Las Vegas police are investigating after an officer fatally shot a 43-year-old father who had called 911 for help during a home break-in. Durham reported that he was inside the house with his 15-year-old daughter and he was going to lock himself in a bathroom, Koren told reporters Thursday. Boudreaux was arrested during the incident, Koren said. She appears to have had some relationship with Durham, Koren said, but police provided no clarity as to what that relationship might be. The officer’s use of force is being reviewed using the standard set by the Supreme Court’s decision in Graham v. Connor, Koren told reporters.

In 1910, Puccini was in New York to supervise the opening night of his opera “La Fanciulla del West,” the Met’s very first world premiere. With the tenor Enrico Caruso and the soprano Emmy Destinn, household names in their day, in the leading roles, “Fanciulla” was a runaway hit. Now, more than 100 years later, with a severe lack of music education in our schools and competition from an ever-expanding array of streaming entertainment options, opera faces its greatest existential challenge. We are fighting to survive economically (our European colleagues are better off with substantial government funding), regain our artistic footing and secure new audiences and donors. This is particularly difficult to accomplish because for decades there has been resistance to substantial artistic change from administrators, academics and critics.

A review of recorded calls from the Metropolitan Detention Center revealed Combs used the telephone accounts of at least eight inmates to allegedly evade monitoring, prosecutors said. The new allegations were revealed in a court filing late Friday as federal prosecutors argue Combs should not be entitled to another bail hearing. A federal grand jury has been regularly convening in the continuing criminal investigation, CNN reported October 31, citing three sources. audience engagement — and explicitly discussed with his family how to ensure that the video had his desired effect on potential jury members in this case,” prosecutors said. CNN —The United States has returned more than 1,400 looted artifacts worth $10 million to India as part of an ongoing initiative to repatriate stolen art from countries across South and Southeast Asia, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday. The trafficked goods recovered include items that, until recently, were on view at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The DA’s office obtained an arrest warrant for him in 2012though he remains in custody in India, pending his extradition to the US. Since its creation over a decade ago, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Antiquities Trafficking Unit –– a task force of lawyers, investigators and art experts –– has recovered 5,800 antiquities valued at almost $460 million. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamlining the process of returning stolen antiquities back to India.

At the time, Hochul said congestion pricing at that rate would be a hardship on New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet in the post-pandemic economy. Now the race is on to get congestion pricing approved before President-elect Donald Trump, who opposes it, takes office in January. The revised congestion pricing plan is expected to go before the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board for approval next week. After the expected MTA approval, the state and city will then ink an agreement with transportation officials in the Biden administration, who have been supportive of congestion pricing. They also predicted that congestion pricing would generate $15 billion that could be used to modernize subways and buses.

New York is once again moving to adopt the nation’s first-of-its-kind congestion pricing program to ease traffic and raise money for mass transit. That means drivers may have to pay to enter the most congested parts of Manhattan as soon as early January. Kathy Hochul had revived the tolling plan, which she abruptly paused in June over concerns that it could slow New York City’s post-pandemic recovery. But now, five months later, Ms. Hochul has brought back the program with reduced tolls. Mr. Trump has vowed to kill the program in his first week in office.
