Thailand’s foreign ministry said it was “profoundly saddened” by the death of a Thai worker in northern Israel on Friday, according to a statement. The Thai foreign ministry disputed that account, saying the death, and the injury of another of its nationals, had resulted from “an explosion of dropped ammunition” without providing additional details. The statement said the embassy was working to evacuate 10 additional Thai nationals from the kibbutz where the incident had occurred. The agriculture industry in Israel has employed thousands of Thai nationals to tend crops and work in dairies. Thais made up the largest group of foreign nationals killed in the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.

The headline consumer price index rose 0.61% in September from a year earlier, after August's annual increase of 0.35%, and missed a forecast rise of 0.80% in a Reuters poll. Thailand's annual headline inflation quickened in September due mainly to higher prices of diesel and some vegetables, the commerce ministry said on Monday, and was still below the central bank's target range of 1% to 3%. The headline inflation rate is expected to be 1.25% in October and about 1.49% in the final quarter of 2024, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the trade policy and strategy office, told a press conference. In the January to September period, average annual headline inflation was 0.20%. The commerce ministry on Monday revised its forecast for the full year to between 0.2% to 0.8%, from between zero and 1% seen earlier.

Phnom Penh AP —A Cambodian woman who worked as a maid in Malaysia has been deported to her homeland for comments she posted on social media criticizing Cambodian government leaders, in the latest example of a Southeast Asian government helping another arrest a dissident. Radio Free Asia said Nuon Toeun was a supporter of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party, which was dissolved ahead of the 2018 general election as part of a crackdown on the opposition. Chinese consumers are opting for affordable alternatives across various categories to save money. The trend, known as pingti, is driven by economic challenges and is popular among young people. Consumers are finding cheaper substitutes for luxury goods, everyday items, and even healthcare. It's now become a trend in China to save on nearly every consumer category, from luxury goods to everyday consumables to travel, with cheaper substitutes. A Bank of America survey of 1,052 adult Chinese consumers showed weakening consumer sentiment, with 30% of respondents planning to spend more — down from 45% in June.

Google announced Monday it is investing 36 billion Thai baht, or $1 billion, into Thailand for the creation of a new data center and expansion of the country's cloud infrastructure. The investment would see the company create its first data center in Thailand, Google said in a post on its Thailand blog Monday. Google said its debut Thai data center will be located in Chonburi, an eastern province of Thailand. The facility will "help support the growing demand for Google Cloud and AI innovations, as well as popular Google services such as Google Search, Google Maps and Google Workspace" in Thailand, Jackie Wang, Google's Thailand country lead, said in the blog post, according to an English translation taken via Google Translate. But the firm has increasingly come under threat from the surge of generative AI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Moo Deng crypto. Given the sudden popularity of Moo Deng, the Thai national treasure whose name roughly translates as “bouncy pork,” it was only a matter of time before someone turned her into a digital asset. And given the nature of such memecoins, which have zero underlying value and trade purely on vibes, it’s no surprise Moo Deng Coin has shot up 1,400% since it was created less than three weeks ago. (It should be noted that crypto traders suspect this anonymous Moo Deng booster is an “insider,” since they bought the coin four hours after its creation, per the crypto news site Decrypt. I wanted to taste a descendant of those ancient peppers, Peru’s native ají amarillo. Now it was time to learn how this distillation of ají amarillo manifested in local dishes. I felt as if this might be the closest I’d yet come to really tasting ají amarillo, its frank optimism, its essence as a fruit. The ají amarillo sauce was frozen into a shimmery yellow dust that turned to leche de tigre on the plate. Then came the soup, made of ají amarillo gone long on the stove with fish stock and fermented corn.

AP —Thailand’s landmark marriage equality bill was officially written into law Tuesday, allowing same-sex couples to legally wed. The law was published in the Royal Gazette after endorsement by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and will come into effect in 120 days. This means LGBTQ+ couples will be able to register their marriage in January next year, making Thailand the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow same-sex marriage. Thailand has a reputation for acceptance and inclusivity but struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law. Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon said last week that the city officials will be ready to register same-sex marriages as soon as the law gets enacted.

The untroubled July arrival of the country’s first same-sex dating reality show, “The Boyfriend,” on streamer Netflix, may be another sign that normalization of queerness in Japan is on the way. “It’s no different from the familiar reality shows we’ve seen before. The only thing that felt odd or questionable was that, while there have been plenty of heterosexual reality shows, there have been so few featuring same-sex couples, and none in Japan,” casting director Taiki told Variety. The commentators included central host Megumi, an entertainer; drag queen Durian Lollobrigida; Tokui Yoshimi, a veteran of previous reality shows including “Terrace House”; Horan Chiaki; and style diva Thelma Aoyama. “As this was Japan’s first romance reality show featuring male same-sex relationships, it was crucial to have someone from that community in the studio,” Lollobrigida told Variety.

New York officials released Monday forensic sketches and informational flyers about a possible new victim in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, in an effort to identify them and get new leads in the roughly 20-year-old homicide. The remains of the victim, referred to as “Asian Doe,” were found in 2011 near the bodies of at least 10 others near Long Island, New York’s Gilgo Beach. Long Island architect Rex Heuermann, 61, was arrested last year in connection with the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Heuermann was initially charged with killing three women — Megan Waterman, Amber Costello and Melissa Barthelemy — and dumping their bodies near Gilgo Beach. Authorities previously disclosed that “Asian Doe” was wearing women’s clothing, but did not provide further details.
