CNN —Scottie Scheffler produced a remarkable final round to clinch gold in the men’s golf competition at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. Scheffler finished his final round level with Tommy Fleetwood, but a bogey on the 17th hole for the British golfer dropped him down to 17-under. Fleetwood then carded a par on the final hole, allowing Scheffler to clinch the victory and giving the Brit the silver. Heading into Sunday’s final round, Scheffler was on the peripheries of the contenders for the Olympic title but definitely not among the favorites. TV cameras showed the American being told he’d won gold, sharing an embrace with his caddie Ted Scott as their remarkable season continued.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway dumped nearly half of its gigantic Apple stake last quarter in a surprising move for the famously long-term-focused investor. Even after the selling Apple remains the largest stock stake by far for Berkshire. Buffett had trimmed the Apple stake by 13% in the first quarter and hinted at the Berkshire annual meeting in May that it was for tax reasons. Berkshire’s Apple holding was once so big that it took up half of its equity portfolio. Berkshire began buying the stock in 2016 under the influence of Buffett’s investing lieutenants Ted Weschler and Todd Combs.

☆ Antarctica heat wave sends temperatures 50 degrees above normal

This is the second significant heat wave Antarctica has endured in the last two years. That unprecedented heat wave was made worse by climate change, according to a 2023 study published in Geophysical Research Letters. Climate change contributed 3.6 degrees of warming to the heat wave and could worsen similar heat waves by 9 to 10.8 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, the study found. A New York bankruptcy judge on Friday approved a deal that would dismiss Rudy Giuliani’s attempt to secure bankruptcy protections, putting two former election workers he repeatedly defamed after the 2020 race closer to collecting on their $146 million verdict against him. Lane’s order gives Giuliani one business day after the ruling to pay the $100,000, at which point the case will be officially dismissed. Lane said in July he would dismiss the bankruptcy case, citing Giuliani's failure to turn over virtually any necessary information about his businesses, while submitting incomplete or incorrect information about his personal spending. A spokesman for Giuliani said at the time that Giuliani wanted the case done with because it was preventing him from appealing the Freeman verdict and subjecting him to "voluminous and overly broad discovery requests." The spokesman, Ted Goodman, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday night, nor did attorneys for Freeman and Moss.

New York CNN —Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low cost carrier known for charging bargain-hunting passengers for anything and everything, is introducing business class seating. Farther back in the plane Spirit will also allow passengers to pay more for seats in rows where the middle seat will not be sold. Spirit looked at merging, first with another ultra low cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, and then with JetBlue Airways. Last week Southwest Airlines, the nation’s older lower fare carrier, announced it would end its open seating policy it has used throughout its history and let passengers reserve seats for the first time. However, Southwest has not announced any plans to offer wider, business class seats.

Washington CNN —Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe provided new details about the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Tuesday, delivering forceful testimony at a Senate hearing about the agency’s failures earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania. But at the joint hearing of the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees, Rowe also highlighted the missteps of local law enforcement on July 13, when the former president was shot. In a recent poll from Ipsos, 71% of Americans surveyed said they had some sort of rewards, points, or cash-back card, and 80% of those with such a card said they valued their rewards. But maybe we love our credit-card rewards too much, to the point that it's making us act in less-than-ideal ways toward those we hold near and dear. But credit-card rewards are, indeed, making things uncomfortable. I recently booked a fight with a friend who remarked she'd gotten some $300 in travel credit from her rewards card.

CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination for president during a news conference in Washington on Tuesday. “Kamala Harris and her candidacy has excited and energized the House Democratic Caucus, the Democratic Party and the nation,” he said. One source told CNN that Schumer and Jeffries, both of New York, have spoken to Harris. Menendez had faced mounting pressure from within his own party to resign or face the threat of expulsion from the Senate. Receipt of Menendez’s resignation letter was announced Tuesday on the Senate floor in a brief exchange between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Presiding Officer Sen. Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont. “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Schumer said in a statement. Menendez stepped down as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last year, but had long rejected calls to resign his US Senate seat.
