CNN —Basketball star Brittney Griner was honored Friday with the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award – an honor bestowed on the Phoenix Mercury center for her off-the-court volunteer work. Griner, who the US State Department deemed wrongfully detained, was released last December in a prisoner swap that involved Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. Griner has spent all of her WNBA seasons with the Mercury, winning a championship in 2014. The new portals, equipped with high-speed cameras, will take hundreds of pictures of every passing locomotive and rail car. Unlike previous versions, these new inspection portals will be able to capture all sides of a train that passes through them with well-lit images. University of Delaware professor Allan Zarembski, who leads the Railroad Engineering and Safety Program there, said it's significant that Norfolk Southern is investing in so many of the portals. The Atlanta-based railroad didn't say how much it is investing in the technology it worked with Georgia Tech to develop. That crash put the spotlight on railroad safety nationwide and prompted calls for reforms.

That same year, Amazon unsuccessfully sought to get her recused from agency probes against the company, arguing she was too biased. The District of Columbia also tried to sue Amazon on antitrust grounds before, but its lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge last year. Experts say the FTC faces a few hurdles in its own case, including convincing the court which slice of the market Amazon is allegedly monopolizing. In a blog post responding to the lawsuit, Amazon General Counsel David Zapolsky accused the FTC of attempting to “gerrymander alleged market” to portray Amazon as something it’s not. The FTC also alleges Amazon keeps sellers dependent on services that have allowed it to collect billions in revenue every year.

The eye-popping numbers are part of a longer-term shift toward private college housing. Moody's Analytics recently warned of an "affordability crisis" for college students, noting that since 2019, rents for student housing in a sample of notable college towns had grown faster than those of regular apartments. Student housing goes privateThe gold rush in student housing is a relatively new phenomenon. Back in the 1980s and '90s, most college students either lived in bland, cinder-block-walled dorms or in conventional apartments farther from campus. Even with his frugality, he came to realize that the prices in West Campus were "impossible to rationalize" for a college student.

New York CNN —Now that the United Auto Workers union has started a strike, the US auto market is about to be thrown into turmoil all over again. Auto sales hadn’t entirely recovered from the pandemic, but car shopping in the United States could change once more. The auto manufacturing crises of recent years have left auto dealers better prepared to deal with disruptions, said Scott Kunes, chief operating officer of Kunes Auto and RV Group, which owns more than 40 dealerships in the Midwest. It pays to be flexibleBefore the strikes started, auto dealerships had reasonably healthy inventories of new vehicles, according to Michelle Krebs, an analyst with AutoTrader. That means they’ll still have vehicles to sell for a few weeks, but, as the strike wears on, the choices available will start to dwindle.

CNN —If you’re thinking about buying a new car, you might be warily watching news about a possible United Auto Workers strike. It depends on the vehicle you’re shopping for and on your own level of flexibility in that choice. New vehicle inventories are leaner than they’ve been before past strikes, said Pat Ryan, CEO of the car shopping site CoPilot, which closely tracks dealership inventories. So vehicle production at Mexican and Canadian factories could well shut down at some point if a strike drags on. In some ways, you might find this all somewhat similar to car shopping during the era of post-covid vehicle shortages, said Ryan.

What your poop color can say about your health
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
When bilirubin and bile are secreted in the small intestine during digestion, they ultimately turn the poop brown. This physiological process is also the reason why green is the second most common poop color. Eating a lot of tomato juice, beets or red gelatin or drinking a lot of energy drinks with red dyes could make poop red, Corkins said. Usually, gastroenterologists think blood in poop is coming from lower in the colon or rectum because poop red from blood would indicate the blood hasn’t yet had time to change color. Red poop unassociated with anything you recently consumed may also come with stomach pain or fatigue.

What passing gas can say about your health
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
“There are two sources of ‘gas,’ and not all gas is gas. Passing gas “between maybe five and 15 times per day … is totally normal,” said Dr. William Chey, the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. Gas isn’t as much of an indicator of gut health as bowel movement frequency and texture. But dietary choices can lead to more or less gas, and there are certain points at which gas is worth mentioning to a doctor. The reason for that is, if things move very slowly through the GI tract, they have more time to interact with the bacteria in the GI tract, particularly the colon.

CHICAGO, May 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. supply chain is healing from early pandemic shocks that sent shipping costs skyrocketing and squeezed supplies of everything from toilet paper to pasta, but more than three years later, material shortages and hiring woes linger. Speakers from Walmart (WMT.N), Colgate-Palmolive (CL.N), Toyota (7203.T) and other companies will discuss their supply-chain strategies at the Reuters Events supply chain conference in Chicago on Wednesday and Thursday, as inflation and interest rate hikes threaten to tip the economy into recession. "Freight costs, logistics, have gone down significantly," said Mario Guerendo, who oversees global supply chain for vehicle engine maker Cummins Inc (CMI.N). After spending whatever it took to keep store shelves stocked during the early days of the pandemic, supply chain executives now are wringing out costs to shelter profits from eroding demand, said Alan Amling, distinguished fellow at the University of Tennessee's Global Supply Chain Institute. "That's a really good thing for the supply chain."

"We've still got certain sectors that are up and some that are down, which was a feature of the pandemic," Croke said. For decades women who refused to wear the hijab were accosted by morality police operating from vans that patrolled busy public spaces. NOVEL TACTICSIn place of the vans, authorities are installing cameras on streets to identify unveiled women, providing a more discreet method of detecting breaches of Iran's conservative dress code. Now women show up frequently unveiled in malls, airports, restaurants and streets in a display of civil disobedience. Several lawmakers and politicians have warned that the protests could resume if authorities continue to focus on penalising women who discard the hijab. "My grocery shop was closed down for a few days by authorities for serving unveiled women," said Asghar, 45, in the central city of Isfahan.

Not all retailers are environmentally focused, "so things end up being thrown away because of the cost," he said. If consumers want to avoid contributing to landfills with their returns, there are a few things to keep in mind. Luxury brands, too, are more likely to trash returns to avoid products ending up in secondary markets and tarnishing the label's value. Retailers are investing more in returns technology, services, and other advanced strategies as returns volumes grow. Consolidation strategies used by Amazon and other major retailers cut down on shipping costs by pooling returns together at stores.
