Deodorant, shampoo and underwear are all under lock and key in many stores in California. Retail clerks are often told to ignore shoplifters, after a handful of store employees who confronted thieves were assaulted or killed. Video clips of smash-and-grab crews snatching armloads of merchandise have gone viral. Californians of all political stripes have become fed up with the problems plaguing supermarkets and retail stores, not to mention car break-ins and open-air drug use. Now the state’s lawmakers and voters are weighing what to do.

I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. Although Harris said that she is determined to defeat former President Donald Trump and "his extreme Project 2025 agenda," Trump himself has called the project "ridiculous." Kamala HQ instead posted a Venn diagram, with the two outer circles, "Biden HQ" and "Kamala HQ" merging to form "holding Trump accountable." Across the social media landscape, the energy is palpable, said David Karpf, a professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University. "When you've got a good social media team that has arrived at a cultural moment and pent-up enthusiasm, they get to play with it." While Harris' team is focusing on younger voters and voters of color, the appeal of social media transcends age, North said.

The Democrats had been headed for a "landslide defeat" in November, but now, they stand a chance, said Ian Bremmer, President and Founder of Eurasia Group. "They've turned [this race] around, and President Biden has given the Democrats a fighting chance," he told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Monday. How Harris helps DemocratsAccording to experts that spoke to CNBC, Harris comes with a number of advantages in comparison to her former running mate. A recent poll showed that some 85% of the population believed Biden was too old to serve another four years. However, according to Myers, the race has been thrown into "complete disarray" with Harris set to give Trump a "real run for his money."

CNN —President Joe Biden ran for reelection to save democracy. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a letter he posted to X on Sunday afternoon. His struggles validated concerns of majorities of voters that he would be too old for a second term that would have ended when he is 86. But in the end, Biden could not find a way to make voters unsee the poignant picture of an 81-year-old commander in chief who appeared to have seriously declined and was stumbling in the debate. Years earlier, in March 1952, Harry S. Truman, another Democratic president, had decided not to seek his own second term.

Powerful leaders of the Democratic establishment quickly embraced Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday after President Biden’s shocking exit from the race, hoping that a seamless succession could end a month of damaging chaos and transform a contest widely believed to be tipping toward Republicans. With breathtaking speed, she took control of Mr. Biden’s enormous political operation and contacted Democratic leaders in Congress and state houses to ask for their support. The Biden campaign formally renamed itself “Harris for President,” giving her immediate access to an account that had $96 million in cash at the end of June. On an internal call, the Biden campaign’s leaders told staff members that they would now work for Ms. Harris. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Ms. Harris said in a statement.

Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. 2024 at a Crossroads

The 2024 presidential race hurtled toward a consequential crossroads on Thursday, as top Democrats ratcheted up pressure to deny President Biden his party’s nomination while bullish Republicans prepared for a balloon drop to formally select a bandaged Donald J. Trump as their standard-bearer. An extraordinary three weeks in American politics took another surprise turn, after the White House announced on Wednesday that Mr. Biden had contracted Covid, forcing the president into physical isolation just as his presidential candidacy hung in the balance. A race that not long ago seemed a staid rematch came to a dramatic pivot point after a head-spinning series of events: a disastrous debate late last month that made longstanding questions about Mr. Biden’s age unavoidable, and then a shocking attempted assassination of Mr. Trump less than 48 hours before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. For a fleeting few hours on Wednesday, the two presidents presented starkly dueling images that fed into the very story line Republicans were unspooling at their convention — that Mr. Trump was strong and Mr. Biden was weak. One was flying to his beach house on Air Force One to enter seclusion as his party fractured around him; the other was welcomed as a wounded hero by thousands of cheering supporters, some of whom bandaged their ears in a show of solidarity.

Ahead of those meetings, defections in Biden’s Democratic coalition in Congress continued. More than a dozen Democratic House members and at least one Democratic senator have publicly called on Biden to withdraw from his reelection campaign. Speaking with reporters on Friday, Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler acknowledged “anxiety” from Capitol Hill, but insisted Biden will continue outreach to lawmakers to shore up his support. Biden, for his part, came off as chastened during the news conference and was less defiant than in previous appearances. Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, has bluntly acknowledged the challenges it has faced since his debate performance two weeks ago.
