CNN —Six-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez will end his 11-year association with Honda, the factory team announced Wednesday, finally ending weeks of speculation around the rider’s future. “Honda Racing Corporation and Marc Márquez have mutually elected to terminate their four-year contract prematurely at the end of the 2023 MotoGP World Championship season,” HRC announced in a statement. In an emotional social media post following Honda’s announcement, Márquez shared what he said was a message to one of his team. “I don’t know where to begin. I don’t know if I’m doing right or wrong, I don’t know what will happen in the future, I don’t know if all this will turn out well, but what I do know is everything we have achieved together,” the post read.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have placed receiver Cooper Kupp on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least their first four games. The Rams also put new tight end Hunter Long on injured reserve Saturday, one day before their season opener at Seattle. Kupp injured his hamstring Aug. 1 in training camp, and he aggravated the injury late last month. Rypien will be the backup to Matthew Stafford in the absence of Stetson Bennett, who wasn't put on injured reserve despite a shoulder problem likely to prevent him from suiting up in Seattle.

But having to carry a newborn along with them didn’t slow this hiking family down at all. ELMONT, NEW YORK - JUNE 10: Arcangelo with Javier Castellano up wins the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 10, 2023 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)Horses died in consecutive races at Belmont Park, dealing more untimely blows to the beleaguered sport which had little time to celebrate of its most uplifting events of the year. "Two dead Thoroughbreds in two days with the same trainer on the same track means one thing: Belmont Park is failing to protect horses," PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo said in a statement. Including Mashnee Girl and Excursionniste, four horses have died during races at Belmont Park's spring/summer meet, which began on May 4 and has encompassed 1,670 horses starting in 214 races, according to McKenna. Saturday's Belmont Stakes capped a tumultuous five weeks of racing that normally shines a bright light on the sport of kings.

CNN —Arcangelo won the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes in New York, a historic win that marked the first time a female horse trainer won the race. With Arcangelo’s Saturday victory, Jena Antonucci became the first female trainer in history to train a Belmont winner. Preakness Stakes winner National Treasure led for most of the race, before Arcangelo made a late push inside to capture the historic victory. Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano tallied his first victory at the Belmont. The odds for Arcangelo to win the race were 7-1 as of Saturday morning, according to the Belmont’s official website.

Finally, a happy ending to a fraught Triple Crown. Arcangelo thundered down the stretch of the Belmont Stakes to win the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes by a length and a half and made a little history: His trainer, Jena Antonucci, became the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race, a series that spans more than a century. The colt held off a late run by Forte and gave his jockey, Javier Castellano, his first Belmont victory. Castellano, a Hall of Famer, won his first Kentucky Derby five weeks ago aboard Mage. Arcangelo is a 3-year-old ridgeling who cost owner Jon Ebbert of Blue Rose Farm $35,000 as a yearling.

CNN —This year’s Belmont Stakes is under threat as wildfire smoke originating from Canada continues to spread across the US. The New York Racing Association (NYRA) postponed Thursday’s schedule at Belmont Park and said racing would only be authorised if conditions improved. Parts of the East Coast are expected to continue to suffer poor air quality until at least the weekend. How to watchThe Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Mandatory Credit: Michael Clevenger and Christopher Granger-USA TODAY SportsJune 1 (Reuters) - Churchill Downs Racetrack unveiled a number of safety initiatives and precautionary measures on Thursday following a recent series of horse deaths at the home of the Kentucky Derby. In addition, the number of starts per horse during a rolling eight-week period will be restricted to four. At the summit, the Churchill Downs, Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and HISA veterinary teams reviewed all veterinary information available in the hope of better understanding the events surrounding the recent fatalities. Since the Churchill Downs stable reopened for training on March 30, there have been 12 equine fatalities at Churchill Downs, which the racetrack previously described as a "highly unusual statistic."

[1/4] American Mountaineer Garrett Madison who climbed Everest for the 13th time, speaks during an interview with Reuters in Kathmandu, Nepal May 30, 2023. "We need to find better ways to bring the waste down," Madison said in the Nepali capital Kathmandu after returning from the mountain. "We need better policing to check that every team brings down its garbage." Mountain climbing generates big income for Nepal, which issued a record 478 permits for Everest this March to May season, each costing $11,000. While hundreds of people climbed the mountain this season, 12 of them died and five were missing on its slopes.
KATHMANDU, May 26 (Reuters) - A renowned U.S. mountain guide has achieved the rare Mount Everest region "triple crown" of climbing the Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse peaks in one season, a hiking firm said on Friday, as the season's death toll on the world's highest mountain hit 12. Madison, who owns the company Madison Mountaineering based in Seattle, climbed the smaller but technically difficult Nuptse peak, at 7,855 metres (25,770 feet), on May 8. British climber Kenton Cool, who climbed the triple crown in 2013, said Garrett was an "unflappable expedition leader" who quietly goes about his job. Cool, 49, last week set a new record of 17 summits of Everest, the world's highest peak, by a foreign climber. A Nepali, Kami Rita Sherpa, this week climbed Everest for a 28th time, the most by any mountaineer.
The death on Saturday added to the recent toll of horse fatalities surrounding the Triple Crown races, after seven horses died at Churchill Downs in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby earlier this month. His colt National Treasure is a 3-1 morning line choice in the Preakness and could provide the stiffest challenge to Mage, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner. Baffert was suspended after Medina Spirit failed a drug test after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Last year, Baffert was serving his Kentucky suspension during the Triple Crown, so the racing commissions in Maryland and New York kept him from the Preakness and the Belmont. After the seven deaths at Churchill Downs ahead of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes officials were taking a cautious approach to pre-race examinations.
National Treasure, with jockey John Velazquez, edges out Blazing Sevens, with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., to win the148th running of the Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Saturday, May 20, 2023, in Baltimore. National Treasure won the Preakness on Saturday in Baffert's return to the Triple Crown trail following a suspension, but it came hours after another 3-year-old colt, Havnameltdown, was put down because of a left leg injury in an undercard race. His defeat, caused by a pace much slower than the Derby, means there will not be a Triple Crown winner for a fifth consecutive year. The thrill of victories by National Treasure in the Preakness and Arabian Lion in an earlier stakes race contrasted with the agony of Havnameltdown's death. Medina Spirit was Baffert's most recent Preakness horse, finishing third.

Another challenge for the Delgados when they came to the United States was finding good horses and owners who believed in them. They liked that the horse was a near replica of his sire, Good Magic, who finished second in the Derby and fourth in the Preakness. And so that melting pot of a group rode Mage straight into the winner’s circle on the first Saturday in May, leading to perhaps the biggest winner’s circle party in Derby history — even Mage looked small in the middle of it. About 70 of the 382 people who invested in Mage through Commonwealth were there. When her wheelchair got stuck on the track, Gerardo Corrales and Jose Ortiz, who had just rode in the Derby, carried her the rest of the way.
Havnameltdown stumbled and dropped Saez as he approached the stretch and sustained a "non-operable left fore fetlock injury" that led to the decision to euthanize the 3-year-old colt, 1ST Racing, which operates Pimlico Race Course, said in a statement. 1ST Racing also said Saez, who was transported to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for further evaluation, is stable and conscious. I feel so bad for that horse, and I just hope that Luis is ok," said Baffert. CNN —One of the horses scheduled to run before today’s Preakness Stakes, the Bob Baffert-trained Havnameltdown, has been euthanized, after suffering a serious injury in an undercard race this afternoon, officials said. How to watchThe Preakness Stakes will take place on Saturday at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Julio Cortez/APThe controversy started after Medina Spirit, who died in December 2021, won the Kentucky Derby two years ago. After the race, Baffert revealed that the horse had tested positive for elevated levels of betamethasone. In February 2022, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced its decision to disqualify Medina Spirit.
CNN —National Treasure won the 2023 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore Saturday evening. The win made Baffert the winningest trainer in Preakness Stakes history and the only trainer to have eight horses win the race. Blazing Sevens placed second, and prerace favorite and Kentucky Derby winner Mage placed third in the seven-horse field. The win means no horse will take home the coveted Triple Crown this year, achieved when a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in one year. National Treasure was ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who tallied his first win at the Preakness Stakes.

Mage, ridden by Javier Castellano, executed a frantic stretch run to capture an unpredictable Kentucky Derby that saw five contenders, including the favorite, scratched ahead of the race. Now, in only his fifth race, Mage moves on to Baltimore and the 148th Preakness Stakes, where he will be a Triple Crown contender and the only Derby horse in what is considered a weak field. First Mission, considered to be his biggest challenger, was scratched on Friday morning with a left hind ankle injury. Below, the Preakness horses are listed in order of post position, with comments by Joe Drape and Melissa Hoppert of The New York Times. The morning-line odds, set by Keith Feustle of Pimlico Race Course, were revised to reflect the scratch.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Horse racing’s Triple Crown season will move on to the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore later this month after Mage’s win in the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. But racing officials here will be faced with sorting out what went wrong during a Derby week in which a string of horse fatalities put a damper on the sport’s most prominent event. Seven horse deaths have been reported at Churchill Downs since April 27, including two on Saturday in the hours before the Kentucky Derby. The run of tragedies again brings safety issues to the fore in racing, a sport in which a maze of state-by-state regulation, in the absence of an empowered national regulator, has made it difficult to impose reforms.
