Bitcoin had been trading at around $70,000 on Saturday evening but plunged to below $62,000, according to data from the Bitstamp exchange. Bitcoin was down some 8% late on Saturday evening as U.S. officials confirmed the attack was taking place. The cryptocurrency market suffered heavy selling overnight Saturday amid an unprecedented Iranian drone and missile attack on Israel. In the Middle East, events overnight marked the first instance of a direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory. The deluge of drones and missiles on Israel was reportedly in response to a suspected Israeli strike that killed top Iranian officials in Syria.

Mass grave with 1,000 skeletons found in Germany

CNN —Archaeologists say they have discovered what may be the largest mass grave ever excavated in Europe at a site in southern Germany. The remains are thought to date from the 1632-1633 plague epidemic. This evidence led the team to conclude that the older group of remains probably dates from the 1632-1633 epidemic. “I personally expect the number to be at 2,000 or even above, making it the biggest mass grave in Europe,” he said. Next up is work to complete the excavation, as well as cleaning and analyzing bone material, Langbein told CNN.

Roughly two dozen schools have introduced "no-loan" policies, which means they are eliminating student loans altogether from their financial aid packages. "They are giving them out like candy now," said Menaka Hampole, an assistant professor of finance at Yale School of Management, of the growing number of no-loan policies. "Post-Covid more schools are rolling out no-loan policies mostly on the back of Princeton, which had the money in its endowment to do something," Hampole said. Even if a school has a no-loan policy, that also does not prevent a student or family from borrowing money to help cover their contribution. "No loan doesn't mean free," said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review's editor in chief and author of "The Best 389 Colleges."

But on a muggy morning last May, a building of another sort, far rarer now in the city, was pleasantly dark and cool inside. This particular two-story, four-bedroom house, following the traditional style, is shaded and discreet. The 7,000-square-foot home’s focal point is, instead, inside: a large rectangular courtyard bursting with palms and giant elephant ear plants and bordered by a colonnade shaggy with wisteria. If the building’s more modern neighbors — glass cubes with manicured lawns — seem somehow both sealed against the elements and vulnerable to them, this house feels solid and purpose-built. On warm days, the doors are left open and the rooms fill with the salty sea breeze.

Here's what my partner and I usually get for $350 in our high-cost-of-living California city. AdvertisementWe usually pick up variety packs of Poppi, which contain prebiotics for gut health and have fewer calories and added sugars than most sodas. There are few places to grab bagels around my home now, so the bagels at Costco are a decent replacement. Instead of using cream cheese, I put Laughing Cow spreadable cheese on my bagel, preferably the light option if Costco has it. It's a good substitute for unhealthier snacks, and a pack of 60 only costs us about $10 at Costco.

Now, venture investors are returning. Venture funding for crypto-related companies in the fourth quarter of 2023 totaled $1.9 billion, a 2.5% increase from the prior quarter, PitchBook said Thursday. It marks the first time that venture VC investments in crypto startups have risen since the March quarter of 2022. Problems for crypto ventures were compounded that year by major collapses of crypto companies like Do Kwon's controversial algorithmic stablecoin Terra and Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX. Le said that crypto venture funding has bottomed with a rise in crypto asset prices and public market valuations of crypto-related companies such as Coinbase , Marathon Digital , and MicroStrategy .

The stablecoin market cap is growing again, which is a good sign for crypto market liquidity, but it hasn't fully recovered and could face regulatory challenges this year, according to JPMorgan. Stablecoins expanded by $60 billion between their May 2022 peak and their October 2023 low of $122 billion. But as investors anticipated the Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., the market expanded by $9 billion between October 2023 and January 2024. This is generally a "positive sign" for crypto, according to JPMorgan analyst Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou. Despite bitcoin's stellar 157% gain in 2023 and nearly ideal setup for 2024, the crypto market has been struggling with low liquidity since last year.

Here's the state of play globally for crypto regulation and enforcement in 2023 — and a look at what to expect in 2024. "However, much of their work has involved providing guidance to the industry through enforcement actions," continued Levin. Crypto market participants nevertheless hope that the spate of legal challenges brought to crypto companies in 2023 will bring clarity in the form of new regulations. The U.S.'s dominant role in global finance and its focus on consumer protection plays a crucial role in its leading position in crypto regulation enforcement. The region has been increasingly warming to crypto assets, despite a broader anti-crypto push from China, which banned bitcoin trading and mining in 2021.

Do Kwon, the cryptocurrency entrepreneur, who created the failed Terra (UST) stablecoin, is taken to court in Podgorica, Montenegro, March 24, 2023. The decision will be made after Do Kwon completes serving his prison sentence for document forgery, the court said. A South Korean national, Kwon is the former CEO of South Korea-based Terraform Labs, the company behind the stablecoin TerraUSD that collapsed in May 2022, roiling cryptocurrency markets. Following Kwon's arrest, the U.S. District Court in Manhattan made public an eight-count indictment against him for securities fraud, wire fraud, commodities fraud and conspiracy. How Work From Home Has Reshaped What Americans Buy

Analysis shows consumers are buying goods as a substitution of sorts for the services they used to buy—like purchasing a bicycle instead of spending money on a spin class near work. Photo: Terra Fondriest/Bloomberg NewsAmericans are still spending more of their money on stuff than they did before the pandemic. Early in the pandemic, unable to spend on things such as traveling and dining out, and with their finances buoyed by government relief, people bought goods with abandon. This played a role in the supply-chain snarls, the hefty price increases that beset the economy, and in retailers’ scramble to secure as much inventory as possible. As the economy gradually reopened there was a reversal that left many stores burdened with more than they needed.

It’s that second feeling I thought about while visiting Shary Boyle’s “Outside the Palace of Me” at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), an exhibition that considers how we create our identities and present them to others — and in turn, how those performances feed back into who we are. To visit the show is to step into Boyle’s palace, or at least one wing of it. “Outside the Palace of Me” is a contemporary art fun house — only the fun isn’t as innocent and uncomplicated as it was in childhood. The exhibition originated at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, where Boyle was raised and still lives. In the 2000s, Boyle began to make ceramics inspired by the porcelain figurines that were popular among the elites of 18th-century Europe.

"The importance of the far side impact was to produce seismic waves that traversed the deep interior of the planet, including the core. Previously, we had not observed any seismic waves that had transited the core. Unlike Mars, Earth has no molten layer around its core. One of the two studies published on Wednesday indicates this layer is fully molten, with the other indicating that most of it is fully molten, with the top portion partially molten. Cloudline first received venture capital backing in 2019, and after years of research and development and prototyping, the company is preparing to launch commercial operations. “The ability of companies like Cloudline to expand is highly subject to the complexity of regulations experienced across the continent,” Chokossa adds. Soon, factories processing whale oil, meat and bones sprung up on the islands. After crude oil was discovered in 1859, the demand for whale oil decreased dramatically in the following decades. In 1990, French national Serge Viallele set up the first whale watching company in the archipelago, on Pico island. The number of whale watching boats is strictly limited by a license system, which issues a maximum number per island – or per zone for the smaller islands. For now, whale watching remains a major draw for visitors to the islands.
