Christopher Nolan's new film 'Oppenheimer' features complex science. Science advisors on his latest film, "Oppenheimer," told Insider that's because he teaches himself the science before he even sits down to write. Thorne, who attended lectures by the real J. Robert Oppenheimer while studying at Princeton, has first-hand knowledge about Oppenheimer the man, not just his science. So he said that he clarified and expanded on some of the interactions these famous men would have had with one another for Nolan's film. Oppenheimer was an expert in quantum physics, and was responsible for bringing the discipline to the US, Thorne said.

Cillian Murphy plays the "father of the atomic bomb", J. Robert Oppenheimer, in the new film. Science advisors said Murphy asked questions about the theories to accurately portray his character. For his part, Thorne met Murphy virtually and talked with him about scientific theory broadly, and Oppenheimer the man, whom Thorne studied under at Princeton, personally. Saltzberg met Murphy while working with production designers to draft the equations written on the chalkboards throughout the movie. For his role as a physicist in the 2007 movie "Sunshine", Murphy met with scientists at CERN to prepare for the role.

CNN —Soccer players at the 2023 Women’s World Cup will on average earn just 25 cents for every dollar earned by men at their World Cup last year, a new CNN analysis found. In addition to prize money, FIFA committed to paying $42 million to the federations and players’ clubs for Women’s World Cup preparations. Havana Solaun (R) and Jamaica are appearing at their second ever Women's World Cup. But for the players, equal pay encompasses more than simply closing this gap to the salaries enjoyed by male footballers. June 2023 A record $110 million prize pot negotiated for the Women’s World Cup, at least $30,000 guaranteed for every player.

Those ripples are probably the distant thunder of countless collisions between supermassive black holes, throughout space and time. He predicted that the intense gravity of extremely massive objects, like black holes, warps the fabric of space-time. The NSF funded the 15-year experiment, which is called the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). Supermassive black holes are thought to exist at the center of every galaxy. Her lab runs computer models of merging supermassive black holes to predict how they behave and what signals they send out into space.

“The classicist who wants to be modern, meeting the modernist who wants to be classical.” So says Elizabeth Taylor, summing up the fractious encounter between the revered Shakespearian actor John Gielgud, and her new husband, the actor Richard Burton. It’s 1964, Taylor and Burton are the most famous couple in the world, and Burton is rehearsing the role of Hamlet for a Broadway production that Gielgud is directing. It’s not going well. That’s the setting for “The Motive and the Cue,” a new play directed by Sam Mendes, written by Jack Thorne, and starring Mark Gatiss as Gielgud, Johnny Flynn as Burton and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor. The play, which opened to enthusiastic reviews in May and runs through July 15 at the National Theater, in London, was an idea born out of the pandemic, said Caro Newling, a co-founder with Mendes of Neal Street Productions, which developed the show.

As the royals don’t leave their chamber, workers give them regurgitated food from their own mouths. Other colony-living insects spike their mouth-to-mouth meals with chemicals for communication, Dr. Vargo said. The termite king, performing his marital duties, helps his mate produce as many as 15,000 eggs each day. “The reproductive throne is inherited by one or more of their offspring,” Dr. Thorne said. “Termites are amazing, and super important in their native habitats for decomposition and recycling of nutrients,” Dr. Thorne said.
There’s something courageous in her; she’s not going to walk into a space unprepared. There was a tender day on set [for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” filmed after Chadwick Boseman, the franchise’s original star, died in 2020] when we connected deeply. ], I was distraught about how terribly African women were portrayed in the West, if they ever were. The joy for me is to see Black women from around the world getting our stories told: Letitia [Wright, another “Black Panther” actor] is Guyanese British, and she had to learn a ton of Shona when she was the lead in my play at the Young Vic [“The Convert,” 2018-19, in London]. To have her doing our accents and intonations beautifully was like seeing the diaspora embracing itself.
A new "Stranger Things" stage spinoff is coming to London's West End later this year, Netflix announced Wednesday. "Stranger Things: The First Shadow," an adaptation of the popular science fiction series, will premiere at the Phoenix Theatre as the streaming giant's first live stage production. Thorne also wrote the stage play for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." The "Stranger Things" series debuted in 2016 and has been one of the streaming platform's most popular shows. Tickets for "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" are expected to go on sale in the spring.

Brendon Thorne | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe head of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) reiterated on Wednesday that interest rates had not peaked, adding that he was unsure how high they had to go as the central bank, seeking to control inflation, tried to follow a narrow path to a soft landing. When asked about how far interest rates would have to rise, he said policymakers had an open mind. There is a risk that we have not yet done enough with interest rates and spending is more resilient and that inflation stays high." Markets see higher peakThe RBA most recently implemented an interest rates rise on Feb. 7 and said more would come.

"Indian iron ore exports … have really come off in the last few months. India's exports of iron ore plunged by 90% year on year in October last year, and recorded an year-on-year decline as steep as 96% in September. Udit Kulshrestha | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesAccording to Refinitiv, around 60% of global iron ore exports are destined for China. Iron ore exports from India were affected by a 50% tax on low-grade iron ore exports, which was reversed in late November. India's iron ore exports won't be the biggest factor in price volatility, however.
In the six years since then, she has become an icon of the left and a champion for women in public life, bringing a compassionate and authoritative energy to the hypermasculine realm of world politics. Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand's prime minister, during a news conference in Sydney in June. Data released last year to New Zealand’s Newshub media outlet showed police recorded 18 threats to the prime minister in 2019, 32 in 2020 and 50 in 2021. If that person receives more than two-thirds of caucus support, Ardern said, she will resign soon after and the new leader will be sworn in as prime minister. Ardern said she plans to remain in Parliament until April, avoiding the need for a snap vote in her suburban Auckland electorate.

Egyptians may not have used mummification to preserve the body at all, some scientists say. Their aim may have been to turn royal remains into godly statues — preservation was a perk, they say. Instead, the experts say, Egyptians intended to turn their pharaohs into statues, works of art with religious significance. The approach is explored in the upcoming "Golden Mummies of Egypt" exhibition, which opens at the Manchester Museum in February. Colorado Springs, a mostly conservative city of about half a million people, sits about 70 miles south from the more progressive Denver. Poet James Davis "proudly named [the book] after a gay bar in Colorado Springs," according to his website. In the poem entitled "Club Q," Davis describes the emotion and the feeling of finally belonging in a place. “Club Q is in shock, and in deep mourning, with the family and friends who had loved ones senselessly taken from them. Mother identifies son as Club Q shooting victim: 'It's just a nightmare’ Nov. 21, 2022 00:54 Aston, a transgender man who worked at Club Q as a bartender, was one of the five people killed at the venue on Saturday.
A stunning tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” begins with the death of his character, T’Challa. While the trauma of the Talokans has bonded them together as a people, Shuri’s grief and rage have fueled self-isolation. Shuri also dismisses the Black Panther as a relic of the past. T’Challa’s death and Shuri’s anguished-filled reaction to the devastating loss, among others, are the catalysts upon which “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” hinges. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” doesn’t ask Shuri, Namor or the audience to push past their anger and grief — it’s a constant in this film.
The sequel to Netflix’s hit feature film “Enola Holmes” may not have the cleverest title, but “Enola Holmes 2” is just as quick-witted and charming as the original. A quirky take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mysteries, Enola is more than ready for another adorable, all-ages romp. Springer’s books, and the films, invent a female character that Doyle never conceived of, and put her front and center. “Sherlock Holmes” is one of the most adapted mysteries series in history. Hopefully the success of the “Enola Holmes” franchise encourages them to make more.
CNN —The game is afoot (again) in “Enola Holmes 2,” a wonderful showcase for Millie Bobby Brown that this time manages to work the character’s famous brother, Sherlock, more organically into the mix. “Enola Holmes 2” contains a considerable amount of action – a bit too much, frankly, given the more cerebral aspects of the character. Sherlock Holmes has gone through numerous iterations through the years, evidence of the character’s durability while underscoring how difficult it is to bring much new to Baker Street. Either way, the roots of the main character’s name notwithstanding, it’s unlikely Netflix will want to leave Enola alone for long. “Enola Holmes 2” premieres November 4 on Netflix.
Disney and Marvel Studios finally unveiled Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” at the film’s world premiere in Hollywood on Wednesday evening. Anticipation for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has been sky high. “Black Panther” also became the first comic book movie nominated for best picture at the Oscars. The Hollywood Reporter’s Brian Davids hailed the film as “Marvel’s most poignant and powerful film to date,” praising all elements from the performances to the crafts. The Wrap’s Drew Taylor said that the film “prioritizes sentiment over spectacle” and praised Ludwig Göransson’s score as “an all timer.”“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" opens in theaters nationwide Nov. 11.
According to Australia's Bureau of Statistics, Australia's inflation rate rose to 6.1 in June, a 21-year high. Australia's unemployment rate stood at 3.5% in August, and household savings ratio fell to 8.7% in the March to June quarter. Additionally, a small share of borrowers with high debt and low savings are "vulnerable" to payment difficulties. In addition, Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones cautioned that Australia's economy is not "hermetically sealed" from the forecasted downturn of the international economy, Sky news reported. This will in turn have an impact on Australia's growth forecast.
