TSMC halted shipments to a client after its chips were found in Huawei products, per reports. Min-yen Chiang, a researcher, told BI it raises the questions about a "shadow network" of chip supply. TSMC, Huawei, and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comments. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has denied that the U.S. was investigating its dealings with Chinese tech company Huawei, following reports that its chips were found in the Shenzhen-based firm's products. Tech-focused publication The Information had reported last week that the Commerce Department was probing whether TSMC had been making AI or smartphone chips for Huawei, in violation of U.S. export rules. We are not aware of TSMC being the subject of any investigation at this time," the TSMC spokesperson added. TSMC, which is the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, said that it has not supplied chips to Huawei since mid-September 2020. Citing anonymous sources, the report claimed the discovery was made after tech research firm TechInsights took apart a Huawei product and found a TSMC chip as part of its multi-chip system.

Both have opined that the rally on Wall Street underscores a growing belief that former President Donald Trump will win on Nov. 5. However, I don't yet believe that Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue have intersected just yet. Indeed, if the stock market is anticipating a Trump victory, what might the bond market and gold market be telling us, assuming they expect the same outcome? Are those markets telling us a Trump victory would lead to higher inflation and bigger fiscal deficits? Those betting on a Trump win would be loath to say so if they follow the messages of multiple markets.

Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. In the week ahead, housing numbers are the main draw on the economic front.

Nvidia could be positioned for even more growth ahead, according to Bank of America. Analyst Vivek Arya reiterated his buy rating on the chip giant and raised his price target by $25 to $190. That would add to the monstrous rally it has already seen this year, with shares surging more than 176% in 2024. Not only that, Arya cited "underappreciated" enterprise partnerships with companies such as Accenture and ServiceNow as catalysts for more growth. The stock advanced around 1% in the premarket on Friday following Arya's price target change.

That bullish consensus makes this former CBOT pit trader take pause, and I believe now is the time to hedge some semiconductor exposure. I want to use put options in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) to mitigate downside risk. That came in the wake of better-than-expected results from contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor , which counts NVDA as one of its biggest customers. Lastly, I want to consider the technicals setup, as when emotion gets injected into the marketplace, technical typically take over. To be sure, a Bloomberg report earlier Tuesday that the U.S. government was considering a cap on AI chip exports to certain Persian Gulf nations may also have dampened industry sentiment. Investors are sensitive to any updates on AI chip demand, given the dramatic rise in the stocks of Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and others over the past two years. Bottom line Artificial intelligence is alive and well, according to TSMC, which has emerged as the most valuable window into AI demand other than Nvidia itself. With Big Tech earnings in the coming weeks, it's particularly nice to see the AI chip trade stabilize after the ASML debacle. Jim said Thursday that AMD, which has way underperformed Nvidia, Broadcom and the broader market, is "still a bargain."

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on Thursday reported a 54% hike in net profit, as global chipmakers continue to benefit from demand boosted by AI applications. The company's net income was 352.3 billion Taiwanese dollars ($10.1 billion) over the July-September quarter, surpassing an LSEG estimate of $300.2 billion Taiwanese dollars cited by Reuters. Capital expenditure edged higher to $6.4 billion in the third quarter, versus $6.36 billion across the three preceding months. TSMC's earnings beat comes the same week as Netherlands-based ASML , which supplies machines to the Taiwanese company, issued a lower-than-expected forecast of net sales, sending shares tumbling.

Analysts told BI it points to continued AI chip growth in the short to medium term. ASML sells large lithography machines — which print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers — to chip manufacturers, including TSMC, Samsung, and Intel. Its customers include Nvidia, the GPU designer spearheading the AI chip boom, along with AMD and Qualcomm. This makes TSMC a good bellwether for AI chip demand. While a slowdown at ASML might suggest some caution, the bigger picture still points to a continued surge in AI demand.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said some investors are missing market opportunities because they are too focused on what the Federal Reserve will do next when it comes to interest rates. "I'm not saying the stock market will never go down when the Fed's easing," he said. But Blackstone reported an impressive quarter, and the stock reached a new all-time high, up more than 6% by the close. He also referenced the turbulence this week in the semiconductor space — triggered by a bad quarter from Dutch chipmaker ASML on Tuesday — saying investors' Fed worries may have scared them out of expensive stocks. "Everyone who's obsessed with the Fed's next foray is basically investing with blinders on, and as a result, they're missing out on some of the greatest moves I've ever seen in my life," Cramer said.
