play. "Energy is the best-performing sector over the last three months, but nobody's talking about it," he told CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " on Wednesday. "I think demand/supply dynamics look very, very bullish in any longer-term view, so I like that sector a lot." Over the past three months, the energy sector of the S & P 500 has gained about 13.5%. Big performers in the sector include Marathon Petroleum , up nearly 38% in the past three months, and Valero Energy, with a 28% gain during the period.

For investors looking to play this trend, here are some energy stocks with the greatest long-term upside potential. The sector has added 0.5% this week as oil prices rallied from news of extended voluntary oil supply cuts from Saudi Arabia and Russia until year-end. Oil and natural gas company Diamondback Energy is another name on the list. Natural gas producer EQT , oil and gas giant EOG Resources , as well as petroleum refining and marketing company Valero Energy , are also Wall Street favorites. For investors looking for energy stocks but who do not want to bet on individual names, the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) and the iShares U.S. Energy ETF (IYE) track companies in the sector.

As August comes to a close, a handful of stocks are on the verge of an upward breakout, according to this chart pattern closely watched by technical analysts. The phenomenon, known as a golden cross pattern, occurs when an asset's 50-day moving average rises above the longer-term 200-day moving average. The pattern is regarded by Wall Street as bullish sign of a potential rally to come. Here are the stocks on the verge of a breakout, according to data from FactSet: Valero Energy is one stock approaching a so-called bullish golden cross. The stock's 50-day and 200-day moving average last hovered around $249.20 and $250.91, respectively.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. refiner Marathon Petroleum Corp (MPC.N) reported a 63% drop in second-quarter profit on Tuesday, as improved fuel supplies and slowing economic activity compressed its margins. Despite a resilient fuel demand in the U.S., an increase in global refining capacity compared with last year and slowing economic activity has brought the market down from the peaks seen in 2022. Refining and marketing margin was $22.10 per barrel for the April-June quarter, down from $37.54 per barrel a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, Marathon reported earnings of $5.32 per share, beating average analysts' estimate of $4.59 per share, on the back of improvement in refining costs and lower tax rate. Rival Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N) last week also saw its quarterly profits dwindle as refining margins came under pressure, but beat estimates on strength in its renewable diesel business.

HOUSTON/CARACAS, July 7 (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition is crafting a proposal for the country to redirect about 200,000 barrels per day of its oil exports to a trustee to pay creditors with claims on the nation's foreign assets. A negotiation team representing Venezuela in late 2022 began formal talks with some creditors, including miner Crystallex and oil producer ConocoPhillips (COP.N), to avoid the loss of Citgo. A license by the U.S. Treasury Department would be required and Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA would not have access to cash flow from those exports, Medina said. One of the opposition's arguments is that PDVSA is currently forced by U.S. sanctions to sell its oil in Asia at deep discounts. Energy analysts estimate the U.S. Gulf Coast has more room for processing Venezuela's heavy sour crude grades.

Multnomah County in Oregon is suing oil and gas companies Exxon Mobil , Shell , Chevron , BP, ConocoPhillips and related organizations for the damages caused by the 2021 Pacific Northwest heat dome. Multnomah County said these and other fossil fuel companies and entities operating in the region are significantly responsible for causing and worsening the deadly heat event. Starting on June 25, 2021, Multnomah County had three consecutive days where the heat reached 108, 112 and 116 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. The heat event is called a heat dome which is a weather event caused by a high-pressure system that in this case prevented cooler maritime winds to blow and also prevented clouds from forming. Jessica Vega Pederson, the chair of Multnomah County, is seeking to protect the residents of the county she represents.

U.S. refiners build new oil processing as travel rises

HOUSTON, May 16 (Reuters) - U.S. oil refiners aim to run at up to 94% of a total 17.9 million barrels per day processing capacity this quarter, according to company forecasts and analysts, driven in part by expectations of seasonal travel demand. This quarter is traditionally one of the year's hottest for demand as companies build gasoline and jet fuel output for the summer vacation season. He estimates refiners overall will run at 94% utilization rate this quarter, matching the 2017-19 average for the period. High prices will keep U.S. refinery utilization rates at levels near last year's about 91.7% this year and next, the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecast in January. Refiners will add the capacity to process an additional 328,000 bpd in this quarter, increasing gasoline and diesel supplies this summer.
Companies Valero Energy Corp FollowMay 9 (Reuters) - U.S. refiner Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N) said on Tuesday CEO Joseph Gorder would step down from the role on June 30 and named Chief Operating Officer Lane Riggs as his successor. Gorder has led Valero as CEO since May 1, 2014 and served as chairman of the board since Dec. 31, 2014. Gorder will remain as executive chairman, the company said. Riggs has been with Valero since 1989 and held several leadership positions in the company including overseeing refining operations, crude and feedstock supply, and planning and economics. He also served on the board of Valero Energy Partners GP LLC from 2014 to 2019.
One metric to determine if a stock is overbought or oversold is the "relative strength index," which measures the magnitude and speed of price moves. An equity with a 14-day RSI under 30 is considered oversold, which means it may be an opportunity to buy. Meanwhile, those with a 14-day RSI above 70 are considered overbought — and the names could be due for a pause. CNBC Pro screened for S & P 500 stocks in both the overbought and oversold territory, based on their RSI. Valero Energy has the lowest 14-day RSI on the list, at 16.67.
TOKYO, April 28 (Reuters) - Oil prices gained about 2% on Friday after U.S. data showed crude output was declining while fuel demand was growing. Brent crude futures rose $1.16, or 1.5%, to $79.53 a barrel by 12:24 p.m. EDT (1624 GMT), while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $1.99, or 2.7%, to $76.75. "But, today there were headlines showing there may be a solution to First Republic's problems and data pointing to a rise in oil demand and a decline in output," Flynn said. In the same report, the EIA said U.S. product supplied of crude and petroleum products - a proxy for oil demand - rose to nearly 20 million bpd and finished motor gasoline rose to 8.7 million bpd in February, the highest for both since November 2022. Oil companies like Exxon Mobil Corp(XOM.N), meanwhile, are riding a wave of strong demand and have held the line on cost-cutting implemented when fuel demand collapsed during COVID-19 lockdowns.
HOUSTON, April 28 (Reuters) - Chevron Corp (CVX.N) has stepped up sales of Venezuelan crude oil to rival U.S. refiners, adding PBF Energy Inc (PBF.N) and Marathon Petroleum Corp (MPC.N) to its list of customers for the crude, vessel tracking and loading schedules showed. Chevron, the last big U.S. oil producer still operating in U.S.-sanctioned Venezuela, has increased exports of the crude since January. So far in April, it has loaded about 148,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil at Venezuelan ports, with cargoes going to at least three other U.S. refiners, besides Chevron's own refinery. In mid-April, Chevron sold about 550,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude to PBF for its 185,000-bpd Chalmette refinery, near New Orleans, U.S. Customs data on Refinitiv Eikon showed. Chevron has sent Venezuelan crude to its 369,000-bpd Pascagoula, Mississippi, refinery and this month shipped a cargo to a Bahamas oil-storage terminal, PDVSA's schedules showed.

Wells Fargo is less optimistic on the future performance of oil refinery stocks Analyst Roger Read downgraded both Valero Energy and Marathon Petroleum to equal weight from overweight. "We raise the caution flag on the refining sector," he said in a note to clients Tuesday. Demand has also recovered compared with the long-term average but still sits below levels seen before the pandemic. But investors still have to contend with uncertainty as analysts continue to warn of a recession this year. Stock screen CNBC Pro screened for stocks in the S & P 500, Nasdaq Composite and MSCI World for cheap stocks with big upside. They met the following criteria: Stocks trading at a lower forward price-to-earnings ratio relative to their average five-year forward P/E multiple; "Buy" ratings from at least 40% of analysts covering them; Upside to average price target of 30% or more. First Solar and Broadwind Energy stood out for having among the highest potential upside on the list at 175% and 250%, respectively. Of the stocks on CNBC's screen, Valero Energy is trading at the steepest discount at 95%.
"Climate change is an existential risk and a risk to investor returns," said John Galloway, who oversees the Pennsylvania firm's engagement and proxy voting at portfolio companies, in an interview by teleconference. Galloway said in practice the proposal, which won 42% support, would have required a wholesale change to Valero's business, a decision best left to the board. "A proposal that’s asking a company to make a change that’s changing its strategy is not a proposal we're likely to support," Galloway said. U.S. Republican politicians applauded the move as responsive to their efforts to counter many companies' treatment of environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters. Galloway said the decision was driven with an eye on the varied views of its largely retail client base.
