To report this story, Reuters contacted more than 300 former Tesla employees who had worked at the company over the past nine years and were involved in developing its self-driving system. The company requires car owners to grant permission on the cars’ touchscreens before Tesla collects their vehicles’ data. Reuters found that Tesla employees shared clips that captured sensitive and embarrassing personal moments. Tesla’s own data labelers initially worked in the San Francisco Bay area, including the office in San Mateo. According to several ex-employees, some labelers shared screenshots, sometimes marked up using Adobe Photoshop, in private group chats on Mattermost, Tesla’s internal messaging system.
The trial involved Owen Diaz, a former elevator operator at the Fremont plant who said he was subjected to harassment including racial slurs and racist caricatures. Diaz won a $137 million verdict at a previous trial in 2021, but a federal judge lowered the jury's award to $15 million while agreeing that Tesla was liable. What stands out is the consistency of the claims alleging rampant harassment of Black workers at Tesla's plant in Fremont. Tesla is also fighting a spate of sexual harassment lawsuits by female workers at the Fremont plant and another factory near Los Angeles. In another pending case, a former production manager claims he was fired for raising concerns about safety issues at the Fremont plant and a factory in Nevada.

Elon Musk is mirroring his Tesla management style at Twitter. The CEO has told Tesla employees to "go super hardcore" and "ultra hardcore" in the past. Last week, the billionaire gave Twitter employees an ultimatum: commit to working "extremely hardcore" or resign. While the note spurred a mass exodus of Twitter staffers, it was a move that is all too familiar to Tesla employees. Musk's more utilitarian leadership style style represents a sharp departure from that of Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal.
