All told, there is a nearly $6 trillion in revenue opportunity from AI across the internet industry, a March report from Morgan Stanley found. "UBER/LYFT/DASH already use ML [machine learning] in their matching algorithms (matching rides/eaters with drivers/couriers)," Morgan Stanley wrote in its report. AI tailwind for Uber Uber has both its ride-sharing service and UberEats food delivery business. According to Morgan Stanley, AI and machine learning will be a tailwind to network efficiency. The second feature is group ordering for grocery, which allows households to share their grocery orders on UberEats. Group orders on Uber Eats are available starting on May 17, while group rides on Uber will roll out in the upcoming weeks, though Uber did not provide a specific date.

In the first quarter, total orders rose 27% to 512 million, while analysts on average had expected a 20.8% rise to 488.2 million, as per Refinitiv data. Delivery drivers expercienced a boom during the pandemic, but many say that luck has run out. But without being able to see exactly how much they'll be tipped, drivers say it's a gamble. Since the height of online ordering in the thick of the pandemic, delivery drivers have slowly seen their once-lucrative profits fade away. Now, drivers say they still have a hard time turning a profit unless the tip is worth it. According to the New York Times, Uber and DoorDash drivers figure they're paid about $3.50 per order, plus $1 per mile they have to drive.
He's said to have played it at a pitch meeting, and says he's been gaming while under house arrest. Former Domino's CEO Ritch Allison bought $3,919 worth of pizza in 2021, the Financial Times found. The former CEO was compensated for a nearly $4,000 personal pizza expense, the Financial Times reported, citing Domino's proxy filing from last year. As FT points out, the previous proxy shows Allison's nearly $4,000 in pizza in 2021 was relatively tame. During his tenure as CEO, Allison pushed innovation and a culture of risk-taking at the tech-forward company. Curious what $3, 919 gets you in Domino's pizza pies?

Chick-fil-A is opening a pop-up break room in New York City for delivery drivers. To get access, delivery drivers just need to show proof that they've completed any food delivery, not just a Chick-Fil-A delivery, within the past week for DoorDash, UberEats, Grubhub, Postmates, Caviar, or Seamless. By providing these services, Chick-fil-A is offering a solution to some of the biggest complaints delivery drivers have about their jobs. Some delivery drivers even say they carry plastic bottles to pee in while working. The lack of facilities for New York's estimated 65,000 food delivery drivers has been an ongoing discussion for some time.
New York CNN —Covid spurred more people to order food out, making delivery workers busier than ever. Courtesy of Chick-fil-A, Inc.“For Chick-fil-A, the food delivery community has become an increasingly important part of each restaurant’s business,” the company said in a statement Wednesday. For Chick-fil-A, caring for delivery workers is also a way to protect the brand’s reputation. Mayor Eric Adams in October announced an initiative that will create hubs for delivery workers, turning empty spaces like vacant newsstands into rest areas. Adams noted at the time that “while most people have a break room to rest while at work, app-based food delivery workers do not.”
Chipotle Mexican Grill is launching a new spinoff, called Farmesa Fresh Eatery, in a California ghost kitchen. And, "when the time is right," Lawton said, Chipotle will use its loyalty program database to attract potential Farmesa customers. When opened, the Santa Monica location will be Kitchen United's 24th ghost kitchen. For Chipotle, Kitchen United's model allows the restaurant chain to test out the new brand with reduced risk. For now, Chipotle's chief purpose with the location is simply to learn, but that doesn't mean Farmesa won't grow.

In a survey done by US Foods, delivery drivers and customers agree that $4 is a reasonable tip for those delivering food. Tips are more essential than they've ever been, as rideshare delivery drivers get fewer protections and perks than delivery drivers traditionally employed by restaurants. US Foods' data shows that customers, on average, are willing to pay $8.50 total for extra delivery charges, including tips, delivery fees, and service fees. The gig economy made tipping crucialRideshare delivery drivers aren't employees of the company they're driving for. While delivery drivers employed by a specific restaurant may have access to benefits, health insurance, and even help with costs like gas, rideshare delivery drivers don't have access to these things.
Starbucks, which also uses Uber Eats, said loyalty members cannot earn rewards through delivery. While some restaurant chains offer a limited menu on third-party delivery apps, Starbucks plans to offer about 95% of its core menu on DoorDash. StarbucksUber Eats, on the other hand, told Insider that the Starbucks menu on its app "is optimized for delivery to maintain quality. She saw an ad for Hampr on Facebook in March 2021, and now she does 18 to 25 loads of laundry a day. Before starting on the app Hampr, I worked at Wendy's as a manager. After finishing up the third round of orders, I'll make dinner with the kids and have family time. Saturday and Sunday are my busiest, when I typically do more than 20 loads of laundry a day. It's a great job because I can do most of the laundry at home, although on crazy days, I'll fill additional orders at the laundromat.
Even though dining out has resumed in force, people are still ordering food online from the comfort of their homes like they did during lockdowns. The Labor Department said it would revisit rules that designate whether workers are classified as employees or independent contractors, a move that could affect millions of gig and contract workers in healthcare, restaurants, ride-share transportation, and many other industries. The department released a rule proposal on Tuesday that would change how labor laws define independent contractors. The new rule, if approved, would rely on a “multifactor economic reality test” to determine whether a worker is truly in business by themselves and controls aspects of their employment like whether they perform managerial duties, how they are supervised and whether they are able to set prices.
