The man who the police said pushed a subway rider in front of an oncoming train in East Harlem on Monday night, killing him, appears to have had a history of committing violent acts against others and struggles with mental illness. The man, Carlton McPherson, 24, was arrested and charged with murder after pushing another man in front of an oncoming No. The man who was killed was identified by two police officials and an internal report as Jason Volz, 54. Responding officers found Mr. Volz underneath the train car with “severe trauma to the body and face,” according to the report. Witnesses pointed out Mr. McPherson to officers as he was leaving the scene and he was taken into custody.

Before the paths of Jason Volz and Carlton McPherson collided in a terrible moment on a Harlem subway platform on Monday, their lives had seemed to be heading in opposite directions. Mr. McPherson had been hospitalized at least half a dozen times since last year for mental health treatment, according to someone who has seen some of his medical records. Last October, a man whom prosecutors believe to be Mr. McPherson — he had the same name and birth year — was charged with beating a Brooklyn homeless shelter employee with a cane. Mr. Volz, 54, was recovering from addiction and had also endured homelessness, but had gotten sober two years ago and had just moved into a new apartment, his ex-wife said. On Monday night, the police say, Mr. McPherson, 24, walked up to Mr. Volz on the uptown platform of the 125th Street station on Lexington Avenue and shoved him in front of an oncoming No.

A man was killed Monday evening after being pushed onto the subway tracks in an unprovoked attack at the 125th Street station at Lexington Avenue in East Harlem, according to the Police Department. At 6:48 p.m., a man on the uptown platform shoved the person onto the tracks in front of the oncoming No. 4 train, which was unable to stop, a police spokeswoman said. Train service at the station resumed by 9 p.m., but a large number of police officers remained at the scene. “The subway has been insane lately,” Ray Velez, 60, from the Bronx, said as he waited on the 125th St. platform two hours after the attack.

Serge Raoul, an Alsatian-born former filmmaker who with his brother, Guy, a classically trained chef, founded Raoul’s, a clubby French bistro and SoHo canteen in Lower Manhattan that drew generations of artists, rock stars, writers, models, machers and movie people — along with those who yearned to be near them — died on March 8 at his home in Nyack, N.Y. The cause was a glioblastoma, said his son, Karim Raoul. Serge was on hiatus from making documentaries and Guy had been working as a chef uptown when Serge set out to find him a restaurant. A friend thought Luizzi’s, a cozy and well-worn spaghetti and meatballs joint on Prince Street between Sullivan and Thompson, might be for sale. As it turned out, the owners, Ida and Tom Luizzi, were happy to make a deal if it included the provisions that Mr. Luizzi could drop in every day and that Inky the cat could stay.

The decision exposes X, formerly Twitter, to claims that it gave paying “verified” subscribers more leeway than non-paying users to illegally share copyrighted music. The lawsuit, filed last June by the National Music Publishers’ Association — whose members include Universal, Sony and Warner Music Group — also claims that X delayed responding to copyright infringement notices and didn’t take enough “reasonable steps” to combat repeat offenders. But she threw out claims by music publishers that X was directly responsible for stealing artists’ intellectual property. Most large social media platforms, such as TikTok, pay licensing fees to music publishers in exchange for giving users the ability to share songs on the websites. In the case against X, music publishers cited more than 1,700 songs whose copyright X has allegedly infringed, including hits such as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” featuring Bruno Mars.

On the Eve of the Super Bowl, Usher Proves His Mastery
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Jon Pareles | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It has taken perseverance, extraordinary musical gifts and a little luck for Usher to land where he is right now. At 45, the R&B singer and songwriter Usher Raymond is releasing his new album, “Coming Home,” just two days before he will headline the Super Bowl halftime show. His single “Good Good,” released last summer, has racked up tens of millions of plays on Spotify. It’s one of the 20 tracks on “Coming Home,” an album that sums up and expands what Usher does best. “Good Good,” which features Summer Walker and 21 Savage, is a downright mature post-breakup song about genuinely staying friends afterward.

ERRAND INTO THE MAZE: The Life and Works of Martha Graham, by Deborah Jowitt“Old age is a pain in the neck,” Martha Graham wrote in her 1991 memoir, “Blood Memory.” Death, though, has been good to her. Already in the 2020s there has been a book devoted to Graham’s Cold War activity and another (more sweeping) that a reviewer for The New York Times found fact-choked and unevenly paced. Deborah Jowitt’s “Errand Into the Maze: The Life and Works of Martha Graham” is, by contrast, a study in balance and grace. That girlish enthusiasm peeps through “Errand Into the Maze,” named for a 1947 work that premiered at the original Ziegfeld Theater. It is also Jowitt’s first book in almost 20 years, since a biography of another titan of the field, Jerome Robbins.

She died of lung cancer in 1978 never having spoken to Capote again. In the fall of 1955, Mrs. Woodward shot and killed her husband at their estate in Oyster Bay, in the middle of the night, believing that he was a burglar. Capote decided it was not, even though someone eventually pleaded guilty to trying to rob the Woodward house on the night of the shooting. In mid-October, just as Capote’s story was set to drop, Mrs. Woodward killed herself in her uptown apartment. While she had had a difficult life and there was no way to know why she did it, many speculated about the correlation.

FILTERWORLD: How Algorithms Flattened Culture, by Kyle ChaykaThis dispatch began from an uptown location of Dig (formerly Dig Inn), a small chain of “fast casual” restaurants headquartered in New York City. The walls are white-painted brick, the tables are marble and the cardboard bowls are packed with colorful, healthy foodstuffs. Only the insipid pop music that blares through the speakers discourages lingering. Dig’s food, our “feeds”; their appetizers, our apps — they are all of a piece. Chayka has visited a lot of establishments with a similar aesthetic, which he has dubbed AirSpace, like a Nike sneaker, for its geographically neutral comfort.

NEW YORK (AP) — Broadway audiences will soon be hearing the hit songs of Alicia Keys — not far from where the multiple-Grammy-winner grew up. “Hell's Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical by the singer-songwriter, is making the move uptown from off-Broadway to the Shubert Theatre this spring. The musical features Keys’ best-known hits: “Fallin’,” “No One,” “Girl on Fire,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” and, of course, “Empire State of Mind,” as well as four new songs. “Hell's Kitchen,” in a way, is a full-circle moment for the Keys' family. In 2011, she was a co-producer of the Broadway play “Stick Fly,” for which she supplied some music.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Urban rivers, lakes, and parks can also be the key to making cities more resilient to climate change. The 1,200 tons of sand near Greenwich Village along the Hudson river would have to do. But there's no public pool nearby, and no sanctioned river swim spots in the city. The sandy bluff on Gansevoort peninsula is part of the much larger Hudson River park and looks out over Little Island, a whimsical, highly instagrammable transformation of Pier 55. But a different dynamic seemed to be emerging against the backdrop of vastly different expectations. He imagined an entirely different and urgent reaction, he said, if the child in the picture had been African American. The campus protests of the late 1960s sought in part to dismantle the in loco parentis role that colleges and universities had held in American life. Ten years ago, when the former New York City police commissioner, Ray Kelly, was invited to speak at Brown University, students objected. The music publishers' lawsuit appears to be the first case over song lyrics and the first against Anthropic, which has drawn financial backing from Google (GOOGL.O), Amazon (AMZN.O) and former cryptocurrency billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried. The lawsuit accused Anthropic of infringing the publishers' copyrights by copying their lyrics without permission as part of the "massive amounts of text" that it scrapes from the internet to train Claude to respond to human prompts. For example, the lawsuit said that Claude will provide relevant lyrics from Don McLean's "American Pie" when asked to write a song about the death of rock pioneer Buddy Holly. The publishers asked the court for money damages and an order to stop the alleged infringement.
