China's top three state-owned airlines reported profit declines in the third quarter despite record summer passenger numbers and fuller planes than last year, as a slowdown in domestic economic growth pushes flyers to seek cheaper fares. Beijing-headquartered Air China on Wednesday reported a net profit of 4.14 billion yuan ($581.34 million) in the quarter, down from 4.24 billion yuan a year earlier. China Eastern Airlines on the same day posted a net profit of 2.63 billion yuan, down 28.2% year on year. The country's largest airline China Southern said on Monday there was "strong demand in the aviation market" but reported a 23.9% year-on-year drop in third-quarter net profit to 3.19 billion yuan. Airlines globally have been seeing stable demand but overcapacity and sluggish yields as a post-pandemic travel boom abates and most planes are back in the skies.

Federal authorities, meanwhile, say their security procedures are sound heading into Election Day, Nov. 5. Its domestic flight bookings are down 19% for the week of the election compared with the same week last year. One airline alone, the budget company IndiGo Airlines, received nearly 30 bomb threats in four days since Sunday, according to statements by the carrier. Bomb threat hoaxes aren’t a new phenomenon in India – several airports received similar threats in April and June this year. Millions of dollars lostEach bomb threat causes a ripple effect of disruptions, costing both airlines and passengers huge amounts of time and money, said Lazar. Authorities follow these steps “word for word” with every single threat, said aviation minister Naidu. “Passengers are going to be scared but those who need to fly will fly … so what’s going to happen if this havoc is created around Diwali?” Lazar said.

A report from travel news site Skift shows that seven major airlines have retreated from the country in the past four months. Longer flights require more fuel, which make flights more expensive. "Indeed U.S. carriers are making hard but very commercial decisions to drop Chinese services and redeploy the aircraft elsewhere," he said. Collectively, Chinese airlines have increased capacity to Europe, compared to pre-pandemic, even though the market and trade flows were much stronger then, said Grant.

CNN —Senior-level personnel changes at the US Secret Service as well as the creation of new divisions are underway as the agency works to resolve security breakdowns that preceded the two attempts on former President Donald Trump’s life this summer. Typically, incoming presidents choose their own Secret Service director, and it’s hard to know whether Vice President Kamala Harris or Trump would retain Rowe. “I’m trying to get programs more closely aligned with the mission, getting them out to the field so that they are directly supporting enforcement operations, major criminal investigations and, of course, protective operations,” Rowe told CNN. Radio calls from local police who saw the shooter on the roof shortly before he opened fire never made it to the Secret Service. CNN has previously reported on the strain inside the Secret Service as the agency dramatically ramps up protection during the final stretch of the campaign season.

Airports are looking to private wireless networks to improve operations, execs said at MWC Las Vegas. Private wireless networks are key to ushering in a better airport experience for both the travel hubs' operations and the billions of passengers who pass through them. Private networks generally offer greater security and reliability, lower latency, and higher bandwidth compared with public networks. "As I think about a future with a lot of growth, private wireless is foundational. Private wireless networks can also help enterprises with cost and mobility by reducing the expense of installing cables and by providing connectivity to areas that might be harder to reach with wires.

Washington CNN —Boeing factory workers felt pressured to prioritize production speed over quality and said they did not receive enough training to properly perform their jobs, according to the results of a special investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published Wednesday. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines shortly after takeoff. One of the more egregious examples, according to the audit, was a Boeing mechanic who used an improvised measuring device to check gaps between components. But there is still much work to be done on fixing Boeing’s safety culture, he said. “I think the safety culture change is going to be a long-term project,” Whitaker said.

FAA administrator Mike Whitaker said Boeing and SpaceX should be treated equally after Elon Musk attacked the regulator for fining his rocket company "for trivia" and said it should focus on Boeing's Starliner issues instead. In a post on X last week, Musk railed against the FAA's proposed $633,000 fine for SpaceX over two instances where the rocket company violated its launch licenses. Advertisement"NASA deemed the Boeing capsule unsafe for astronaut return, turning, out of necessity, to SpaceX, yet instead of fining Boeing for putting astronauts at risk, the FAA is fining SpaceX for trivia," the billionaire SpaceX founder wrote. SpaceX is also engaged in a war of words with the aviation regulator over delays to the next launch of Starship, the giant rocket Musk wants to use to travel to Mars. The FAA and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent outside normal working hours.

The orange-robed icon looks on as the pilot speedily executes a dramatic last-minute turn to land the A319 on the slender runway. That’s just another normal working day at Bhutan’s Paro International Airport (PBH), widely considered one of the most technically difficult plane landings in the world. Paro is a category C airport, which means that pilots must have special training to fly there. As the national flag carrier, Druk Air has taken much of the responsibility for pilot training on itself. He believes there are 50 licensed pilots in Bhutan, but that number could easily double in the next few years.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe aviation industry still sees so-called "sustainable aviation fuel" (SAF) as the only viable way to meet its decarbonization targets, even as opposition and the potential for higher costs for passengers pose obstacles to the fast-growing sector. SAF is a broad term describing fuel that is burned by an aircraft engine, but instead of using kerosene is derived from more sustainable sources. The planemaker said it is collaborating with producer HIF Global on the development of methane-based fuels, and investing in alcohol-to-jet fuel producer LanzaJet. But IATA's own forecast for SAF production to triple in 2024 to 1.9 billion liters would cover just 0.53% of aviation fuel demand for the year. "The truth is, it's going to be more expensive, you can't really sugarcoat that," said HIF Global's Clara Bowman.

BANGKOK — Thai rescuers used hoes on Friday to search muddy, forested terrain for debris and the remains of nine people aboard a charter flight that crashed the day before, authorities said, with all the travelers presumed dead. All aboard the charter plane are presumed dead, said Chonlatee Yongtrong, the governor of Chachoengsao province, the site of the crash, as authorities scramble to investigate the cause. “We found many human remains,” the governor told reporters late Thursday, adding that the muddy terrain complicated the task of searchers. The plane, operating flight TFT209 headed for the eastern province of Trat, had taken off from the Suvarnabhumi airport in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
