Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

While pregnant, I read up on parenting styles and came across an ultramodern movement called "gentle parenting." Gentle parenting worked when my child was littleGentle parenting was relatively easy during early motherhood. Even when I followed the gentle parenting scripts laid out by gurus, everything felt like an ongoing tug of war. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that gentle parenting is way too gentle. In all honesty, drifting away from gentle parenting made me realize that parenting is more about trusting your gut than following scripts and best practices.

The leaders of the G7 had plenty to discuss — and disagree about — at their annual meeting in Italy. And then there was abortion rights. Several officials say the debate centered on a request by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy not to include the words “abortion” and “reproductive rights” in the statement. The Italian government has denied that it intended to backtrack on the commitment to protecting access to safe abortions. When told of Ms. Meloni’s position, American officials say, President Biden pushed back, wanting an explicit reference to reproductive rights and at least a reaffirmation of support for abortion rights from last year’s communiqué.
