That sound of unimaginable terror is what a psychiatrist recorded when he put a man named Barney Hill under hypnosis in his office one day in 1964. Estelle Parsons and James Earl Jones in a scene from "The UFO Incident," a 1975 television movie based on the Hills' alleged encounter. Both Hills recalled the encounter under hypnosis, but Barney Hill grew terrified reliving the event. … God, I’m scared!”The Hills’ story changed the way people regarded alien encounters. Barney Hill died of a stroke in 1969, and Betty continued to claim that the abduction occurred.

The office has received approximately 800 reports of unidentified objects to investigate as of this past April, up from 650 reports in August 2022, Sean Kirkpatrick, who heads the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office at the Pentagon told CNN. “I am worried from a national security perspective.”But Kirkpatrick could offer few details about why certain reports raised suspicions about foreign involvement. The portal for historical sightings is set to open sometime in the next month or so, Kirkpatrick told CNN. Its purpose is to validate or refute past reports of unidentified objects, checking them against other reports and cataloging them for possible further analysis. Asked if the US government should have created an effort to handle unidentified objects earlier, Kirkpatrick demurred.

Unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, have captured the imagination of Americans for decades. But much of the conversation has been confined to science fiction movies and novels. A big one suggests the U.S. has been concealing alien life and technology in secret compounds like Area 51 in Nevada. A 2019 poll found 68% of respondents believed the U.S. government knows "more about UFOs than it is telling us." Then, in June 2022, NASA convened an independent expert panel to help study UAP incidents and advise the Department of Defense on how to gather and interpret data on UAPs.

In its 33-page report, an independent team commissioned by NASA cautioned that the negative perception surrounding UFOs poses an obstacle to collecting data. “We want to shift the conversation about UAPs from sensationalism to science," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said. Instead, the group relied on unclassified data in an attempt to better understand unexplained sightings in the sky. The government refers to unexplained sightings as UAPs versus UFOs. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

NASA says the sightings can be explained by earthly phenomena like planes, balloons, and weather. The announcement comes from a year-long investigation into how NASA can better study UFOs. The report includes suggestions for new ways to study UAP and states that there's no evidence for alien visitors to Earth. Spergel said their efforts might include starting a smartphone app to help the public quickly report UAP sightings without stigma.

A highly anticipated report published by NASA on Thursday underscored challenges to understanding unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP, including stigma and poor data quality. The report, which comes from NASA’s UAP Independent Study Team, found no evidence to suggest that UFOs have an extraterrestrial origin. “The NASA independent study team did not find any evidence that UAP have an extra terrestrial origin,” Nelson said. “Stigma has limited reporting by pilots, both civilian and military,” David Spergel, chair of the UAP Independent Study Team, said at the press briefing. When asked during a briefing in May why the team doesn’t use the term UFO for the report, Evans said “because of the stigma associated with UFOs.”

"The mission of NASA is to find out the unknown," Nelson said. The NASA panel, comprising experts in scientific fields ranging from physics to astrobiology, issued the report after holding its first public meeting in June. NASA said the new director of UAP research will handle "centralized communications, resources and data analytical capabilities to establish a robust database for the evaluation of future UAP." The report said defense and intelligence analysts lacked sufficient data to determine the nature of some of the objects. CNN —An independent report found that NASA could play a crucial role in collecting more data on UFOs — or what are officially known as unidentified anomalous phenomena, the space agency announced Thursday. Ultimately, the group determined that NASA should be using satellites and other instruments to seek more information about the phenomena. In response to the findings, the space agency also announced Thursday it is appointing its first director of UAP research. “This is the first time that NASA has taken concrete action to seriously look into UAP,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said during a news conference. Dan Evans, NASA’s assistant deputy associate administrator for research, said during a Thursday panel that the space agency would not be publicly releasing the name of NASA’s new UAP research director in part because of the potential for harassment.

NASA also created a new position to lead UAP research, but officials won't say who they appointed. NASA officials cited harassment concerns but said they might share the new UAP chief's name someday. As part of its new plan to tackle mysterious phenomena, NASA created a new officer position: Director of UAP Research. That's why I'm announcing that NASA has appointed a NASA Director of UAP Research," Bill Nelson, NASA's administrator, said in a press briefing on Thursday. Mexican journalist and long-time UFO enthusiast Jaime Maussan showed politicians at the hearing on Tuesday two tiny "bodies" displayed in cases, with three fingers on each hand and elongated heads. He claimed they were found in Peru in 2017 and were not related to any life on Earth. The images from the congressional hearing, the first of its kind in Mexico, sparked international curiosity as well as substantial scorn. Maussan, speaking to Reuters on Thursday, said his critics had yet to present evidence to counter his claims. "If you have something strange, make samples available to the world's scientific community, and we'll see what's there," he said.

The "neural network planner" that Shroff and others were working on took a different approach. Faced with a situation, the neural network chooses a path based on what humans have done in thousands of similar situations. By early 2023, the neural network planner project had analyzed 10 million clips of video collected from the cars of Tesla customers. By mid-April 2023, it was time for Musk to try the new neural network planner. "Oh, wow," he said, "even my human neural network failed here, but the car did the right thing."

A hat-shaped symbol used as part of a Roman Catholic cardinal’s coat of arms has been misrepresented online as a UFO symbol to question whether the Vatican is ruled by aliens. A coat of arms of a cardinal, the pope’s highest advisors, includes the red galero, a wide-brimmed hat, with long tassels on either side. Yet online posts sharing an image of the coat of arms ask, “Is the Vatican ruled by aliens?” (here) and (here). Instead, a smaller red hat called a biretta is now given to newly installed cardinals, Father Richard Kunst, a priest who collects papal artifacts, explains on his webpage (here). The posts share a photo of a cardinal’s coat of arms, not a UFO symbol at the Vatican.

Russell and Tunkel pointed to falling launch costs, continued demand for satellites and India's recent moon landing as reasons to be excited about the future for the space industry. The most successful of these funds, both by total assets and performance this year, is Cathy Wood's Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF (ARKX) . The ARK fund takes a broad approach to finding space stocks. The Ark fund even has some stocks that are only tangentially related to space, at least for now, like Amazon and Google-parent Alphabet . For investors looking for a more narrow approach, BCA described the Procure Space ETF (UFO) as the "purest play on space exploration."
