A major German union has criticized the working conditions at Tesla's giant Berlin plant. IG Metall said long hours mean workers have too little time for "leisure, family, and relaxation." At the conference, IG Metall, a German union representing workers at Tesla's Gigafactory has criticized the electric carmaker for poor working conditions, Reuters reported. Tesla did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside normal US working hours. Tesla struggled to hire at the Berlin-based factory because of low wages, IG Metall told Bloomberg in June.

Construction workers who helped build Tesla's gigafactory in Austin filed multiple workplace complaints on Tuesday. Workers accused their subcontractors of withholding wages and failing to keep workers safe, documents say. The construction workers accused their subcontractors — those who employed and paid the workers — of withholding wages from some workers, according to a complaint sent by an attorney at the Workers Defense Project, the nonprofit that's representing the construction workers. Even so, this isn't the first time that Tesla has faced complaints about its working conditions. The construction workers are seeking to recover their lost wages, according to the complaints.

But, smoke has filled Nevada towns, including Sparks, Nevada — the location of the Tesla gigafactory that employs thousands of workers. On Thursday and Friday, air quality in the area was rated between "unhealthy" to "very unhealthy." On Wednesday, public school officials closed several campuses in Reno and Sparks, Nevada over the hazardous air quality. But, Tesla workers at the Nevada gigafactory might not have a choice when it comes to remote work options.

As a massive wildfire chewed through tens of thousands of acres in California over the past week, smoke and ash billowed into nearby towns including Sparks — home to Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada. Overall air quality around the Tesla facility was ranked "unhealthy" to "very unhealthy" on Thursday and Friday with around 57 micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic meter of air, according to the U.S. Air Quality Index. When air quality is that poor, people of all ages are advised to seriously limit outdoor activities, and wear a mask outside to filter smoke and other pollutants. Nevada Gigafactory HVAC filters have been upgraded to a MERV 13 level or higher over the past year to capture wildfire particulates. California's Caldor Fire, for example, burned more than 220,000 acres in 2021, destroying homes, land and leading to hazardous air quality in surrounding areas including in Nevada.
