Arm and Qualcomm are heading to trial this week in Delaware after two years of legal disputes. The legal battle over a licensing agreement puts Arm in conflict with one of its largest customers. The trial could have big implications for the entire chip industry, from M&A to IP. The dispute centers on a licensing arrangement connected to Qualcomm's $1.4 billion acquisition of chip startup Nuvia in 2021. Should Arm win the legal battle, it could halt shipments of laptops made by partners — including Microsoft — that contain disputed Qualcomm chips.

Why ABC News settled with Donald Trump for $15 million

CNN —George Stephanopoulos ended Sunday’s “This Week” program without any mention of him or ABC News settling Donald Trump’s defamation lawsuit against them. The suit was triggered by a segment on “This Week,” but ABC News has not reported on TV at all its agreement to pay $15 million to Trump’s presidential foundation at all. But the speculation – about why ABC agreed to settle, and why now, and why at such expense - has not gone away. Some Trump critics on the left are also certain that they know what’s going on: They say ABC and parent company Disney are bowing to Trump for craven political purposes. According to court documents, ABC and Trump’s team agreed to the settlement terms last Friday.

Milad Panahipour, an Iranian lawyer, told The Associated Press that Ahmady had been arrested on Saturday over the performance. Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, a Norwegian-based organization, said it received a report that two of the men performing with her — musicians Sohail Faghih-Nassiri and Ehsan Beyraghdar — were also arrested. So-called “anti-unveiling clinics" have also been established, where women are encouraged to follow the hijab laws through "therapy." The Hijab and Chastity Law was originally submitted by former president Ebrahim Raisi, who died in May, and was ultimately passed in September, according to Human Rights Watch. The U.N. Human Rights Council's experts on Friday called for the law to be repealed, describing it as a "comprehensive system of gender-based persecution."

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Sunday described President-elect Donald Trump's threat to jail members of the House Jan. 6th Committee as "an outrageous statement" and said that President Joe Biden should consider preemptive pardons for committee members. Asked whether Biden should consider preemptive pardons for committee members, which included seven House Democrats and two House Republicans — then-Reps. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. — Sanders told NBC News' "Meet the Press," "Well, I think he might want to consider that very seriously." His remarks come just over a week after Trump told NBC News' "Meet the Press" that members of the committee, which were tasked with investigating that Jan. 6 attack, "should go to jail." A spokesperson for the Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Sanders' remarks. It’s minting millionaires while potentially harming others — yet everyone, even the losers, seem to be in on the joke. Some believe memecoins are permitted because the Securities and Exchange Commission has never formally categorized bitcoin as a security. And, crucially, many memecoins, including Fartcoin, do not appear able to be legally purchased from U.S. soil on most of the crypto exchanges offering them. In fact, Trump world has already shown signs of accelerating its embrace of cryptocurrencies. Yet there is clearly a dark side to the memecoin world.

“Changing the law will give parents the right to sell their young daughters,” Batta said in a telephone interview last month. UNICEF reported in April 2023 that 28% of girls are married before the legal age of 18, although under Iraqi law, girls as young as 15 can be married with the consent of a judge and their parents. As well as setting the age of marriage, it addressed child custody, inheritances and alimony payments focused on the welfare of both children and women. As a result, some lawmakers and rights groups are concerned that this would pave the way for legalizing and expanding child marriage in the country. “Changing the law will lead many underage girls to face circumstances similar to what I went through,” she said.

Known as the USMCA, the trade deal was negotiated by the first Trump administration and replaced the quarter-century-old North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, in 2020. A review of the trade pact was expected in 2026 regardless of Trump’s pledge, due to a requirement in the agreement. But Trump’s proclamation has put Canada and Mexico – the US’ two biggest trading partners – on notice that he may pursue major changes. Trump may also be looking at ways to shrink the US trade deficit, one of his favorite economic measures. The goods trade deficit with Mexico alone increased more than 78% between 2020, the year the USMCA took effect, and the end of 2023.

That is how some convicted felons say society looks at them, no matter the crime. There is a stigma that sticks to convicted felons even years after the crime, says Bruce Western, professor of Sociology and Social Justice and director of the Justice Lab at Columbia University. “It doesn’t hurt that he (Trump) is an older White man who is extremely wealthy.”Restrictions on convicted felons vary from state to state. But while convicted felons can eventually find jobs, “it’s really at the bottom of the labor market,” he said. Portrait of Andrew N. Ferguson Federal Trade Commission“At the FTC, we will end Big Tech’s vendetta against competition and free speech,” Ferguson posted to Xon Tuesday. Consolidation in tech makes it easier for governments to pressure social media companies to take down content, Ferguson told Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt. Schmitt, as the state’s attorney general in 2022, led a high-profile lawsuit about alleged social media censorship that wound up before the Supreme Court in its last term. Ferguson has weighed in on social media speech in other ways, too. This isn’t the plot of “War of the Worlds,” but rather the result of numerous unidentified drone sightings on the East Coast in recent weeks. Drone sightings have been reported in at least six states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Virginia. Republican New Jersey Assemblyman Paul Kanitra told CNN’s Sara Sidner Friday morning there had been drone sightings every night since then. Josh Shapiro said his administration is “aware of” reported drone sightings and is taking them seriously. The official noted similar flight approach patterns from nearby airports matched the visual sightings reported to tip lines.

WASHINGTON — ABC will pay $15 million as part of a legal settlement with President-elect Donald Trump, closing out a dispute that centered on an interview in which Trump alleged anchor George Stephanopoulos defamed him. The defendants, identified by the settlement as ABC, ABC News and Stephanopoulos, will also pay $1 million to Trump's counsel and add a note to an online article about the interview declaring that they "regret statements" about Trump, according to the settlement. Stephanopoulos said during the interview that Trump "has been found liable for rape by a jury." Trump, however, was found liable in a civil case for sexually abusing Carroll, not liable for her alleged rape. On Friday ahead of the settlement, a judge ordered that Trump and Stephanopoulos be available for depositions next week regarding the case.

Texas sued a New York physician for prescribing a woman abortion pills, according to a lawsuit filed by state Attorney General Ken Paxton. In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Collin County, Paxton said that Margaret Daley Carpenter, a New York doctor, provided mifepristone and misprostol, a pair of abortion-inducing drugs, to a 20-year-old pregnant woman there, which led to a medical abortion. "Carpenter's conduct violates the Texas Health and Safety Code’s prohibition on prescribing abortion-inducing drugs via telemedicine," the lawsuit said. Carpenter is the co-medical director and founder of the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, an advocacy group working to advance telemedicine abortion nationwide, the group's website says. "Make no mistake: I will do everything in my power to enforce the laws of New York State,” Hochul said in a statement Friday.

CNN —ABC News will pay $15 million to a “presidential foundation and museum” in a settlement reached with President-elect Donald Trump in his defamation suit against the network and anchor George Stephanopoulos. The settlement, which was filed publicly Saturday, reveals the network will also pay $1 million in Trump’s attorneys’ fees and will issue an apology. Carroll alleged that Trump raped her in a department store in the mid-1990s and that he defamed her when he denied her claim. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million for battery and defamation. CNN —TikTok has plans for another appeal as it faces a ban on January 19. The latest ruling follows last week’s decision by the same appeals court to uphold the law, citing national security concerns. The Supreme Court could make a quick decision on the case. “I have trouble thinking that the conservative force on the Supreme Court would not see this as a (national) security case,” Schiller said.
