The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes. The ICC accused Netanyahu and Gallant of a string of human rights abuses in the Gaza Strip, where local health officials said the death toll from the Israeli military's yearlong assault on the Palestinian enclave had now passed 44,000. Both Israel and the United States do not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC, which has no police to enforce its warrants. But the warrants do put the Israeli officials at risk of arrest in other countries, including much of Europe. An Alabama inmate convicted in a 1994 murder is poised to die Thursday in the state's third nitrogen hypoxia execution this year. Carey Dale Grayson asked to have his execution carried out by nitrogen gas. An American citizen has died at a popular adventure spot in Laos where alcohol tainted with methanol has been blamed for a spate of poisonings in recent days. President-elect Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell could be on a policy collision course in 2025 depending on how economic circumstances play out. That in turn could infuriate Trump, who lashed Fed officials including Powell during his first term in office for not relaxing monetary policy quickly enough. Though Powell became Fed chair in 2018, after Trump nominated him for the position, the two clashed often about the direction of interest rates. Should the results start to show up in the data, the Powell Fed may be tempted to hold tougher on monetary policy against inflation. "They're going to look at a very nontraditional approach to policy that Trump is bringing forward but put it through a very traditional economic lens," he said.

CNN —Social Security is by far one of the most popular government programs in the United States because it is critical for so many retirees’ financial security. More than half of non-retired US adults (53%) overall said they expect they will need to use Social Security to pay for necessary expenses, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Social Security benefits only replace a portion of Americans’ pre-retirement income. Indeed, only 31% of the non-retired adults surveyed said they are not planning to rely on Social Security benefits in retirement, with just 14% saying they will “not (be) at all” reliant on them. Their “normal retirement age” is 67 for the purposes of collecting Social Security benefits.
