We've made Thanksgiving dinner for decades. AdvertisementMy husband and I love to cook, but after making a full Ina Garten Thanksgiving dinner last October, I knew I wouldn't have the stamina to cook another Thanksgiving meal just a few weeks later. We'd never considered ordering our holiday meal from a restaurant, but last year, we decided to try Cracker Barrel's "heat n' serve" family dinner . For $130, I ordered a turkey-breast dinner designed to serve four to six people (plus a few extras) to pick up the morning before Thanksgiving. Here's what Cracker Barrel Thanksgiving was like for me, my husband, and two teens.

Here are five phrases emotionally intelligent parents use when navigating difficult talks with their children. 'I have something important to talk to you about'Giving kids a warning before difficult conversations can help their nervous systems pre-regulate. If you can name your own emotions and demonstrate healthy coping skills, you can validate kids' feelings and work together to learn, practice, and use healthy coping strategies as a family. Using words like "let's" and "we" can help kids feel a sense of unity. Help kids know who else is in their support circle.

Gen Z voters who struggle with cursive could slow the vote count, Nevada's secretary of state said. He attributed higher numbers of problematic mail ballots to young voters without signatures. States in the US require a voter's signature on mail and absentee ballots, and several states require additional verifications, including comparing that signature to the voter's signature on file. As the state continues to process mail ballots this week, those figures — which are already higher than in 2020 and 2022 — are expected to increase. Hundreds of thousands of mail ballots, or about 1%, were rejected across the country during the 2022 midterm elections, NPR reported at the time.

That changed Friday, when tens of thousands of DACA recipients became able to sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act for the first time. Bortolleto said she plans to sign up government-funded health insurance as early as Friday. The limited options, she said, mean many DACA recipients can’t get quality health insurance, resulting in high uninsured rates. The lawsuit says that expanding coverage to DACA recipients will create additional “resource burdens” and harm to taxpayers. She and other DACA recipients have asked the court to allow them to join the Kansas case, siding with the defense.

On the campaign trail, both Trump and Kennedy have pitched a “Make America Healthy Again” movement. However, he wasn’t sure how Warp Speed would apply to childhood chronic diseases — or in what way Kennedy would be helpful. If the plan goes forward, Kennedy’s mandate would be an “all-of-government-project” and allow him to marshall resources from all of these agencies for childhood chronic disease. What’s still to be determined, Altman said, is how much — if any — authority the Warp Speed role would give Kennedy to command agencies such as the FDA or CDC. Trump transition co-chair Howard Lutnick also praised Kennedy in an interview with CNN Wednesday night, and questioned whether vaccines are actually safe.

Self-harm: Why it happens and how to treat it

Editor’s Note: This story contains details of self-harm that some readers may find upsetting or triggering. She had just recently learned about self-harm after asking a friend about her many bandages and long sleeves. In 2019 there were 363,000 emergency department visits for self-harm, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Self-harm can also be a form of self-punishment among those feeling guilt or shame and thus like they deserve physical pain. You should of course use common sense and not let someone have their self-harm toolkit in their bedroom, for example, Whitlock added.

20 Years of Impossible Choices in ‘Saw’
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( Annie Aguiar | Joyce Ho | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +9 min
It can be hard to remember two decades later that the original “Saw” was less interested in gore than morality. In “Saw,” Cary Elwes’s character verbalizes the tension and appeal of the franchise: “He doesn’t want us to cut through our chains. “I’m going to try something else you haven’t seen before.”The classic tropes within “Saw” — serial killers, haunted detectives, creepy puppets — are mashed together and inverted around the undeniable binary of its core choice. In “Cube” (1997), an offbeat Canadian science fiction horror film, prisoners in a mysterious jail travel through rooms rigged with traps. Wan never directed another “Saw” movie, while Whannell contributed to “Saw II” and wrote the screenplay for “Saw III.”In the decades since “Saw” was released, Wan has directed tentpole franchise entries like “Aquaman” (2018) and “Furious 7” (2015).
