A recent appeals court decision out of New York may be what pushes Democrats to win the House in 2024. The appeals court ordered the Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw the state's congressional map. The congressional map used in 2022 led four Republicans to flip previously Democratic-held seats. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed DelBene, attacking the judge who appointed the special master to draw up the current congressional map of New York. "The Appellate Division decision confirms that the New York State Constitution requires congressional district lines be drawn by an independent redistricting commission.

WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) - A surprise Supreme Court ruling on Thursday has handed Democrats a potential boost in the 2024 congressional race by calling into question the constitutionality of Republican-drawn electoral districts throughout the U.S. South. That could force Alabama to redraw its seven House districts so that two would contain Black majorities or near-majorities, up from one now. Analysts said that would give Democrats a greater chance of winning seats across the South, where voting often breaks down along racial lines. Democrats said the ruling would give them a greater chance at winning back the chamber in the November 2024 election. "This decision will affect redistricting cases across the country and help deliver a House of Representatives that better reflects the diversity of our nation," said Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democrats' House campaign arm.

Now, according to an internal U.N. estimate obtained by Reuters, 5 million additional people in Sudan will require emergency assistance, half of them children. Even before the latest crisis, U.N. humanitarian appeals for Africa faced a $17-billion funding gap this year, risking leaving millions without lifesaving assistance. Last year, it spent a third of its overseas aid budget housing refugees inside the UK, a British aid watchdog said in March. Sudan was hosting over 1 million refugees, mainly from South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Syria, before the outbreak of fighting last month. Aid workers have been killed, food aid looted, and WFP says it's running out of stocks.
"I would not have come back to South Sudan. Up to last month, more than 800,000 South Sudanese refugees lived in Sudan, refugees from decades of conflict. Since the fighting erupted in Khartoum, the UNHCR has registered more than 30,000 people crossing into South Sudan, more than 90% of them South Sudanese. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after two decades of north-south conflict. "People say there is no stability in South Sudan, so we decided to build houses in Sudan.

Judy Chu criticized Lance Gooden after he seemingly questioned her "loyalty" to the US on Fox News. "I think she has drug along the other Chinese American members to sign this letter. I very much doubt that he would be spreading these lies were I not of Chinese American descent." "Lance Gooden's slanderous accusation of disloyalty against Rep. Chu is dangerous, unconscionable and xenophobic," Jeffries said in a statement. Rep. Gooden accused Democrats of bringing up race after his criticism of Rep. Chu.
All of this is a direct result of the work Democrats have done in Congress and in the White House. While Democrats are moving America forward, Republicans are working to move our country and economy backward. Under President Biden's leadership, Democrats have grown our economy 3 times faster than when Republicans controlled Congress and the White House. This is what a pro-business, pro-worker, pro-economic growth party and economic plan look like. While Republicans look to the past, New Dems look to the future – and in about a week, Americans will decide between the two.
“Death of a Salesman” actor Wendell Pierce, “The Piano Lesson” director LaTanya Richardson Jackson and “Till” star John Douglas Thompson are among the honorees set for the inaugural Salute to Broadway presented by the African American Film Critics Association. The event is set for Oct. 17 at The Lambs Club in the heart of Midtown’s theater district. “It’s no secret that some of our greatest actors have come from the stage or have tested their chops on it,” said Gil Robertson, co-founder of AAFCA. Suzan-Lori Parks’ Pulitzer-winning “Topdog/Underdog” — which starred Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and was directed by Kenny Leon in its first Broadway revival — is slated for the Spotlight Award. The production, which began previews Sept. 19 and opens Oct. 13 at Ethel Barrymore Theatre, makes Richardson Jackson the first woman to direct a Wilson play on the Main Stem.
The expanded child tax credit helped slash child poverty by roughly half, and some Dems want to bring it back. "This was a historic achievement to reduce child poverty by a record amount driven by the expansion of the child tax credit." He added that given the expanded child tax credit has expired, "the challenge now is for the Congress to extend it." Some Democrats want to bring back the expanded child tax creditThe enhanced child tax credit provided up to $300 monthly checks per kid to parents for six months. Without measures like the expanded child tax credit, poverty likely increased in 2022.
