Researchers at the Field Museum scan a mummified individual displayed in the "Inside Ancient Egypt" exhibition. Ancient Egyptians believed that the soul remained inside the body after death, so embalmers mummified bodies to preserve the spirit for the afterlife, according to Field Museum scientists. Almaty, Kazakhstan CNN —Several cities around the globe have reinvented themselves in recent years, but none more successfully than Almaty. Since the collapse of the USSR, Kazakhstan’s largest city (population 2.2 million and growing) has evolved from a drab, run-of-the-mill Soviet metropolis into the urban star of Central Asia. “It’s an incredibly livable city,” says long-time American resident Dennis Keen, a historic preservation advocate and founder of Walking Almaty. The fossil leg bone of an extinct terror bird that was found in Colombia's Tatacoa Desert is shown. While some terror bird fossils have been found in Florida and Texas, the specimen from La Venta is believed to be the northernmost terror bird from South America documented by scientists. Placing terror birds in La Venta “is one step closer to understanding how terror birds finally got to North America,” Degrange said. A map shows the countries in North America and South America (in gray) where terror bird fossils have been found. “We know that probably one of the drivers that led terror birds to get larger and larger was the competition between species of terror birds — but why that big?” he said.

CNN —A pair of rare Ming Dynasty fish jars dating from the 16th century have sold for £9.6 million ($12.5 million) at auction, smashing their estimate of £1 million ($1.3 million). “This remarkable result makes it the highest priced Chinese work of art sold at auction worldwide this year,” said Sotheby’s. Part of the lot’s appeal was the fact that this was the first ever appearance of a complete pair of fish jars with covers at auction. There is only one other covered pair known to be maintained together, and they are held by the Musée Guimet in Paris. Editor’s Note: Curator and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe is CNN Style’s guest editor for the month of November. The child is tucked away in the bottom left-hand corner, but in the mind of curator and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe, his presence fills the entire frame. But Akinkugbe holds a magnifying glass over these slim fragments, off-cuts of the dominant whitewashed narrative of art history, and forces them to take up space. “I think a lot of it was down to the fact that (art history) is viewed as an elite, white field. The coincidence at times feels “sinister” for Akinkugbe, but she believes there is longevity in the increased interest in and support for Black art and artists.

A new piece of music believed to be penned by Frédéric Chopin has been discovered in the vault of a New York museum nearly 200 years after it was first written. McClellan told the BBC he was initially unsure if the piece was actually Chopin’s after photographing the score and playing it himself on his keyboard at home. It’s beautiful.”“This is not the most complicated music by Chopin but it is one of the most authentic Chopin styles that you can imagine,” Lang Lang told the newspaper. Chopin, who wrote mostly piano solos, was born to a French father and Polish mother near Warsaw in 1810. According to the New York Times, experts say Chopin is believed to have written around 28 waltzes before he died aged 39 in France in 1849.

Lost Chopin music uncovered in ‘thrilling’ discovery

“He found it peculiar that he could not think of any waltzes by Chopin that matched the measures on the page,” reads the statement. “Chopin famously wrote in ‘small forms,’ but this work, lasting about one minute, is shorter than any other waltz by him,” adds the statement. “Extensive research points to the strong likelihood that the piece is by Chopin,” according to the statement. This research included analysis by paper conservators who found that the paper and ink match those that Chopin normally used. The discovery of an unknown piece of work by Chopin has not happened since the late 1930s, according to the museum.

Ulf Mauder/picture alliance/Getty ImagesMany observers fear the ruling Georgian Dream party will resort to anything to stay in power. This year, Georgian Dream pushed through a Kremlin-style “foreign agent” law, which critics say aims to shut down watchdogs who call the government to account. She described some of the statements made by Georgian Dream officials as a “copy-paste” of those from Stalin’s show trials. ‘Soviet mentality’A question puzzling many is why the formerly center-left Georgian Dream has made a sudden authoritarian pivot. Joining the EU would require cleaning up the country’s judiciary and giving up power if Georgian Dream is voted out on Saturday.

The Miami installation was eventually removed amid public safety concerns, but all three editions were sold at the fair. A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

Japanese American leaders slammed former President Donald Trump after he compared Jan. 6 rioters to those of Japanese descent who were incarcerated during World War II just because of their race. “Nobody’s ever — maybe the Japanese during the Second World War, frankly. GIZA, Egypt — Even before it opened 12 enormous galleries containing priceless artifacts this week, the Grand Egyptian Museum looked to be making history. Egypt is finally allowing the public to view some of the 700,000 years' worth of antiquities devoted to four eras of history on a plot the size of 80 football fields, a project delayed for nearly two decades by war, an armed uprising and the pandemic. Only a section of the museum covering over 5 million square feet opened Wednesday, with the rest of the facility to be inaugurated when authorities deem the time is right. When it is opened fully, it will be the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. The six-story Grand Staircase with a view of the pyramids and an atrium containing monuments, pharaonic statues and sarcophagi opened in November.

In the 1920s, a group of prominent Kansas City residents formed the Liberty Memorial Association to construct a memorial dedicated to honor those who served in World War I. With the help of the Kansas City Police Department bomb and arson unit, the capsule was successfully opened with no explosions. Archaeologists found 50 Viking-era skeletons in Åsum, Denmark. Dating back to the 9th or 10th century, the graves are evidence of international trade. The area's growth was influenced by these trade routes and its proximity to the sea. They had no idea they were standing on the well-preserved graves of 50 Viking-era skeletons. "As we suspected, the graves tell us a story of people connected to the international trade routes," Borre Lundø told Business Insider via email.
