CNN —A blast of severe winter weather last week caused thousands of Southwest Airlines flight cancellations and spiraled into a complete meltdown of its flight system. In October 2021, Southwest canceled more than 2,000 flights over a four-day period. While the airline blamed the crisis partly on bad weather in Florida, Southwest canceled flights for far longer than its competitors. Southwest’s scheduling system hasn’t changed much since the 1990s, according to Captain Casey Murray, president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association. But Southwest has consistently failed to perform as well as its competitors when it comes to cancellations, according to bureau data.
More than 3,000 flights were canceled early Friday as a bitter winter storm engulfed parts of the US. Disruptions are set to continue, the National Weather Service warned. The National Weather Service said early Friday that the US would experience a "historic winter storm" with more than 240 million people under winter weather warnings or advisories. Around a third of the flights to and from Denver International Airport were canceled and around a quarter to and from Chicago O'Hare International Airport were canceled, FlightAware data shows. Other airports, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Reagan National Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, had a large proportion of their flights delayed, although fewer than 10% were canceled.
U.S. distillate fuel oil stocks increased by six million barrels over the seven days ending on Dec. 2, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Distillate inventories have risen by a total of 13 million barrels over the eight weeks since Oct. 7 (“Weekly petroleum status report”, EIA, Dec. 7). Distillate inventories have accumulated at a time of year when they would normally be depleting, a signal the market balance has shifted decisively. Stocks depleted by an average of six million barrels over the same period in the ten years before the COVID-19 pandemic. Net distillate exports have slowed to around 1.0 million bpd from 1.4 million bpd in September, implying foreign consumption also slackened.

The SmartAsset survey reported the average fare and percent change in ticket prices at 100 U.S. airports over the past year. It first rounded up the 100 busiest U.S. airports based on the number of domestic travelers in 2021. The national average increased 21%. These are the 10 most expensive airports to fly out of in the U.S., according to SmartAsset.
New York (CNN Business) The US economy can keep running without freight trains — but not for long. But a rail strike could send prices shooting higher again due to limited supplies. The National Retail Federation said last week it is concerned about shortages later this year if there is a rail strike. A rail strike would "devastate the movement of manufactured products that families depend on." CommutingAlthough only the nation's freight rail lines face a pending strike, many of the nation's commuter trains travel on tracks maintained and operated by the freight railroads.
