CNN —Week 9 in the NFL saw plenty of drama as the 2024 season reached its halfway stage. Seven games in Week 9 were decided by seven-or-fewer points, meaning there have been 74 games won by that margin this season, the most such games through Week 9 in NFL history. Lions beat Packers in heavyweight clashSunday’s game at Lambeau Field between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers was billed as the game of the week with both having excellent starts to the season. Saquon Barkley athleticism leaves Eagles ‘speechless’Saquon Barkley is no stranger to producing highlight-worthy plays of special athleticism. ☆ As QBs in the 2023 NFL draft struggle, Bryce Young makes most of second chance

Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.

Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday. Diggs, 30, suffered the injury during the Texans’ 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8. Houston traded a second-round and fifth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for Diggs and a sixth-rounder in April. A fifth-round pick in 2015, Diggs had recorded at least 1,000 yards receiving every year since 2018. Houston is already without receiver Nico Collins, who was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury after Week 5.

The Indianapolis Colts are benching quarterback Anthony Richardson in favor of veteran Joe Flacco, sources told ESPN. Richardson, 22, was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Flacco, 39, has started two games for the Colts, who are 1-1 in those contests and 4-4 overall. In four appearances this season, Flacco has completed 65.7% of his passes for 716 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. Despite their struggles at the quarterback position, the Colts remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the AFC.

CNN —There was plenty for fans to get their teeth stuck into in Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season. They are the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL after overcoming their recent rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, on Sunday. All-in-all, after seven weeks of the NFL season, the AFC is heating up with multiple potential superpowers really kicking into gear. And things went from bad to worse on Sunday when starting quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending injury. On Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanksi confirmed that Watson had suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, ending the quarterback’s season.

It takes a lot of things to go right to lead an NFL division near the season’s midway point. Yet for half of the league’s first-place teams, things went wrong in Week 7. The Vikings’ loss also broke their undefeated start. With its win and San Francisco’s loss, Seattle jumped into first in the NFC West. And in a meeting of two first-place teams, San Francisco (3-4) lost 28-18 to Kansas City.

But what was most impressive about this game was the Packers’ defense. Love has to be better and the offense will have better days, but the Packers defense was lights out. The Lions are the best team in the NFC at the moment, maybe even the best team overall. But the Lions looked like the best team in the division heading into the season, and they looked like the best team in the division on Sunday. He is on a pace to rush for 1,864 yards — his best season by far.

CNN —Texas death row inmate Robert Roberson sat praying in a cell Thursday night, just feet from the execution chamber where he was set to die by lethal injection for the “shaken baby” death of his toddler. Just over 90 minutes before Roberson’s execution was set to begin, the House committee was able to secure a temporary restraining order against the state, pausing the execution. Roberson’s case is called into questionAdvocates for Roberson insist the diagnosis that his daughter died from shaken baby syndrome is inaccurate and has been discredited. Shaken baby syndrome is accepted as a valid diagnosis by the American Academy of Pediatrics and supported by child abuse pediatricians who spoke with CNN. Since 1992, courts in at least 17 states and the US Army have exonerated 32 people convicted in shaken baby syndrome cases, according to the National Registry of Exonerations.

This ability to get electricity from one part of the country to another is ever more important as America’s grid is lashed by increasingly extreme weather. Extreme weather isn’t the only reason the grid needs to expand. “We run a VHS grid for a Hulu economy.”America’s grid is actually three grids: the Eastern and Western interconnections, plus the independent Texas grid. The physical electrical lines connecting all of the systems are fragile and outdated, experts told CNN. Clements cautioned that even a bigger grid can’t solve all the challenges posed by climate change-fueled extreme weather.

While child abuse pediatricians remain firm on the validity of the diagnosis, Roberson’s attorneys say there is ample evidence that his daughter, Nikki Curtis, did not die of child abuse. Additionally, she had fallen off a bed, and was particularly vulnerable in her sickly condition, Roberson’s attorneys say. Roberson’s attorneys are not disputing that babies can and do die from being shaken. Separately, Roberson’s attorneys have petitioned the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and GOP Gov. A bipartisan group of more than 80 Texas legislators has supported Roberson’s case, and his request for clemency.
