CNN —People who only exercise on weekends have a similar risk of developing mild dementia to those who work out more frequently, a new study has found. A team of academics from Latin America and Europe set out to determine whether the frequency of exercise affects the risk of developing mild dementia. The finding led the team to conclude that 13% of cases of mild dementia could be avoided if all middle-aged people exercised at least once or twice a week. When compared with the group that did not exercise, the weekend warriors were 13% less likely to develop mild dementia, and those in the regular and combined groups were 12% less likely. I feel quite strongly that the weekend warriors around the world should be told that what they are doing is fine.”He added: “The weekend warrior research is starting to add up now.

More younger women are getting breast cancer, and doctors are scrambling to understand why. While having a baby may temporarily increase a woman’s breast cancer risk, it slightly lowers long-term risk, said Dr. Ann Partridge, co-founder and director of the Program for Young Adults with Breast Cancer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. What’s known about breast cancer in younger womenDoctors are still scratching the surface in researching why breast cancer is becoming more prevalent at a younger age. They’re not breastfeeding as much, which does increase breast cancer risk. That would indicate that obesity likely isn’t much of a factor in the rising rates of breast cancer among younger women, said Toriola, of Washington University.

It isn't an accident that people who want to cancel a subscription often have to navigate a web of bureaucracy and confusion. Michelle Lujan Grisham said she will not renew a public health order that temporarily banned carrying firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque, the state's largest city. So there’s no way we could enforce that order.”Lujan Grisham issued the temporary order, originally a 30-day ban, in September 2023 after an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in an Albuquerque park. In 1924, historians and museum curators banded together to bury a time capsule inside the Liberty Memorial, to be opened in 100 years. In the 1920s, a group of prominent Kansas City residents formed the Liberty Memorial Association to construct a memorial dedicated to honor those who served in World War I. With the help of the Kansas City Police Department bomb and arson unit, the capsule was successfully opened with no explosions. The first of these artifacts was a tube of seeds representing the Kansas City agricultural community. The final object is a printing plate from the Kansas City Star dated to November 1, 1921.

A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

The dockworkers' strike threatens supply chains, while Hurricane Helene caused costly damage. Devastation from Hurricane Helene, a dockworkers' strike, and escalating conflict in the Middle East all threaten to scramble supply chains and inflate prices. How much the strike impacts prices depends on how much of a cushion companies have built to deal with any bottlenecks. Bottlenecks also encourage carriers to raise their prices, increasing retail and consumer goods prices, Kent said. The hurricane has also disrupted some supply chains, including healthcare supplies and high-purity quartz needed for semiconductor manufacturing.

Consumers who heat with electricity will be hit the hardest, with their costs projected to rise 13.6% to $1,208 for the winter season, the association found. The expense of maintaining and upgrading the electric grid is driving up costs, particularly in the West, where fires have ravaged the grid and electric heating costs could soar nearly 23%. The price tag for heating with propane will rise 7.3% to $1,442 this winter, while natural gas users will see a 7.2% increase to $644. Natural gas prices have stabilized but are expected to rise over the winter as US exports increase, said Mark Wolfe, the association’s executive director. But those who heat with oil will catch somewhat of a break after a pricey heating season last year, with costs expected to rise only 6.1% to $1,963 this winter.

Republicans stand a good chance of erasing the Democrats’ narrow 51-49 Senate majority in November, a hard reality that complicates Harris' transition planning. Members of Harris’ transition team have studied that one — the handoff from Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Harris' team is operating under an unusually compressed timeline and is still building the basic apparatus needed to vet potential hires and staff an administration. The study found that self-reported suicide attempts among these young people did not seem to increase while these bills were under debate in their state. But once the bills became law, the researchers saw a statistically significant increase in suicide attempts among young trans and nonbinary people who lived in those states. “Enacted anti-transgender laws may really be a source of increased minority stress that leads to increased suicide risk or other mental health issues,” Nath said. When legislation is affirming of a member of the community, research shows, suicide attempts decrease. “So it’s not surprising that these laws we now see are demonstrated to have an association with risk of suicide attempts.”

The MRC, also known as Typhon, is the US Army's new ground-based missile system capable of firing both the Standard Missile 6 and Tomahawk Land Attack missile. The Typhon system fills a gap in the US arsenal, offering a particularly versatile new land-based intermediate-range missile option as US rivals develop and field similar capabilities. Its ongoing deployment has angered China, which has repeatedly demanded the missile system be removed and accused the US of fueling an arms race.

“We are very committed to making sure that Americans have access at an affordable price point for our medicines,” Jorgensen replied. Similarly, Wegovy’s list price is $1,349 in the US, but it costs $186 in Denmark, $140 in Germany and $92 in the United Kingdom, he said. Tuesday’s hearing boiled down to a familiar argument over who is responsible for the US’s higher prices: drug companies that set starting – or “list” – prices or pharmacy benefit managers, the middlemen that negotiate discounts on those list prices in exchange for favorable insurance coverage and access. Jorgensen said Novo Nordisk pays back about 75% of its medicine sales in rebates, discounts and fees, so the net price it receives is far lower than the list price. “The broad totality is that less patients have access to our medicines when we lowered the price,” Jorgensen told Sen. CNN —Nearly 200 chemicals connected to breast cancer are used in the making of food packaging and plastic tableware, and dozens of those carcinogens can migrate into the human body, a new study found. Of the recently detected chemicals in food packaging, 40 are already classified as hazardous by regulatory agencies around the world, according to the study. Rates of early-onset breast cancer in women under 50 are increasing, and experts said the trend cannot be explained by genetics alone. A January 2024 update to that list found 921 possibly carcinogenic chemicals, including 642 that may stimulate estrogen or progesterone production, another known risk factor for breast cancer. FCChumon, created by the Food Packaging Forum, is a list of food contact chemicals that have been detected in human breast milk, blood, urine and tissues.
