It was the top box office film of the year, earning $1.4 billion worldwide, and it became Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing film ever, outpacing both “Dark Knight” movies, “Wonder Woman” and every chapter in the “Harry Potter” franchise. It was a DayGlo-pink rebuttal to decades of conventional Hollywood thinking, and its success seemed to herald a new paradigm for the film industry. Movies written and directed by women and focused on female protagonists could attract enormous audiences to multiplexes around the world. Yet in the 12 months since the movie’s release, little has changed in Hollywood. The box office is down 17 percent from last year at this time, and studios spooked by a fickle audience (yes to “Twisters,” no to “Fall Guy”) are again questioning the reliability of the theatrical marketplace.

“Twisters” was on pace to collect roughly $80 million in the United States and Canada over the weekend. Box office analysts had predicted “Twisters” would take in about $50 million, citing prerelease surveys that track audience interest. “Twisters” cost an estimated $155 million to make, not including tens of millions in marketing costs. It was released in North America by Universal Pictures, which booked it into 4,151 theaters. You should perhaps brace for “Twisters: Even More Twisters.” Based on strong turnout in North America over the weekend, it is almost guaranteed that Universal will explore another sequel.

CNN —Amid celebration around the release of his new movie “Twisters,” Glen Powell took a moment to honor an acting “legend” who came before him. The “Hit Man” star posted a picture of himself alongside late actor Bill Paxton – who starred in the 1996 film “Twister” – on X on Friday. “As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell wrote in the caption. That movie is “Twister,” the story of a lovably eclectic band of tornado chasers who follow soon-to-be-divorced Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt right into the eye of many storms. We got cows.”One friend said she watched it every single time she happened upon it on cable. As Janet Maslin wrote in The Times when the movie came out, “Somehow ‘Twister’ stays as uptempo and exuberant as a roller-coaster ride, neatly avoiding the idea of real danger.”This week, “Twisters,” a sequel to “Twister,” directed by Lee Isaac Chung, arrived in theaters. I didn’t have a deep-rooted relationship with the original film, but, fresh off my positive viewing experience, I didn’t feel like I needed another chapter. Why can’t we just make one good thing and then make another new thing that’s also good?

A Trip Into Tornado Alley With America’s Most Obsessive Storm ChaserOn a clear morning in late May, Reed Timmer began the day at home in Lexington, Okla., studying the latest update from the National Weather Service’s storm-prediction center. A month into his freshman year, he went storm chasing, and saw his first tornado. He went on to begin his Ph.D. studies, but the allure of storm chasing waylaid his academic career. Timmer insists that chasing tornadoes is safe, though others’ experience suggests a different conclusion. In 2013, while he was pursuing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, four other chasers died in the storm.

My name is Lee Isaac Chung and I am the director of “Twisters.” So this is a scene that happens about halfway through the film. Other interesting actors in this sequence, we have James Paxton, who is actually the son of Bill Paxton. So any time we’re filming inside of this swimming pool, there were people outside, our crew, who were destroying the set. The swimming pool had actually never been there. We had found this motel in which there were three separate structures within the motel.

Sean Waugh holds a laptop with green, red and yellow weather radar looping as his driver rumbles down an Oklahoma highway in their government-issued truck. A rectangular cage with metal mesh covers the truck in an attempt to protect the team from hail. Hanging off the front of the hail cage are weather instruments that look like the horn of a rhinoceros charging into a storm. The truck, called Probe One, points in one direction, and a companion, Probe Two, points in another. “Probe One, you want us to go?”“Yes, go now,” says Dr. Waugh, a researcher with the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

Warner Bros./Everett CollectionSafety and science matterFor starters, experts hope safety will be emphasized amid all the gasp-inducing (and very windy) set-pieces. “This could potentially create more dangerous conditions in the climate of storm chasing,” she said of the new movie. I first saw the trailer for “Twisters” — which opens in theaters on Friday — in May at a movie theater in Houston, where I live. “You ride ’em.”Yee-haw, I thought in the theater, as I wondered if my air-conditioning at home was back on. Last week, another powerful storm battered Houston, as Hurricane Beryl had a brief but eventful landfall on the South Texas coast. A blockbuster romp like “Twisters” is a safe and sanitized way to experience a natural disaster: as a fantasy. CNN —Like its titular tornados, “Twisters” blasts through a lot in its 122-minute runtime. Generally, scientists are the least certain about the connection between tornadoes and climate change as it’s unclear how warming temperatures are changing storms themselves or the outbreaks. Cathy, a local farmer, gripes that storms and floods are becoming more frequent, and the price of wheat more expensive, while stopping short of citing climate change. However, for a film populated by scientists and clued-in citizens to not mention climate change is a little like the twisters themselves: there’s a hole at the center. !”“Making a ‘Twisters’ movie in Tornado Alley during storm season, tornado season, it’s kind of perfect.
