Walmart is hosting its first seller summit businesses that are part of its third-party marketplace. LAS VEGAS — Walmart is looking for new ways to woo sellers to its third-party marketplace, as it pushes to drive more online sales and close a wide gap with rival Amazon . Walmart also hired another Amazon veteran, Jare' Buckley-Cox, as vice president of Walmart Fulfillment Services. Walmart is the nation's largest retailer, but it lags far behind Amazon in online market share and e-commerce sales. Walmart's annual online sales were less than one-fifth of Amazon's last year, according to Insider Intelligence.

And in November 2001, the hotel heiress made a fashion statement that etched itself in the annals of noughties style. To top it off, she wore a tiara, applied a glossy pink lip and pink eyeshadow and clutched onto a furry Barbie-branded handbag. At just 20 years old, Paris Hilton — pictured here with Nicole Richie as the pair attended a Britney Spears concert in Las Vegas — was already being dubbed a culture-defining noughties "It Girl." LAS VEGAS — If you received a tax penalty notice from the IRS, it's possible to get the fees waived in certain situations, tax experts say. "It's like a get out of jail free card," said Rosemary Sereti, managing director of Deloitte Tax and a former IRS senior executive. "Very frequently, these two penalties run together," said Debra Estrem, managing director of private wealth controversy at Deloitte Tax, who also worked at the IRS Office of the Chief Counsel. Another fee, the accuracy-related penalty, is typically assessed at 20% of the underpayment amount for cases of "negligence or disregard," according to the IRS. There's also a high fee for civil fraud — "a whopping 75% penalty" — but the IRS has the "burden of proof" for those cases, she said.

But there's still work to do, according to National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins. However, despite customer service boosts, the agency is still working through a sizable backlog — including amended returns, filings in suspense and other correspondence, she said. Collins said the IRS is currently juggling 3.7 million amended returns, 6.8 million "in suspense" with missing information and 5.3 million pieces of correspondence. This season, the agency has prioritized phone service and answered more than 85% of calls from key phone lines in less than five minutes. "The problem is, we are now back to a backlog of paper correspondence and amended returns, similar to where we were a year ago," she said.

LAS VEGAS — Tax savings aren't typically the main reason for philanthropy. But if you're planning to donate money, certain charitable giving strategies provide a bigger tax benefit. Roughly 33% of taxpayers itemized deductions in 2017, compared with fewer than 10% in 2021, said Hoyt, speaking at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' annual conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Given these constraints, investors can maximize tax breaks by "bunching gifts," Hoyt said. "Concentrate your gifts in one year, as opposed to spreading them over several."

LAS VEGAS — College is a major expense for many families, but a payment strategy can provide significant tax savings, according to a college funding expert. "Distribution planning is not just for retirement," said certified financial planner Ross Riskin, chief learning officer for the Investments & Wealth Institute. Families also need a plan when tapping assets to pay for college, he said. Education funding can be complicated, especially when you're juggling eligibility for college tax credits, Riskin said at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' annual conference in Las Vegas on Monday. However, you can't "double dip" tax breaks by claiming one of these credits and withdrawing money from a 529 college savings plan for the same expense.

A string of jabs and a crisp right hand. Another assistant coach leaned on the top rope with a clicker in his right hand, and announced that Haney had just surpassed 2,000 punches thrown. Haney, 24, was not just pitty-pat punching to run up numbers as he trains for his title defense on Saturday night against Vasiliy Lomachenko, 35. During a brief pause, the coach holding the mitts wandered over to a corner of the ring and grumbled that Haney had nearly broken his hands. When the action resumed, Bill Haney, Devin’s father and head trainer, asked to borrow a reporter’s notebook and pen.
Tom Holland is Spider-Man in the Sony-Marvel film "Spider-Man: No Way Home." LAS VEGAS — CinemaCon kicked off Monday with a major announcement from Sony Pictures — its upcoming "Kraven the Hunter" would mark the first R-rated Marvel film produced by the studio. "F--- yes, it's rated R," said Kraven himself Aaron Taylor-Johnson in a pretaped teaser for the film before Sony showed the first trailer for the profane and bloody action flick. Sony showed 14 minutes of the film — due out June 2 — to CinemaCon audiences, who laughed and cheered for the uniquely animated feature. Sony also showcased a clip from Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming R-rated drama "No Hard Feelings" to raucous applause.
Growing up in Las Vegas, Sandra Douglass Morgan never dreamed about making history — she just wanted to make herself, and her parents, proud. But Douglass Morgan didn't need to eavesdrop to understand that she and her family would be treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. Douglass Morgan, now 44, made a promise to herself: No matter what she did, she would champion equity and respect. Months later — and after the abrupt departure of two presidents — Davis approached Douglass Morgan about the job. Douglass Morgan sought the counsel of friends and family, including her husband, Don Morgan, who played four years in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.

Central London's City of Westminster is its political heart, while the City of London is where the capital's financial decisions happen. But be warned: Several paths across Hyde Park are pedestrian-only, and police often fine people who cycle on them. The City of London is a blend of old and new, with St Paul's Cathedral close to skyscrapers as well as Roman ruins. While north London has Hampstead Heath, south of the river is Richmond Park, which dwarfs its northern counterpart in size. There's also a branch in central London's Covent Garden — the flower-filled restaurant The Petersham — that has an sit-down deli and bar.

LAS VEGAS — MGM Resorts International has closed on the sale of land on the Las Vegas Strip that was the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, the company announced Friday. The 15-acre Village property was purchased by the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation based in central North Dakota. Concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival gathered there on Oct. 1, 2017, when a gunman opened fire from his hotel room above. Planning for the memorial has been underway since late 2019, but it could be years before the final tribute is unveiled. But the Tribes “have demonstrated that they care about our community, its future and, of course, its past,” he wrote.

Lucky for me, it's only a two-and-a-half hour flight from Los Angeles, where I live and work. I was put on a flight out of Burbank Airport, another airport in Los Angeles, which took a $50 Uber ride to get to. If I could at least make it to Las Vegas, I'd probably be able to figure it out, since Las Vegas is such a major hub for Southwest. Courtesy of Brady Goodman-WilliamsThe Las Vegas airport was a nightmare. They knew my bag had made it to Denver, but they didn't know when it would come back to Los Angeles.
About a dozen people had gathered to show support for the Ely prisoners on the ninth day of their hunger strike. According to the Department of Corrections, two dozen people were participating in the hunger strike as of Friday morning. Marcus Kelley hugs Nina Fernandez, mother of one of the prisoners participating in the Ely State Prison hunger strike, during a rally in Las Vegas, on Dec. 9, 2022. In a statement released hours after the Las Vegas protest, William Gittere, acting director of the Nevada prison system, announced a policy change to “administrative sanctions” in light of the hunger strike. Prior to the hunger strike, prisoners could be punished with “concurrent” sanctions, meaning multiple privileges might be taken from a prisoner at the same time, the statement said.
It belies a conventional narrative that Democrats were universally ceding Latino voters to the Republican Party, a story line repeated throughout the run-up to the Nov. 8 midterms. Instead, indicators show the GOP in danger of losing Latino voters in this region, a prospect that could mean being boxed out of the Southwest for the long term. In New Mexico, the state with the most residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino in the country, Latino Democrats won nearly every statewide race. Even with some Latino voters staying home, NBC News exit polling showed that Cortez Masto won more than 60% of that vote. Still, there’s plenty of danger signs for Democrats when it comes to Latino voters, particularly among men.
Despite predictions from her opponent that she'd struggle with Latinos, 62 percent said they voted for Cortez Masto and 33 percent backed Laxalt, according to the NBC News Exit Poll. Laxalt tied Cortez Masto to President Joe Biden’s economic policies, blaming them both for rising inflation and gas prices. Laxalt also sought to tie Cortez Masto to rising crime and what Republicans have said are Biden’s failed border policies — themes that pervaded many Republican campaigns. Cortez Masto, however, sought to woo Republican voters in places like Washoe County, touting her work with people like Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. Laxalt handily won the state’s 15 rural counties, in some counties winning 80 percent of the vote, while Cortez Masto steadily led the reliably blue Clark County, home of Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS — A former model charged in the beating death of a California doctor whose body was found in a car trunk outside Las Vegas has accepted a plea agreement. Kelsey Turner, now 29, entered an Alford plea Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder in the 2019 killing of 71-year-old psychiatrist Thomas Kirk Burchard, court records show, according to NBC affiliate KSNV of Las Vegas. Prosecutors say Turner, her boyfriend and their roommate were involved in Burchard's death. Diana Pena, the roommate, testified Turner was romantically involved with Burchard and was upset by images and messages saved on his phone. Investigators were able to locate Turner at her home, which records showed Burchard paid her rent.
LAS VEGAS — Major League Baseball’s front offices began placing bets on their offseason roster-building moves, with some teams focused not on landing new talent, but hanging onto the stars they have—including Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander and especially Aaron Judge. The league’s General Manager meetings here this week are the first of two official gatherings of club and league representatives this winter; the Winter Meetings, the industry-wide convention that takes place in December, will be the second.
