LONDON — Funds raised by companies debuting on the Paris stock exchange fell by 92% in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, according to new research, underperforming other exchanges in the region. The report shows that funds raised on the Euronext Paris declined to 32.8 million euros from 402.6 million euros over the first six months of the year. Companies listed on the London Stock Exchange raised £586.2 million ($751.7 million) through initial public offerings over the first six months of the year, flat on the same period in 2022. However, there were still signs of a more subdued investment environment, with funds raised through "further issues" — additional share offerings to raise more cash — down 36% to £3.65 billion. The number of companies listing across the main and smaller alternative investment (AIM) markets in London fell to 17 from 29.

London CNN —The UK economy badly needs a boost — and the government hopes the nation’s vast pension savings might deliver one. All UK workplace pension plans offer default funds, which savers who don’t choose their own investment strategy are automatically enrolled into. Measures to tap pension fund cash come at a crucial time for an economy suffering from stubbornly high inflation, depressed investment and feeble growth. UK pension funds’ exposure to domestic stock markets has fallen even more sharply: from 53% in 1997 to 6% in 2021. The combination of measures is likely to have “far-reaching” effects on the types of assets pension funds invest in, easing companies’ access to the capital they need to grow, he added.

Hunt will also seek to roll back a European Union-era securities law, Treasury said. UK is set to approve recommendations in Rachel Kent's Independent Research Report, paving the way for a new "Research Platform" to provide a one-stop-shop for firms looking for research experts, the statement added. UK had last year announced the launch of the Investment Research Review - an independent review of financial services investment research and its contribution to UK capital markets competitiveness, headed by Kent. The approval also sets the way for potentially removing unbundling rules – an inherited EU law that requires brokers to charge a separate fee for research. "We will not countenance tax cuts if they make the battle against inflation harder," the newspaper quoted Hunt as saying.

CNN —HSBC is halving the size of its global headquarters and moving out of Canary Wharf, a business district built in the abandoned docklands of east London in the 1980s. It follows similar moves by other big companies to get rid of expensive office space in cities around the world. The bank has long been a mainstay of Canary Wharf, where it occupies 1.1 million square feet of office space. HSBC is a key tenant in Canary Wharf, and its planned departure raises questions about whether other companies will also think about leaving. Canary Wharf Group, which manages real estate in the area, declined to comment when asked about the matter Monday.

Banks call for scrapping UK share tax to boost City

LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Britain should scrap its tax on buying shares to increase London's attraction as a global financial centre as it faces fierce competition post-Brexit, banking body UK Finance said on Tuesday. Britain is reforming its financial sector following Brexit, which has fuelled concerns over London's ability to attract top company listings. "In the short-term, the 0.5% stamp duty currently charged on share purchases should be removed to reduce the cost of investing and help wider participation," UK Finance Chief Executive David Postings told an event. UK Finance launched a report which made recommendations on how to help the "pre-eminent" financial sector face tough global competition. The recommendations will feed into a broader report being compiled by the UK Capital Markets Industry Taskforce, due in the autumn.

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - Major League Baseball (MLB) is expected to send the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies across the Atlantic Ocean next year for their annual London Series of games, a source with knowledge of the plans told Reuters on Tuesday. The World Series runners up Phillies and their NL East rivals Mets have not officially been announced and plans are still being finalized. Sports Illustrated first reported the two teams would take part in the London Series. The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs are expected to play next month at London Stadium, after the league agreed last year to hold "major events" in the UK capital over a span of five years. The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) (LSEG.L) and UK trade officials visited several cities in China to promote UK capital markets recently. Wilson Xu, a banking veteran from CITIC Securities pioneering the Stock Connect programme, said liquidity will improve when there is a critical mass of Chinese listings. The Shanghai-London Stock Connect was launched in 2019 and the link was expanded last year to include Shenzhen and Switzerland. Even arrangements by SIX to allow roughly 2.5 hours of trading in a session for Chinese GDRs didn't help. Chinese companies, however, have been positive in public disclosures about their forays in Europe which have given them an alternative channel to raise funds and access foreign currency for their operations abroad.
Britain's leading role in financial services investment faces challenges from three continents, as Singapore, France and Germany also quickly catch up. "Britain attracted just three more financial services projects than France in 2021, 63 vs 60," the report, compiled with law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, said. While some recommendations refer to existing reforms, such as tweaking insurance rules to encourage green investments, the report also wants cross-border remote working made easier. Business visa rules should be amended to allow staff based overseas to work remotely for financial firms in Britain, and vice-versa, the report said. "Adopting an innovative cross-border remote working system would ...also support manufacturing businesses across the UK," the report said.
London CNN —London is used to punching well above its weight in global financial markets. And 70% of global secondary bond market trading happens in the city, according to the London Stock Exchange. Beyond the jobs they create and the tax they generate, financial markets also channel capital into companies to fund future growth. In other words, to safeguard its future, London needs to reinvigorate its stock markets. Those “unicorns” should be listing in London “at an earlier stage,” Haynes argues, “rather than growing through private equity and being sold off to Nasdaq.”Hoggett of the London Stock Exchange puts it this way: “London needs to be young, scrappy and hungry.”
London Stock Exchange urges rapid UK reforms after Arm's snub

LONDON, March 3 (Reuters) - The London Stock Exchange said on Friday that chip designer Arm's decision to pursue a U.S.-only listing this year rather than return to London's stock market showed Britain needed to speed up plans for regulatory and market reforms. Arm, owned by Japan's SoftBank (9984.T), is to pursue a U.S.-only listing this year, dashing the British government's hopes that the tech giant would choose London. "Arm is a great British company and a world leader in their field which we continue to believe can be very well served by the UK capital markets," said Julia Hoggett, chief executive of London Stock Exchange plc, part of London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG.L). Arm has not completely ruled out an eventual London listing and has said it intends to consider a subsequent IPO there in due course, without providing further details. On Thursday, Dublin-based building materials group CRH (CRH.L) had announced a decision to its primary listing from London to the United States.
LONDON, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Investment firms and brokers in Britain teamed up on Thursday to back a new standalone retail platform to strengthen access for small investors to the UK capital market. "The collaboration of market participants using this service is an important step towards the more equitable inclusion of retail investors in UK capital markets," said a joint statement from brokers. One aim is to make it easier for retail investors to participate in capital markets, a step the European Union is also working on, with legislative proposals due in April. The government has said it will implement recommendations from a review of secondary capital markets to overhaul company fundraisings and give more access to retail investors. REX enables retail investors to participate in capital markets transactions such as initial public offers and follow-on equity offerings through retail brokers and wealth managers.
LONDON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Frankfurt expands derivatives clearing on Monday in an early test of how well European Union ambitions to lure trillions of euros of business from London could work in practice. Clarus Graphic on Swaps Clearing'TAKE YEARS'ESMA will calibrate how much of each of the three specified derivatives contracts banks must clear in the bloc. The other two are euro credit default swaps (CDS), also cleared by ICE in London and Chicago, and euro interest rate swaps (IRS), dominated by London Stock Exchange Group's LCH in London. Brussels is allowing EU banks to continue clearing in London until June 2025, though industry officials say an extension is inevitable given the time it could take for enough clearing to shift given banks' hostility. ICE said that by the third quarter of last year, ICE in Chicago cleared 88% of euro CDS instruments, with 8% at ICE in London, and 4% at LCH.
LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Paris' luxury-laden stock exchange is now worth more than London's. France's CAC All Shares index (.PAX) is now worth almost $3 trillion, making it Europe's largest stock market by value thanks to demand for its luxury-retailer blue chips. Reuters GraphicsFUND FLOWSSo far in 2022, funds investing in UK stocks have seen record outflows of 23 billion euros, according to Refinitiv Lipper, up from almost 18 billion euros last year and the 14.6 billion euros shed in 2016, when Britain voted to leave the European Union. Annual outflows from French equity funds are much smaller - at 2 billion euros this year.
