Business: Phillips 66 is an energy manufacturing and logistics company. Percentage Ownership: n/a Average Cost: n/a Activist Commentary: Elliott is a very successful and astute activist investor. On Wednesday, Elliott sent a letter to Phillips 66, announcing that it has taken a $1 billion stake and is seeking up to two board seats. While we do not generalize like that, it is hard to imagine a more amicable and constructive activist campaign than what Elliott is proposing at Phillips 66. When implemented, Phillips 66 saw costs increase relative to peers, burning shareholders' confidence in the management team's ability to achieve its goals.

Elliott Investment Management has taken a $1 billion stake in Phillips 66 and is seeking as many as two board seats in a push to improve the company's performance, according to a Wednesday letter from the activist investor. Elliott's push for the board seats comes as Phillips has underperformed its competitors Marathon Petroleum and Valero . Elliott backed CEO Mark Lashier's plan to improve the company's performance. The CEO plans to do this through a more than $1 billion improvement in Phillips' refining segment, selling $3 billion in noncore assets and increasing the company's long-term capital return policy. Elliott said Phillips 66's stock has an upside of 75% from its last closing price of $118 if the company executes on these goals.

Contrary to popular perception, falling inflation and interest rate cuts won't necessarily be good for stocks, according to Morgan Stanley's Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson. And falling inflation is bad for stocks because rising prices are what drives earnings, he explained. "Whenever inflation is falling like it is today, it's typically not good for the average stock because it's not good for earnings growth," Wilson explained. The bad news is that "it's pretty clear" that inflation is falling, he said. "So now that inflation is coming down, and they start cutting, just be careful what that means for stocks.

Biden sought to kickstart SAF production with a $1.25 per gallon production tax credit in the IRA. To be eligible for the credit, SAF producers must demonstrate their fuel is 50% lower in emissions than conventional jet fuel. The DOE spokesperson confirmed that ethanol producers must cut emissions of they want a long-term role in SAF production. Still, ethanol producers need carbon pipelines because many ethanol plants are not near geologically appropriate underground storage sites. Other options for reducing ethanol's carbon intensity include using renewable energy at ethanol plants, or climate-friendly farming practices for corn.

He said the ground operations were "limited so far" and noted other macroeconomic concerns. Oil prices surged late Friday, with Brent jumping above $90 per barrel as Israel said its troops were ‘increasing the ground operation’ in Gaza as it seeks to eradicate the militant group Hamas. To play this market, the firm recommended a "barbell" of traditional defensive stocks, some select growth opportunities and late-cycle cyclical names. Take a look below for some of Morgan Stanley's favorite stocks in this slow-growth environment. 1) Traditional Defensives Despite its year-to-date underperformance against the broader market, health care remains Morgan Stanley's preferred defensive sector. Still, popular consumer food companies Yum Brands and McDonald's are considered growth stocks based on their market cap and volatility. 3) Late-Cycle Cyclicals Several energy companies — including Marathon Oil , Valero Energy and ConocoPhillips — can shine in a late-cycle market environment, according to Morgan Stanley.

Cutouts depicting images of oil operations are seen outside a building of Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA in Caracas, Venezuela January 28, 2019. U.S. sanctions that were in place on Venezuela since 2019 largely blocked state-run oil company PDVSA from exporting to its chosen markets. That changed last week, but Washington's six-month relaxation of the measures is too limited to spur new crude production. PDVSA also is in talks with Mercuria Energy and Sahara Energy on spot sales, the sources said. The Italian company and Spain's Repsol (REP.MC) have been in negotiations with PDVSA for months to expand gas output in Venezuela.

The widely followed energy analyst is often ahead of the curve, including in early 2020 when he warned that oil prices could dip negative. And if there's a recession, less economic activity should lead to even lower oil prices. However, higher oil prices would further weigh on demand from consumers and businesses, which raises the risk of causing — or worsening — a recession. Paul Sankey, Sankey Research (based on Bloomberg data)Although refining margins have downward momentum, Sankey said a long oil market drawdown isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion. Geopolitical tensions are an increasingly serious threat, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has recently warned, and a sudden conflict breakout could cause oil prices to surge.
