Dalio made his remarks Wednesday ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. Debt, money and the economic cycleWith uncertainty still circling around what the Fed will do at its meeting this week, Dalio raised concerns about how the country's debt will be managed. 'Acts of nature'Dalio then said "acts of nature" have historically posed a bigger threat to humanity and society than war. "Acts of nature, droughts, floods and pandemics have killed more people and been responsible for more domestic orders and international orders changing," Dalio noted. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday announced it will not formally endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, ending months of speculation about whether the labor union would back Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris. With 1.3 million members, the Teamsters union is one of the largest labor groups in the country. "As the strongest and most democratic labor union in America, it was vital for our members to drive this endorsement process. In a national survey of Teamsters members conducted after the Sept. 10 presidential debate, union members overwhelmingly backed Trump over Harris, 58% to 31%, according to results published by the union ahead of its formal endorsement. "'Right to work' laws only exist to try to kill labor unions," Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman said in the statement.

CNN —Iranian hackers sent unsolicited information they stole from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to people who were affiliated with Joe Biden’s campaign over the summer, federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The law enforcement statement Wednesday said that the hackers’ efforts to send information to US media outlets have continued. Law enforcement officials have previously said that those efforts also included an unsuccessful attempt to hack the Biden-Harris campaign. The Iranian hackers did breach the email account of longtime Trump ally Roger Stone to target campaign staff in June, CNN has reported. Investigators believe the suspected Iranian hackers breached Stone’s account and then used that email account to try to break into the account of a senior Trump campaign official as part of a persistent effort to access campaign networks.

CNN —Far be it from anyone to identify a defined strategy in the cat memes that have overtaken the American political conversation in a pivotal election year. Never mind the state’s Republican governor, who also counseled against a campaign visit, called out state troopers to city schools to ease concern about scores of bomb threats. Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested that Wednesday's larger-than-expected interest rate cut may have a limited effect on the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, because the decision's impacts will ripple into the economy slowly. "The things that we do really affect economic conditions for the most part with a lag," Powell said at his press conference, responding to a reporter's question about timing the long-awaited rate cut, just 48 days until the Nov. 5 election. Though the cut comes in the final sprint of the Trump-Harris race, Powell ensured that the Fed made its decision with a focus on consumer interests and without "any other filters." "This is my fourth presidential election at the Fed and it's always the same," Powell said.

And yet an unusual air of uncertainty overhangs this week's meeting: It’s unclear just how large the Fed’s rate cut will be. Wall Street traders and some economists foresee a growing likelihood that the central bank will announce a larger-than-usual half-point cut. Many analysts foresee a more typical quarter-point rate cut. This week's move is expected to be only the first in a series of Fed rate cuts that will extend into 2025. Over time, Fed rate cuts should lower borrowing costs for mortgages, auto loans and credit cards, as well as for business loans.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, DC, next week, according to three sources familiar with the planning. Asked Wednesday whether Harris will meet with Zelensky next week, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby suggested she might if the opportunity presented itself. “I know she has met with President Zelensky face-to-face on a couple of occasions, and I know she’s spoken to him on the phone. Earlier Wednesday, former President Donald Trump said he’ll “probably” meet with Zelensky when he travels to the US next week. Trump spoke on the phone with Zelensky in July, but a meeting between the two leaders would mark their first in-person interaction since Trump left the White House.

Ben Higgins tried to parlay his Bachelor success into a political career, but the campaign didn't last long. The focus on Bachelor Nation also makes sense given the franchise's viewership is dominated by one of the most crucial swing votes of recent elections: white women. In the past two presidential elections, white women were the most closely split demographic subgroup tracked by major exit polls. In 2016, Donald Trump won over 52% of white women against Hillary Clinton's 43%, exit polls found, while Trump bested Joe Biden in 2020 among white women 55% to 44%. The overlap between the swingiest demographic and the "Bachelor" audience suggests Bachelor Nation has value to those who seek to lead our nation.

President Joe Biden, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris have all voiced opposition to the deal. The United Steelworkers union, which has endorsed Harris for president, has also been a leading opponent of the acquisition. Earlier this month, US Steel said it would be forced to lay off workers and shutter mills without Nippon’s backing. US Steel put itself up for sale in 2023 after receiving an unsolicited $7 billion takeover offer from Ohio-based Cleveland Cliffs. The $14.9 billion deal with Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest steelmaker, resulted from that sale process.

Vice President Kamala Harris called the rate cut “welcome news,” while former President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that the decision could be politically motivated. With less than 50 days until Election Day, another question has emerged: Will the rate cut matter to voters? In fact, they already have – mortgages are based on bond yields, which have fallen in recent weeks in anticipation of a rate cut. Harris responded to the rate cut by saying she’s focused on bringing down prices. This story has been updated with reaction to the Fed’s rate cut announcement.

And an expert in political violence and terrorism is worried the worst is yet to come. The justification of political violence online is getting worse, too, with increasingly high-profile people laughing off violent incidents. Plenty of such data exists about Trump's rhetoric, Pape noted, and he said there is no doubt that "incendiary political rhetoric increases support for political violence." "What you're seeing is real-world violence reflecting this significant rhetorical support for political violence on both the right and the left," Pape said. "There is an incentive to do what we know stokes support for political violence.
