☆ Opinion: LGBTQ Americans are in a state of emergency –and we should all do more about it

CNN —This week, the LGBTQ rights group Human Rights Campaign (HRC) declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ Americans, the first time the organization has ever done so. And frankly, given the state of women’s rights in many of the same states attacking LGBTQ people, women’s groups should do the same. And no company should have to worry that a display of affirmation for LGBTQ Americans will result in vandalism, threats or harassment of employees. It is unconscionable for any company to require its employees live in states that criminalize abortion or that are attacking LGBTQ rights.

Schumer said on Wednesday that the Senate would not make any amendments on the bill, which would send it back to the House for re-approval. The Republican-controlled House passed the bill on Wednesday evening in a 314-117 vote. His counterpart, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, also signaled on Wednesday that he would work for fast passage, saying, "I'll be proud to support it without delay." Chastising House Republican negotiators for agreeing to what he sees as a weak compromise with Democrats, Lee lamented, "With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?"

"Once this bill reaches the Senate, I will move to bring it to the floor as soon as possible," Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday. His counterpart, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, also signaled that he would work for fast passage, saying, "I'll be proud to support it without delay." The chamber's rules require 60 votes to advance most legislation, meaning at least nine Republican votes are needed to pass most bills, including the debt ceiling deal. On Wednesday he vowed to vote against the bill, but did not reiterate his threat to try to delay it. Chastising House Republican negotiators for agreeing to what he sees as a weak compromise with Democrats, Lee lamented, "With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?"

The NewsFrustrated, powerless and with little hope of regaining significant influence anytime soon, Republican lawmakers in Oregon have in recent years turned repeatedly to a disruptive tactic: boycotting their own legislature. It has been so disruptive that voters altered the Constitution last year to punish those who were repeatedly absent by barring them from re-election. But now, as the legislature debates contentious bills over abortion and transgender rights, some lawmakers are boycotting once again. This week, in the first significant test of the new law, three state senators reached the legal threshold of 10 unexcused absences. There are no term limits in the legislature, but some senators are facing re-election campaigns as soon as next year.

GOP lawmakers published over 500 bills on different areas in which they want to cut spending. It comes as Biden has been urging Republicans to put forth a concrete budget. GOP budget chair Jodey Arrington said the budget could take months, and the primary focus should be raising the debt ceiling. Republican lawmakers just made their latest move in the ongoing drama to raise the debt ceiling and cut spending. Now, Republicans have some ideas — or rather, over 500 proposed bills for limiting funding to a slew of federal government programs and agencies.

The contracted use of hotels was envisioned as a temporary measure, but adds strain to the asylum accommodation system. The cost of housing asylum seekers in hotels has increased over the past year, now exceeding £6 million ($7.4 million) a day, the Home Office told CNN in a statement. On Tuesday, the UK Home Office also said Afghans who have been living in temporary UK accommodation for 18 months will be given three months’ notice to move out of so-called bridging hotels. There are currently around 8,000 Afghans living in 59 bridging hotels in the UK, according to the Home Office. But campaigners also warned that the plan could exacerbate the trauma experienced by people displaced by political strife and conflict in Afghanistan.
