Nonfarm payrolls increased by 12,000 for the month, down sharply from September and below the Dow Jones estimate for 100,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. In what had already been expected to be a downbeat report, October posted the smallest gain since December 2020. A broader measure of unemployment that includes discouraged workers and those holding part-time jobs for economic reasons also was unchanged at 7.7%. In the report narrative, the BLS noted that the Boeing strike likely subtracted 44,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector, which lost 46,000 positions overall. The meager jobs numbers along with wages about in line with expectations help cement another interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next week.

Loading chart...LONDON — U.K. borrowing costs posted two days of gains right after the Labour government unveiled a huge package of borrowing and tax rises in its Wednesday budget — but analysts downplayed the possibility of a second "mini-budget" crisis in the British bond market. The 10-year gilt yield , representing medium-term borrowing costs for the government, was slightly lower on the day at 11:20 a.m. London time. Yields move inversely to prices, so higher yields represent a sell-off in bonds — and an aversion to funding U.K. debt. The incident sent bond yields soaring so rapidly, they threatened to destabilize pension funds. In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

New York CNN —More than 30,000 Boeing workers will vote again Monday on whether or not to end a crippling seven-week strike. The deal is not significantly different from an offer rejected by nearly two-thirds of membership just over a week ago. And it happened 10 years ago at Boeing, when about two-thirds of members rejected an offer that ended the pension plan. Despite its many problems, Boeing is a major force in America economy, and it is the largest American exporter. Ending the strike is important for Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who started in the job just five weeks before the strike began.

The monthly jobs report is typically closely-watched watched by traders and creates a reaction in the market. To be sure, storms in the Southeast and the Boeing labor strike were cited as downward pressures on the labor market. To Elizundia's point, fed funds futures are now pricing in 99.9% odds the central bank cuts rates by 25 basis points next week, and an 83.6% chance it lowers borrowing costs by another quarter-point percentage in December. There was no Fed meeting in October. "And yet, a deeper ponder of the numbers suggests that, beneath all the noise and disruption, is a fundamentally slowing labor market.

Eaton management raised its full-year guidance for both operating margin and earnings per share (EPS). However, we're increasing our price target to $375 per share from $350, implying over 9% upside from Wednesday's close. 2025 outlook Looking to next year, management didn't provide formal sales or earnings guidance, but they did provide growth assumptions for the company's key end markets. watch nowLONDON — U.K. bond yields spiked sharply Thursday after the ruling Labour Party unveiled a sweeping package of tax hikes and increased borrowing. Yields had already risen on Wednesday shortly after the budget announcement by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, which contained plans for £40 billion ($52 billion) worth of tax hikes and committed to substantially higher borrowing in the coming years. Despite the big moves this week, the gilt market is remaining relatively stable compared to September 2022, when the U.K. suffered its so-called "mini-budget crisis." Analysts had said ahead of the October 2024 budget that such bond market volatility was unlikely to repeat itself, largely because the U.K. inflation has dropped sharply since the Truss era. Analysts at Goldman Sachs said Thursday it would "reduce the urgency for sequential cuts in the near term."

Goldman Sachs estimates that Helene could shave as much as 50,000 off the payrolls count, though Hurricane Milton probably happened too late to impact the October count. The Boeing strike, meanwhile, could lower the total by 41,000, added Goldman, which is forecasting total payrolls growth of 95,000. Data has been solidYet indicators leading up to the much-watched jobs report show that hiring has continued apace and layoffs are low, despite the damage done from the storms and the strikes. Still, the White House is estimating that the events cumulatively may hit the payrolls count by as many as 100,000. The "disruptions will make interpreting this month's jobs report harder than usual," Jared Bernstein, chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, said Wednesday.

Boeing and its machinists' union have agreed on a new negotiated offer to raise worker pay and potentially end a crippling strike that began almost seven weeks ago with a vote on the new proposal set for Monday. The union urged workers to approve the contract. Boeing said Thursday at the end of the contract, average machinist pay will average $119,309. ADP said it was the best month for job creation since July 2023. “Even amid hurricane recovery, job growth was strong in October,” ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said. Job creation was strongly concentrated in companies with 500 or more employees, which added 140,000 of the total. The ADP report traditionally tees up the more closely watched nonfarm payrolls count from the Bureau of Labor Services. The BLS report showed private job gains of 223,000 in September and 254,000 total payrolls growth.

The final pre-election edition of the closely watched monthly jobs report is set to be published Nov. 1, four days ahead of Election Day. All eyes are now on a handful of states expected to see razor-thin vote margins, likely to be determined by a small but crucial pool of persuadable voters. While the Keystone State's unemployment rate climbed by a tenth of a percentage point compared with the September 2023 figure, its latest reading, at 3.4%, marked two straight years below 4%.

O’Connor set a deadline of Friday for the administration to explain its use of so-called DEI policies in that program. The diversity language used in the Boeing criminal plea deal has been around since at least 2018 – during the Trump administration, according to a person familiar with the policy. Still, it has become a key holdup as O’Connor mulls whether to approve the plea deal. Now, the court battle playing out in Texas will decide whether to allow Boeing to plead guilty as part of a deal with the Justice Department to resolve a criminal investigation stemming from plane crashes that killed 346 people. The issue first arose at an October 11 hearing in Fort Worth, where O’Connor worked through the routine details of the plea deal before taking a sharp detour to ask why the Justice Department included DEI considerations in choosing a monitor.

Spirit's consideration of additional furloughs demonstrates how the lengthy strike is weighing on an already-fragile aerospace supply chain. CEO Kelly Ortberg has vowed to turn around the company and laid out a four-point plan. CEO Kelly Ortberg vowed to "return Boeing to its former legacy" and said the company would focus on changing its culture. However, restoring the traditional defined-benefit pension plan — replaced with a 401(k) in 2014 negotiations — has been a key issue for many on the picket lines. Bank of America analysts estimated that restoring this pension plan would cost up to $400 million annually. Boeing's production has been limited as it faces supply-chain constraints and renewed scrutiny from regulators in the wake of January's Alaska Airlines blowout.
