On the campaign trail, both Trump and Kennedy have pitched a “Make America Healthy Again” movement. However, he wasn’t sure how Warp Speed would apply to childhood chronic diseases — or in what way Kennedy would be helpful. If the plan goes forward, Kennedy’s mandate would be an “all-of-government-project” and allow him to marshall resources from all of these agencies for childhood chronic disease. What’s still to be determined, Altman said, is how much — if any — authority the Warp Speed role would give Kennedy to command agencies such as the FDA or CDC. Trump transition co-chair Howard Lutnick also praised Kennedy in an interview with CNN Wednesday night, and questioned whether vaccines are actually safe.

As a former acting U.S. trade representative who also served on the National Security Council, I’ve engaged in international economic policymaking firsthand. Trump’s main economic idea is to indiscriminately impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners, but it is American importers, exporters and consumers who will pay the price. When Trump last levied tariffs, the EU, Canada, China and other trading partners imposed their own tariffs in retaliation. While President Joe Biden left most of Trump’s tariffs against China in place, he managed to negotiate agreements that led to the easing of many retaliatory measures. As president, Harris would lead an economy that helps everyone, not just those at the very top.

Trump's plans could mean tax hikes for lower earners; Harris' proposals would target higher earners. This is the fourth in a five-part series about the impacts either a Trump or a Harris presidency could have on US consumers. Trump has proposed extending his slew of tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — also known as the "Trump tax cut." But another part of Trump's tax policy — his plan to levy universal tariffs on all US imports — could end up undercutting this positive impact. Donald Trump proposed mass deportation to lower housing costs and boost job opportunities. The U.K.'s Labour Party is set to unveil its national budget for the first time in 14 years later on Wednesday. Investment bank analysts have highlighted several stocks that could win or lose ground if the rumored measures are unveiled or curtailed. The Wall Street bank's analysts added that "U.K. long-dated yields might decline with easing budget uncertainty and continued inflation relief". The chancellor is reported to want to remove the inheritance tax relief available to investors holding stocks listed in this market in the Wednesday budget. Such a move may entice existing investors to sell the stocks, if the tax policy change likely impacts them.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have laid out a broad array of ideas aimed at making life more affordable and strengthening the economy, which rank at the top of voters’ concerns. Both Trump and Harris have rolled out pricey provisions without specifying how they would cover the cost. Though his campaign hasn’t released details on the proposal, Trump has indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Around half of beneficiaries – mainly those with higher incomes – pay federal income tax on their Social Security payments. Harris’ plan would also accelerate the speed of Medicare’s drug price negotiations so that the costs of more medications come down faster.

CNN —The US and Western allies are moving forward with a $50 billion loan package to Ukraine backed by the profits of frozen Russian assets, which includes a US contribution of $20 billion, the White House announced Wednesday. “Ukraine will receive the assistance it needs now, without burdening our taxpayers,” said White House deputy national security advisor for international economics Daleep Singh. The US will disperse at least half of its $20 billion loan by this December, according to Singh. European lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan of up roughly $37.7 billion (35 billion euros) for Ukraine backed by the frozen Russian assets. Former President Donald Trump was invited but declined to participate in a CNN town hall. Christopher Grigat | Moment | Getty ImagesInvestors can generally reduce their tax losses in a portfolio by using exchange-traded funds over mutual funds, experts said. "You'll have tax efficiency that a standard mutual fund is not going to be able to achieve, hands down," he said. The same concept applies within a mutual fund: Mutual fund managers generate capital gains when they sell holdings within the fund. Large-cap and small-cap "core" stocks also "benefit considerably," with about 85% to 90% of their returns coming from capital gains, Armour said. However, there are instances in which passively managed funds can trade often, too, such as with so-called strategic beta funds, Armour said.

As part of his economic pitch to voters, Trump has floated a sweeping tax overhaul, including a slate of income tax breaks. They worry that the expanded tax credit would reduce incentives to find a job, hurting the economy. The child tax credit “is a costly transfer program for taxpayers with kids who do not need government handouts,” the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, has said. In 2022, after one year, Congress allowed the expanded child tax credit to expire. While it was in effect, the expanded child tax credit reduced child poverty in the U.S. by nearly half, studies have found. JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, has said he favors expanding the child tax credit as well, though he is vague on details.

Donald Trump overcharged Secret Service agents protecting him and his family for rooms at his hotel in Washington while he was president, a new report from House Democrats alleges. The report points specifically to Nov. 28, 2017, when the Secret Service paid $600 apiece for several rooms for agents guarding Trump’s son Eric and his wife, Lara. On the same night, records show, more than 80 rooms were rented out at the Trump hotel at less than $600 a night. The British Virgin Islands is the territory "most complicit" in helping multinational corporations underpay corporate income tax, followed by the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, according to the latest update to TJN's Corporate Tax Haven Index earlier this month. TJN estimates that the UK and its British tax havens cost other countries an estimated $84 billion in corporate taxes annually. New York CNN —The federal government’s bet on using artificial intelligence to fight financial crime appears to be paying off. The Treasury Department credited AI with helping officials prevent and recover more than $4 billion worth of fraud overall in fiscal 2024, a six-fold spike from the year before. US officials quietly started using AI to detect financial crime in late 2022, taking a page out of what many banks and credit card companies already do to stop bad guys. The Treasury’s use of AI to fight financial crime is just getting started. Officials are testing new data sources to better spot fraud and shady payments, and they are teaming up with state agencies to fight unemployment insurance fraud.

The tax extension deadline has arrived and there are options if you still can't pay your balance, tax experts say. About 19 million U.S. taxpayers filed for an extension by the April 15 tax deadline, which bumped the filing due date to Oct. 15. However, for federally declared disasters after April 15, filers were not granted more time to pay their tax bill. Penalties and interest on unpaid balances started accruing after the April 15 deadline. If you missed the tax deadline, the late payment penalty is 0.5% of your unpaid balance per month or partial month, capped at 25%.
