However, it was an observational study and, as such, can only establish a link rather than cause and effect: we can’t know for sure if irregular sleep patterns caused the increased risk. But even those irregular sleepers who got the recommended amount of sleep had a higher risk of suffering a major cardiovascular event.

A California man was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after he allegedly tried to check two suitcases filled with clothing soaked in methamphetamine, including a cow pajama onesie, federal prosecutors announced Tuesday. Blake Snell has agreed to a $182 million, five-year contract with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The two-time Cy Young Award winner broke the news personally by posting a photo of himself on social media in a Dodgers uniform — No. Snell would join two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in a star-studded rotation, giving the Dodgers the first mega deal of this offseason following Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract last winter. Snell’s $36.4 million average salary would rank as the fifth-highest among active deals next year behind Ohtani ($70 million), Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler ($42 million), New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge ($40 million) and Texas pitcher Jacob deGrom ($37 million). Prosecution of an 86-year-old white man charged in the wrong-door injury shooting of a Black teenager in Kansas City, Missouri, last year will move forward, a judge indicated Tuesday. Cleo Nagbe, mother of Ralph Yarl, said the teen's family is pleased the case remained on schedule. “The family of Ralph Yarl is grateful that the trial against Andrew Lester is moving forward,” she said in a statement sent to NBC affiliate KSHB of Kansas City, Missouri. After the shooting, Yarl sought help from the residents of neighboring homes, his family's lawyers said, and was eventually hospitalized. If Lester is successfully prosecuted on the assault charge, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

After a lengthy delay, President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has signed a memorandum of understanding with the White House, allowing the next administration to coordinate with federal agencies. Trump’s incoming White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles said in a statement the memo’s signing allows for “critical preparations” to begin. During the campaign, Trump's team had blown past an Oct. 1 deadline to enter a memorandum of understanding with the White House. The agreement with the White House outlined that Trump must publicly post his ethics plan for the transition team on the GSA website. The Trump transition team and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday evening.

An appeals court on Tuesday agreed to dismiss charges related to Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, effectively ending Special Counsel Jack Smith's prosecution of Trump. A spokesperson for Smith’s office declined to comment. Federal prosecutors in August had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit to restore the case. The two remaining criminal cases, the New York case involving hush money payments and a Georgia election interference case, are also in limbo. A New York judge ruled last week postponed Trump's sentencing in that case which was previously scheduled for Nov. 26.
