Gold, traditionally perceived as a haven, has climbed roughly 30% this year, outperforming the benchmark S&P 500 index’s 20% gain. Fresh consumer confidence data on Tuesday indicated that Americans are feeling pessimistic about the US economy and future of the job market. JPMorgan Chase researchers said in a note on Monday that they expect the yellow metal to continue running toward their 2025 target price of $2,850 an ounce as the Fed brings down rates. Silver, another precious metal that tends to move in tandem with gold, has jumped roughly 34% this year, outperforming the yellow metal. New moves from China to revive its economy also has the potential to lift precious metals, said Rhind.

Musk has previously complied with content moderation requests from other governments, including the increasingly authoritarian nations of Turkey and India. In 2023, he indicated he would abide by the European Union's rulebook on content moderation, known as the Digital Services Act, Politico reported. Alon-Beck told BI that, in countries like France with strict laws around content moderation, Musk is no different than Durov, and she would expect he could be arrested if he continues to push the boundaries of local content moderation laws. Read previewEarlier this month, a spokesperson for Turkey's ruling AK Party said that a process was "underway" for Turkey to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations. He now appears to be seeking to maintain what experts have dubbed a "balancing act" between its relations with the West, Russia, and China. "Even if Turkey does join BRICS, I do not believe it is going to lead to a fundamental redefinition of Turkey's relationship with the West." Advertisement"Understanding and collaborating with Turkey's perspective can enhance US and NATO relations with Turkey, irrespective of potential administrative changes in Ankara," Can wrote in an article for the Wilson Center. For its part, the US has remained relatively quiet following the news that Turkey's BRICS ambitions may be inching forward, which Aydintaşbaş said was likely a savvy move aimed at avoiding a public dispute.

These regional powers are betting they can build an expendable air force without the massive costs of aircraft carriers, fighter jets and pilots trained to fly them. Naval experts agree that drone ships represent new possibilities while pointing out that these ships fall far short of the aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships that top navies sail. Turkey developed the Bayraktar TB3 naval drone for the Anadolu and claims the unmanned Kizilelma fighter jet it is developing could also operate from it. Although far from the might and versatility of flattops, these vessels enhance Turkey and Iran's respective capabilities to project naval power. These drone-carriers also have inherent shortcomings when compared to aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships in other navies.

A panel of Brazil's federal supreme court justices voted unanimously to uphold orders suspending the use of Elon Musk's social network X nationwide. X had earlier defied court requests to take down accounts or posts that it said violated Brazil's laws on political misinformation and hate speech online. The court also froze the financial assets of another Musk-led business, satellite internet service Starlink, in Brazil to ensure his social network would pay its fines. Brazil's telecoms regulator Anatel instructed internet service providers including Starlink to block access to X in the country until it complies with the court orders. Shein reveals child labor cases at its suppliers
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Fast fashion retailer Shein found two cases of child labor at its suppliers last year, it said in its 2023 sustainability report, as it stepped up audits of manufacturers in China to assuage criticisms of its low-cost business model ahead of a planned flotation. Shein tightened its supplier policy last October after the child labor cases were found, so that any severe breaches — called “Immediate Termination Violations” — would result in ending the relationship with the supplier immediately. Previously, suppliers such as those that employed minors had 30 days to resolve the issue, failing which Shein would cut ties. That violation was found in 1.8% of supplier audits in 2021, 0.3% of audits in 2022, and 0.1% in 2023. “We remain vigilant in guarding against such violations going forward, and in line with current policies, will terminate any noncompliant suppliers,” Shein said in the report.
