By the time that former President Donald J. Trump joined TikTok in June, conservative content was flourishing on the social media platform, known for its grip on young people. That environment has had an effect on many voters, particularly members of Generation Z, for whom Mr. Trump has been a consistent presence on presidential ballots since they became eligible to vote. The appetite for conservative-leaning content online inspired CJ Pearson, 21 and a chairman of the Republican National Committee’s Youth Advisory Council, to develop a digital initiative called Influence America. “People follow people,” said Mr. Pearson, a veteran of the youth-focused conservative platform PragerU. “They don’t follow organizations; they don’t follow parties.”

Read previewSen. JD Vance, now a vice-presidential nominee, has some strong opinions on how America can better support families. Vance, the author of "Hillbilly Elegy" and a former venture capitalist, has been outspoken about his views on family and birth rates. "We should worry that in America, family formation, our birth rates, a ton of indicators of family health have collapsed," Vance said in 2021 remarks. But Vance's actions as a senator suggest some support for Democratic policies, such as an expansion of the child tax credit. Vance expressed support for the credit, saying at the time that "we're the party of families," Punchbowl News reported.

“It’s about time,” he said, adding the Vances “are going to represent a new generation of Americans.”The 2024 presidential campaign has seen three politicians of South Asian descent vying for the White House: Former South Carolina Gov. Since 2020, according to Pew, the number of eligible Asian American voters has increased by 2 million – roughly the population of Nebraska. According to the Asian American voter survey, the economy, education, inflation and immigration were “highly important” for Asian Americans this election cycle. Kumar said immigration is top of mind for many South Asian Republican voters because of the backlog facing millions of Hindu and Indian Americans who are waiting for green cards. Chen said the work must continue to engage with Asian American voters – many of whom are immigrant, first-time voters – to understand the key role they could play in the upcoming election.

The second day of the Republican National Convention will feature remarks from a bevy of Republican lawmakers and other prominent political figures, including multiple former Trump campaign rivals. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential primary and was recently a finalist to be his running mate, is set to speak. Also on the schedule: Trump's former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who challenged Trump in the 2024 GOP primary and did not immediately endorse him when she ended her presidential campaign. Haley said in an exit speech that Trump would have to "earn the votes" of Republicans who did not back him. President Biden, in a nationally televised statement, expressed gratitude that Mr. Trump had been swiftly evacuated and said “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence.” He later spoke to Mr. Trump, according to the White House.

Read previewThe US Secret Service has come under intense scrutiny following a fatal shooting that left former President Donald Trump wounded at his rally Saturday night. As news of the shooting was still breaking, notable figures were quick to question the Secret Service and its leadership following the shooting. Matt Shoemaker, a former intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency, went as far as calling the shooting a "major failure" of the Secret Service. Representatives for the Secret Service were not present at the press conference to respond to questions about the incident. Trump's campaign, as well as the Republican National Committee, have indicated the party's planned convention in Milwaukee this week will proceed following the rally shooting.

President Joe Biden on Sunday said that he has ordered an independent investigation into the security for the rally where a shooter attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump. "I've directed an independent review of the national security of yesterday's rally, and we will share the results of that independent review as well," he said on Sunday afternoon. There will also be a review of the security plan for the Republican National Convention, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday. Both the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee have said that the party's major event will still go on as planned. The president also extended his condolences to Corey Comperatore, who was killed while shielding his family after shots rang out at the Trump rally.

Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks as she announces she is suspending her campaign, in Charleston, South Carolina, U.S., March 6, 2024. Nikki Haley has been invited to speak at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week, according to two sources familiar with the decision, who said details had not yet been finalized. The Republican National Committee, the Trump campaign and Haley's team did not immediately return a request for comment. Chaney Denton, a longtime senior aide to Haley told NBC News at the time that she "was not invited" to the convention and that "she's fine with that." Ron DeSantis, another one of Trump's primary opponents who frequently clashed with the former president, is scheduled to speak at the convention.

The Republican Party and its conservative allies are engaged in an unprecedented legal campaign targeting the American voting system. Their wide-ranging and methodical effort is laying the groundwork to contest an election that they argue, falsely, is already being rigged against former President Donald J. Trump. The campaign involves a powerful network of Republican lawyers and activist groups, working loosely in concert with the Republican National Committee. Many of the key players were active in Mr. Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Mr. Trump’s allies have followed a two-pronged approach: restricting voting for partisan advantage ahead of Election Day and short-circuiting the process of ratifying the winner afterward, if Mr. Trump loses.

If elected, Donald Trump has promised to maintain the dollar as the world's reserve currency. But his policies risk deteriorating faith in the greenback, according to one think tank. At number 13, the former president pledged to keep the US dollar in place as the world's main reserve currency. But a second Trump term might actually erode greenback's dominant role, wrote Mark Sobel, US chair of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum. During his first term, Trump threatened to leave NATO and took the US out of key agreements, such as the Iran nuclear deal, Paris Climate Accord and Trans-Pacific Partnership, Sobel wrote.

“FIGHT FOR AND PROTECT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE WITH NO CUTS, INCLUDING NO CHANGES TO THE RETIREMENT AGE,” the platform reads. “It’s not a genuine policy prescription to save Social Security,” Jason Fichtner, chief economist at the Bipartisan Policy Center and former acting deputy commissioner of Social Security, said of the party platform. The combined Social Security trust funds – which help support monthly payments to the elderly, survivors and people with disabilities – are expected to be exhausted in 2035, according to its trustees’ annual report. Both candidates have painted themselves into a corner by saying they won’t cut benefits, said Biggs. “Never before have the two parties’ presidential candidates been closer in their positions on Social Security,” he said.

Compared with previous platforms, it dials back references to abortion — downplaying what is, for Republicans, a losing issue. Here, Trump is clearly employing sleight of hand in an effort not to be seen as autocratically inclined. But at this point, if you believe that, I have a degree from Trump University I’d like to sell you. For today, however, I want to focus not on what the platform proposes but what it says about the G.O.P. Republicans may try to brand themselves as patriots, but they truly appear to despise the nation they live in.

In this gilded echo chamber, Mr. Trump enjoys unwavering devotion — and collects the staggering price of admission. During the 2014-15 season — the last before Mr. Trump officially entered politics — The Times counted 52 fund-raiser events at Mar-a-Lago. More than two dozen midterm candidates had already held fund-raisers on the property when Mr. Trump made that statement. But that changed when Letitia James, the New York attorney general, sued Mr. Trump for exaggerating the value of his properties. And, unlike when Mr. Trump was president, “he was there a lot,” Mr. Rustmann said.

Trump’s obvious posturing toward the center was evident on Monday, when the Republican National Committee’s platform committee approved a draft that included language apparently moderating the GOP stance on abortion and same-sex marriageJill Filipovic. That decision has proven disastrous on many levels— especially for women in Republican-run states who continue to suffer the consequences. If leaving abortion to the states was the plan, why have Republicans pushed for national bans in Congress? He backed a national 20-week ban and promised to appoint pro-life judges who he thought would overturn Roe. Earlier this year, he said a 15-week national ban sounded very reasonable; now he doesn’t seem to want to discuss it.

On Monday, Trump's campaign announced that the Republican National Committee adopted the former president's platform for the Republican Party. It also promised to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits without any cuts, including no efforts to raise the retirement age to receive federal benefits. The latest Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees report found that the program will only be able to pay out full benefits for the next 11 years , after which 83% of the benefits will be available. The platform said that "Trump has made absolutely clear that he will not cut one penny from Medicare or Social Security. CNN —The panel charged with crafting and producing a platform for the Republican National Committee has adopted a scaled-back document that softened language on abortion and same-sex marriage, Donald Trump’s campaign announced Monday. The new party platform, which was quickly approved Monday by the RNC platform committee, reflects the former president’s broader policy agenda on a range of issues as the presumptive Republican nominee continues to reshape the party in his third run for the White House. Trump approved the updated platform earlier in the day, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The new platform does not mention a national abortion ban, a policy some social conservatives wanted to see included, but which the former president has publicly said he opposes. The platform will be taken up at the full party convention, which begins in Milwaukee next week.

It's a fraction of the size of the platform the RNC used during the 2016 and 2020 election cycles. The Trump campaign in a press release Monday afternoon touted the new document as "President Donald J. Trump's 2024 Republican Party Platform." The platform now begins with language mirroring a Trump campaign press release, including the presumptive nominee's "Make America Great Again" and "America First" slogans. The GOP also departs from its old platform on Social Security and Medicare. "Republicans will tackle Inflation, unleash American Energy, restore Economic Growth, and secure our Borders to preserve Social Security and Medicare funding for the next Generation and beyond," it reads.

Now, with Biden facing an increasingly uncertain political future amid the fallout from his shaky debate performance, Republicans are trying to determine what the Democratic incumbent stepping aside would actually mean for the Trump campaign. “Chaos is our friend,” a person close to Trump said. Even if Biden is not the Democratic nominee, the Trump campaign believes the issues likely to decide the election will remain the same. After Carlson suggested Harris would replace Biden on the Democratic ticket, Trump predicted: “Not really. Things would be very different in 2024 if Biden decided to leave the race, although Democrats’ convention will return to Chicago in August. It also means that if Biden dropped out of the race, it would largely be Biden backers who would be responsible for picking his replacement. You can assume, for instance, that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a top contender to be on the ballot in such a scenario. The DNC actually needed to convene a meeting to affirm Sargent Shriver as Democratic nominee George McGovern’s second-choice running mate.
