Bret Stephens: Gail, in our last conversation I asked you whether you would join me in calling for Democrats to find a new nominee if Joe Biden had a disastrous debate performance. You replied that it would have to be “super disastrous.”Did the president’s performance on Thursday night meet your definition of “super”? Gail Collins: Bret, I was thinking about you all through the debate. You were worried Biden would “lose it with some obvious memory lapse, slurred sentence or troubling blank stare.”I pretty much dismissed your concerns, and I was, um, sorta wrong. The funding announced Monday puts a $10 billion price tag on Pershing Square, which manages about $16 billion worth of assets. The benefit of going public is you get to make money, obviously, so it’s not hard to see why Pershing Square would want to do it. For Ackman, in particular, being at the helm of a publicly traded company could be a particularly jarring shift. Pershing Square officially hung up its activist megaphone in 2022, opting to work with a small group of companies behind the scenes. To the Editor:Re “Can Those on the Left Be Happy?,” by Ross Douthat (column, April 7):Mr. Douthat thinks, citing no evidence, that people on the left are “by nature” unhappier than moderates or conservatives, in part because he thinks we don’t believe in God anymore. The left is not “by nature” unhappy; we are often brutally honest with ourselves and unavoidably empathetic to the plights of those who suffer. If we feel more unhappy these days, it’s not because it’s in our genes. We see it all with clarity and are therefore motivated to change it. I’m a proud liberal who is determined and hopeful, and happy most of the time.

CNN —Researchers looking for clues about why some types of cancer are on the rise in younger adults say they’ve found an interesting lead: a connection to accelerated biological aging. What faster aging could tell us about cancer riskAfter adjusting the data for factors they thought might bias their results, the researchers found that accelerated aging was associated with increased risk for cancer. “There are medications that also look like they can slow down accelerated aging,” said Blaes, who is testing two of them in cancer survivors. Cancer survivors often show greater biological aging, perhaps because of the after effects of therapies like chemotherapy and radiation. It’s not quite prime time, where we would go out and prescribe those medications for people, but this is really, really important work,” Blaes said.
