How does a government shutdown affect the stock market?
As far as directly affecting the stock market, however, it would be unusual for a government shutdown to be deeply detrimental.
According to Evercore senior managing director Julian Emanuel, "the history of government shutdowns has been largely irrelevant for the stock market.
It didn't in 1954 and it didn't in 2020, two 'tight government' years," Emanuel wrote.
"But when stocks play politics like they are now and will be for another 13+ months, it does mean more volatility."
